What’s holding Allen back? All of the above, especially the ‘footy nous’ bit. I’ve pretty much written him off.

Which, for me, is like the reverse kiss of death. Now he’ll have a great year.

So we had 2 1st Round Picks in we Stuffed them both up?

There's good news out of Olympic Park, with superstar Nick Daicos rejoining the main group on Friday morning after beginning the 2026 pre-season on a modified program.

It's a significant step for the midfielder, as the club had prioritised a cautious recovery from his September health setbacks, with Daicos looking in peak form ahead of his expected star role in the upcoming AFL Origin match.

Daicos was dominant in a short but intense match simulation, while also being a standout ball user in the main group's activities, looking the freshest of the Magpies afield.

He was crafty by hand in the middle and launched a dead-eye cross-field torpedo inside 50 to set up a set shot and goal for the team in white guernseys.

In rehab was key forward Daniel McStay, already returning to the track following his hamstring injury on Wednesday.

Similarly, captain Darcy Moore resumed light duties after missing Wednesday's session with a calf strain.

While McStay and Moore spent the entirety of the session away from the main Magpies collective, settled in the injured group of Isaac Quaynor (hamstring) and Beau McCreery (foot), the quartet completed skills and mobility duties, as well as some drills focusing on explosiveness, which did not present much discomfort to both key position players.

Jeremy Howe, who also suffered a calf complaint on Monday with Darcy Moore, was also seen on track as he begins his recovery from the strain, which has been reported as being graded on the "lower end".

Josh Daicos spent time away from the main group completing an individual running program, as did Reef McInnes for an extended period of time, with McInnes' running stints notably more intense as he ramps up his fitness ahead of pre-season.

Former Demon and Magpies VFL player Taj Woewodin, was a key inclusion to the main training session, with the 21-game Dee meeting the standards set by the AFL group and hardly looking a step behind the pace.

Collingwood will take on North Melbourne on Sunday, March 1 at Mars Stadium as part of the pre-season Community Series.

I notice possession is still nine tenths of the law.

West doesn’t present as a back up ruck. Neither does Membrey, but at least he is an experienced, hard nut who knows how to provide a contest.

Cameron and Buller will ruck. Both can mark when resting forward.

McStay will get first chance at CHF, provided he recovers reasonably soon. West or Membrey full forward, dependant on whose pre season form demands it.

So at the Moment we can say Buller is ahead of West at this Moment as a Forward and Suprised to see Houston in the 2nds Team

Where was McCarthy?
Saxena and McCarthy didn't participate. They ran laps.

Spoiled for reports today. Wow it is great to have City Slicker as a new reporter. Here is another 1 just put up on Fb by Anabelle
I think Jen will have another up later as she usually does

Today was a longish, relatively punishing session to usher in the weekend break.

Conditions? The sky was replete with fluffy white clouds surrounded by strips of deep blue trying to barge their way through. Heat alternated with cooler air with the wind dominating throughout. The strong breezes seemed to play havoc occasionally with the high marking.

Roll call: Hill was the conspicuous absentee, while Howe made a relatively brief appearance, undertaking some rehabilitation.

The infirmary: auguries of hope emerged from this area today as some of regular patients upped their loads. Reef spent some time there. The group started with fundamental skills practice in front of the pavilion before ramping proceedings up as they moved to the outer side of the ground. IQ, Moore and McStay spent the duration of their session as an in-patient here, while Beau did a lot of running, some high-powered and a couple of skill drills in addition to practising his kicking. IQ in heartening signs, no longer moved like one of the stereotypical Kane Cornes’ Collingwood ‘geriatrics. He ran laps at good speed and showed an endurance capability which reflected the strong fitness base established prior to Christmas. McStay ran hard and likewise showed that aerobically he is well equipped at this point. Moore spent a lot of time on the resistance tape with a trainer focusing on high knee lifts before graduating to some run throughs at half - to three quarter pace. Darcy and Beau received some loosening up massages from the physios, the former on his back, the latter on his hip. They completed a bracket of running with forward kicks. On balance this group looked like they were progressing very well and looking closer to integration back into training proper. Josh was a transient member of this group, completing a lot of the main fare but returning to do some sprinting and jogging.

Points of interest: the two academy players joined us again along with Josh Browne, Perryman’s younger brother and Taj Woewodin. The former looked pretty good at times. The players gathered in front of the pavilion prior to training and Swadling was pushed forward. The players sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to him in boisterous fashion which probably helps foster team spirit and created a convivial atmosphere before embarking on the lengthy exacting session.

Activities during the course of the session? Players warmed up much to the delight of the holiday attendees using the fence abutting the John Cain Arena end goals as they paired up using the resistance tape, completed short sprints with footballs above their heads and did some thigh strengthening work isolating the muscles here as they assumed strategic poses, creeping forward. The happy snappers were out in force and fathers could be heard reminding their sprogs what a bonus they had had with this up close and personal view of their sporting heroes.

There were quite a few drills dedicated to various areas with half clad in black tops and the rest vested to instil the competitive edge while honing ball skills and evasiveness which were key foci today. There were also a lot of staggered running phases today with one resembling a mini yoyo challenge. After the match simulation, those not working on areas earmarked for them, completed even more running as the arena heated up, under the guidance of the coaches. One of the more arduous running sets was when the players were rendered prostrate on the ground and had to rise at the sound of the whistle and spring forward at speed.

There were some whole ground movement drills and the final segment of the main menu which was match simulation. Another was a pseudo whole ground movement activity involving all black clad in one semi circle of the ground with the white clad in the other half who then cleaved into two performing competitive mini matchplay among themselves.

There was also specific marking practice for the taller players. They gathered in threesomes and had to tussle with each other and eventually allow one to move forward and mark. This seemed to be more about body positioning than actual marking skills.

Random observations of players:

Reef - the majority of his session was solo today under the guidance of a trainer and apart from the running, he performed agility skills and did some work on with the marking bag honing this aspect of his game and testing out his leaping prowess post ACL surgery. He ran particularly hard today and was really pushing himself. When running with teammates he tends to trail them because of their superior tanks but he is doing everything in his power to improve his endurance

Howes - post the main fare, a number of the taller, KP linked players competed in pairs in marking. He was paired with Membrey. He appeared to be a tad fatigued as it was towards the end of the session but he competed hard and sometimes emerged victorious. He received encouragement from the coaches. He seemed to be mainly the defender. This highlighted that he has determination and a competitive spirit. He managed to spoil well on occasions. Maybe he’s seen as an option in defence.

Membrey - in the aforementioned pairing and in general play today, like the previous sessions marked well and showed despite his probable ‘geriatic’ status he still has something to offer. His experience sometimes was obvious in the way he positioned his body during these duels.

Nick - reports of any injury are greatly exaggerated as he looked very good today despite, like others travelling in cognito a lot of the time. At one point when the match sim began track watchers were keen to ascertain who the fast smoothing mover powering through the middle was who had donned #31 in white. Therein followed whispers of disappointment to discover that it was only our incumbent champion. After the main program he undertook some running with Swadling and Houston.

Buller - Jack was often pitted against Maynard today and probably shaded him in terms of bragging rights. He was able to mark confidently at times in both the match simulation and extended duel following training proper. He used his body well, edging Brayden out at times but pleasingly his hands seemed clean when he attained pole position.

Maynard - while he had his work cut out battling with Buller who has the extra height to stretch him, he has been quietly efficient this summer and looks fighting fit. What the duel did reveal is that we can’t expect him to assume the role of a key position defender as by dint of his lack of relative height he starts behind the eight ball.

Cameron - how blessed are we that pre-season after pre-season he turns up looking in great shape and just taking up where he left off with his vice like marking and good follow-up work. He was a stand-out during match simulation today and was a bit stronger than Steene in his one-on-one protracted duel near the end of training

Schultz - is moving particularly well and sharked the ball off the pack in clinical fashion drilling the ball forward. Is covering quite a lot of territory at times and his skills appear to be sharp.

Steele - Roan covers the ground amazingly well and can be seen in defence one minute and up forward seemingly in an instant. This was evident during match simulation today and surely the coaches will see this elite endurance as an asset because his skills appear to be sound too.

Swadling - ran well in the sprints and semi yoyo phase and slithered his way through traffic a couple of times during matchplay. Is a great build for a contemporary mid and seems to know where the ball is. A good session for the birthday boy.

Hayes - showed some good pace and running power during match simulation and at one point baulked a player with consummate ease catching the eye of onlookers

JDG - the fittest he’s looked at this point during summer training. He is looking good fitness wise, while his skills are appreciably better than others he combines with.

Harrison - has tended to blend in a bit with attention on all the newbies but there were some encouraging signs today as he combined with teammates during matchplay.

Allan - maybe he’s a bit of a mystery man because today during match simulation he looked like any damaging elite midfielder running through the middle of the ground bouncing and capping this burst of energy off with skill by foot. Yet it’s almost as if he has an invisible weapon that can be unleashed either when he sees fit to showcase it or when an opportunity arises. While some have written him off, at prima facie value he has as much potential or even exposed upper level than most on the track. He also combined well in linking up with teammates running past as he was stationed in the middle of the ground. The scribes after he was drafted highlighted that his footy IQ was inferior to others which is ironic given his pedigree but he seems to thrive when given duties in the midfield where it is easier for him to become involved. Does the patter of marauding feet in the form of subsequent cohorts recruited below him, galvanize him into action?

Smit - am really pleased with how mobile he’s looking and the fact that his hands seemed to be more dependable now than at the corresponding time last summer. His confidence is clearly building.

West - looked impressive today, moved in a way which belied his height and again took some clean grabs. The replacements for Checkers are certainly queuing up.

As an aside Harry Van of the huge frame for a seventeen year old looking really promising again. The other AFL academy lad made an egregious error at one point.

Friday Training -

We wont talk about me getting sun (wind?) burn... It was very windy out there this morning. A bit overcast but it sure warmed up.

Absent:
Bobby

Rehab:

IQ
Beau
Moore
Mcstay
Howe

We had a couple VFL players join in to help out for a numbers pov with match sim.
Ed Perryman (#6)
Oskar Faulkhead (Might have worn #1. Got him confused with Lippa sometimes lol Similar builds)
Taj Woewodin (#23)
Josh Browne (#43 & 30 when wearing white)

Josh Browne was very impressive around stoppages with his pace. Hoping for an injury free season for him.

The rehab group did some light drills, some of them did some running before heading inside. IQ when he was done, got the cart back. Hopefully thats of convenience rather than anything more was wrong with him.

It was a real solid session. Went for close to 3hrs. Finished up at 12pm. There was a decent crowd with kids of kids around; a few of the players stuck around and took some photos with the spectators.

There was a number of drills this morning once they finished their warm up and fundamentals.

Fight work between opponents. I think The two academy kids had a ball going up against each other, trying to outbody each other out of the way to get the ball which was on the ground.

Then some of the keys went on to do some marking/body work.

They worked their way into some group drills starting with F50/stoppage, to have a player burst from the pack to kick a goal. Some succeeded. Some didnt.

There was lots of conditioning through the session. Right after the warm up. and then lot of shuttle runs - which Leppa and Roan led the packs for this.

Some transition work sort of match sim, where they were split up into line groups but the mids werent at CB. but more gathered at a stoppage and moved the ball along the wings and up the ground to F50

Finally there was 6 or 7 mins of match sim that was split into Blacks and Whites.

Some of the midfield match ups:

Long v Browne
Lippa/Crisp v Prindable
Anderson v Faulkhead
Crisp v Houston

In another cb match up:

Faulkhead/Swadling wings

Jordy forward
Nick HB and mid in rotation
Pendles purely in defence.

For some reason I thought Josh Browne left us and went elsewhere.
Glad he didn't.

I'm glad he didn't either. We missed him when he was injured in the back half of last year
