Can we confirm the tone of this message? Reading through comments some seem to be interpreting it as you shitting on Fly and others like me are interpreting it as the obvious move considering how close that squad was.

Realistically if the 23 we put out on PF day was healthy (by my count there were at least 5 guys who’d have missed if it were a HA match) we’re probably reigning premier right now and for that reason alone it seems abundantly clear we’d be rolling that 23 out for OR if possible.

If as you said we’re behind the ledger post AD it would continue a trend from post KB that was 50-50 win loss and would be clear that heads are rolling in the 23. To me it was all very obviously stated factual analysis so you’re tone is really key for this. The only people wanting us to promote youth to commence the season are either morons or want to see us fall down the ladder. Take Cornes he’s both a moron and someone that’s frothing at the thought of us sliding and what’s his primary narrative around our prospects?
This issue is that the bolded is a big if though. Despite all our resting we couldn’t put together something close to our best side all healthy at the pointy end and with most of our squad being a year older most aren’t expecting that to change.

A parrot repeats the same words over and over in a moronic way. Eventually the parrot can be right. The parrot can also be voted out of the house. And maybe fed to the cat.

I reckon Steenes mediocre vfl performances were what’s holding him back. If he performed strongly in the vfl he would’ve played plenty of football.

“Time to move into the future” - depends if u see 2026 as a rebuilding year or a last attempt at a flag with the current list.
They ONLY way I see us challenging this year is if Cameron, DeGoey, N Daicos, J Daicos, Elliott, Moore, Frampton, McStay and Maynard are able to stay healthy. DeGoey's ability to play at a high level most weeks (preparation and recovery have never been his strength) will be key.

If he's going to play forward he might have to get goal kicking practice from his old man

He's nowhere near as accurate as Peter was

If we were fit we roll Brisbane that night hell if Pendles was fit we probably do it so it’s a ****ing strong squad. I totally agree with doubts over the 23 that rolls out in OR potentially needing to look different to late September if we get there, but I want to see young kids take those spots not have them handed over. Good teams rarely commence a season with a bunch of untried youngsters unless the untried youngsters are it and a bit which ours are not.

Realistically if Pendles lasted more than a few minutes we would probably bring reigning premiers right now

Exactly my reaction - lost Pendles in the first 5 minutes, JDG stuffed after half time and we we're one reasonable free kick to Billy away from being within 6 points early in the last - that non-free kick changed the momentum of the game.

The loss of Pendles was significant, I simply don't see the Lions kicking those stoppage goals where they stepped through the defence if he's out there.

Reckon we're still the side the Lions would not want to play in a final
The word out of the Pies was that we were going to tag McLuggage but the injury put paid to that. 37 posessions later…..

Losing Pendles to me is definitely a Geelong question not Brisbane. The impact it had on Steele’s role and around stoppage was catastrophic to our chances. Would we have rolled the Cats who knows, but a useless Cameron with no Stewart would have helped… That’s not to take the gloss off Brisbane in any way they are and were supreme it just would have been nice to get them on even footing that day.

It's also about giving other players a run through the midfield, including some of our young players.
Someone could, and should, take the bit between the teeth and run with it.

Nick is an accurate set shot kick for goal. Some of his roving work stuff needs work, but Peter was in the top 5 I've seen for small forward stuff .
The marvel had it on a string in close.
Could Daicos torpedo from 60, and dance as well as Astair...

Nick Barley plays Forward so does not have lot of time to Kick Many Goals

Before the game I thought the key was Roan Steele shutting down McCluggage and from memory his running power was too much for Sidebottom (previous an ideal match up). Macrae needed to back Roan but end of the day Brisbane's dynamic hybrid mid/fwds killed us and the best side won. I think for us to go the next level the likes of Pendles, Sidebottom really need to compliment the side so we need the likes of an Allan, Anderson, Steele, Harrison, Prindable, Steene, Buller, West, McInness, Parker, Long, Cochran, Jiath. Bobby Hill coming back would be a huge plus.

He wasn't last year. I doubt it will be an issue again though.
Peter Daicos was an incredible goal scorer, he didn't kick more goals than any other small forward for nothing. At first they used to say he fluked goals and was lucky. Until he did it so many times for so long that they started to say he was uncanny, special and somehow inhuman. Like he had a goal-sense and skill level that was like some sort of super-power. They didn't call him the Macedonian Marvel for nothing, he could kick them from anywhere, under any amount of pressure and almost always did.

Correct.
Resting didn’t work.
It cost us a 3 game lead on top of the ladder.

It's because they don't actually rest them. They load them up late in the year to get them as fit as possible for finals, which is it's own risk.

Peter was amazingly skillful and the first to understand and good enough to take advantage of the fact that kicks that curl right to left in the air bounce left to right.

Peter was one of a kind.

He kicked 13 goals one game. 97 in a year as a small-medium forward.

Nick may end up the GOAT and the game has changed. But Peter was a freak.

That's true, SR. But the lack of momentum that resulted in changing the run on team each week did have a negative impact on our overall performance. It's something that I think the club will have learned a lot from and I don't expect them to repeat that mistake. There's something to be said about consistency and maintaining a winning formula/combination.

It’s still a rest as the loading happens regardless whether they play or not like in 2023.

We were 3 games clear before resting.
We slid once we started resting.
Those are facts.
The other point of view is a wild guess.
