Buller definitely has a vibe that he’s coming to grips with a very structured, regimented and refined system

Getting a lot of tips and instructions from different team mates

Heppell seems to have really taken to the role like a duck to water. Really geeing up the boys.

Fantastic to see Goldy again too

Any surprises in the afl group?

Nah not really

Seems to be winding down now. A group doing some forward line drills

Another group doing sprints/running drills

Would like some like Parker Allan R Steele etc to become regulars now and start giving opportunities to West Prindable etc

Very curious about Allan’s progress?
This should be his time to shine now.
Any inclination of improvement?

Not that I noticed really

Swadling stood out more to me

Yes we were. Also, Geelong have been falling off a cliff for 15 years. And yet they nearly always outperform expectations. Maybe we can do it again too.
Give any team a walk upstart to finals with a home ground win rate over 85%, providing 8-9 guaranteed wins, and they too would outperform.

Just back from training. Still a pretty medium intensity approach, with drills, drills and more drills. New coaches and the playing group all trying to get used to them still…

Bit of full length transition practice at the end, but still no real regular game match sim. Maybe they are easing into it, with injuries post the long break front of mind.

Prindable was not prevalent today, but did show his tackling nous in the full length stuff. Nice to see he has a defensive side to his game as well… whilst still getting on the end of some transition play.

Nick - was all set to write about his low intensity as he eases back into things post injuries. But then the full length stuff started, and he just went bang! So evasive and quick cutting through the defence and propelling the ball forward / kicking goals. Even launched a low torp at full pace, which hit a forward perfectly.

Buller - contested well, against Maynard all day. Second efforts good, kicking still a bit off though. Keeps instructing, so has a bit of presence about him.

Howes - such a nugget for 196cm. Is build like a midfielder or forward pocket. Like his kicking and aggression, so am hoping he continues to progress.

West - did well. Quick on a lead, and gets in good spots to mark in contested duels. And v hard to move with his tree truck legs. Often in the action, showcasing his ability to gain separation, or be in the right spots for midfielders looking to deliver fwd

Membrey. So strong. Looking fit and determined. Nice to see.

Allan - some nice passages and got involved a bit more. Even took bounces whilst running down the wing, which was encouraged in that drill, and nice to see. Needs to sit with Nick and get his tips for gaining metres via his run.

Lippa - in v good shape. Still think he might’ve lost a couple of pounds to gain some quickness, as is moving v well.

Sidey - also in ripping shape. Involved.

Elliott - quick, elusiveness, high level forward craft.

JDG - slotted a few goals, loves getting in the action and converting. Still competitive

Harrison - also involved and showing his nous in field play. Putting his name up there.

Overall the side looks v even past our top 15 or so players. & we Should have a strong VFL side as players like Ryan are well established now, Jiath bigger and comfortable with game plan, smalls bigger and well set, and fringe rucks and key players looking ready to take the next step. Just need more evidence of their abilities vs other AFL sides, as midfields like Geelong and Lions are a whole different proposition. As are the more dominant key position players, small forwards, and running defenders etc around the league.

Some promising comments.
Doesn’t seem to be panic stations as some goose scribes suggest…

Allan is a conundrum?
Physical attributes of a player.
What’s setting him back?
Urgency? Lack of confidence? Fear?
Or is it football nous?
My fingers were crossed, might need my toes 🤣.
He just doesn’t dominate or excel at any one thing. And isn’t always in the right spots - which midfielders need to be. Under utilises his attributes as always looks to dish off by hand rather than run and explode from congested situations. Not what you expect from a 6’ 4” mid who can run like the wind.

Likely in his head as desire and footy smarts are the intangibles that aren’t obvious to the naked eye. Reckon he has been challenged to have an impact, but he wouldn’t be the first mid to show promise but struggle to keep up with play at the elite level

I hope he has a bit more dare this season and takes it on.
I’d rather he bugger it up and be critiqued than revert to his shell.

Why do you rate Geelong’s midfield in the same class as BNE?

What’s holding Allen back? All of the above, especially the ‘footy nous’ bit. I’ve pretty much written him off.

Which, for me, is like the reverse kiss of death. Now he’ll have a great year.
