Question for track watchers, how is Steene training?

Do we think he has the ability to play the second ruck role and sit at FF ala Cox? Everything I see is that he has strong hands.

Or is he better suited to primary ruck? Reason I ask is because I think we’re still lacking that strong option down the line.

He’s not suited to primary ruck IMO
I think Annabelle is of this thought
Appears a FF ruck at the moment

Still gets pushed off the ball too easily
- new rules may help

He may evolve

Apparently rated highly internally

Dropped into my Fb feed a minute ago report from Anabelle

Players out about forty minutes before the advertised training time, meaning one should take what the website indicates with a slight pinch of salt
Conditions? Players trained under a pallid sky featuring some benign clouds with the temperature progressively rising making for a sultry feel

The missing? Howe and Hill - The latter has not endeared himself to those who sit on the bleachers with the malingering term being implied in their assessment of the status regarding him. Howe’s calf injury may not be quite so minor as reported given that he hasn’t been spotted doing much work outdoors since he incurred the strain last Monday.

Point of interest? - the AFL academy pair has finished training with us but Teakle joined us today reacquainting
himself with Olympic Park.

Rehab - four main patients today - Beau, Moore, IQ and McStay, though did a power of solo running during the back half of the session. IQ is another slight concern because he returned from the break evidently with the injury reported as a minor hamstring. Today he undertook some running, mainly jogging with McCreery, but Beau later on to complete a lot by himself, and pleasingly he cranked up the speed showcasing his high speeds as he sprinted along the outer side towards the River End goals. Moore did a lot of exercises, including some high octane agility work and quite a few twenty metre run throughs at virtual top speed which is a progression from Friday. IQ was seen receiving treatment for a trainer both on the outer and pavilion sides. Luckily he should have good residual fitness from the power of work he had already put in prior to his setback.

What did warm-up look like? Lots of work on the mini-hurdles, hopping and holding poses, and fast-paced agility routines, followed by three different lines running, kicking and handballing with a line of footies being placed at one end.

Activities undertaken? There were a lot of varied drills connected to handball, short and medium kicking, a bit of contested work and tackling. Players rotated through these stations quite quickly today. Greg Stafford again worked for a protracted period for rucking incumbents and aspirants - Cameron, Steene, Smit, Frampton and Teakle. Lots of running, the most interesting of which was a Yoyo ‘lite’ bracket of running which saw three distinct groups - nominally the elite runners in one, a middle group and one containing players from the most recent cohorts.

There was also some whole ground ball movement which preceded players splitting into white and black tops and then further cleaving with half of each hue taking an emerald green vest. Therein followed two semi-circles of pseudo match-play, followed by the main match simulation which today was the version which is the ‘skinny’ sim played between a narrow strip of territory from wing to wing. Cones form the boundary line. There were three teams - black, green and white which all played the other two teams, thus representing three games in total. This was quite willing as players often between encouraging one another, argued over line ball boundary calls with copious profanities audibly uttered. All participated excepting the rehabbers and McCarthy was managed through this segment.

Random observations of players:

Schultz - affectionately referred to as Shoota, he’s been one of the quiet achievers of the summer. Today he stood out in all the drills and match play, sharking the ball, becoming heavily involved in all aspects of the game, including tackling and kicking numerous goals. The only knock on him is that he is sometimes a bit wayward with his goalkicking. And there was one fumble which he redeemed by dint of determination. He’s a veritable ball of muscle

Houston - was great to see him fully involved in main training today demonstrating his laser like kicks and enjoying some time in the match simulation up the ground connecting with teammates both by hand and foot.

Nick - despite the schadenfreude displayed by opposition fans when The Hun played up his transient absence from training on Friday after ‘hobbling’ off, he was back in full force today streaming through the centre and unleashing killer skills which make him the sui generis on our list.

Long - shows extreme commitment in everything he does. He, with Lippa was at the head of the elite running group and this shows in the ubiquity of his play during match simulation as he runs tirelessly, linking up with his peers and continuing to follow the play. He can still polish his disposal as today there were some sloppy examples of ball movement by hand and foot from him but on balance the number of times he got the pill probably nullified these.

Saxena - will be interesting to see where his sobriquet lands as his style of play and movement lends itself to some typical nicknames. He showed during the taxing running phase that he possesses both endurance and speed which are handy attributes allied to his evasive powers which suggest that he will sell a lot of candy during his career. Was wearing Bobby Hill’s number 23 portentous of what might happen in the future. He combined well with his erstwhile Oakleigh teammate McCarthy on occasions.

West - did some excellent work in the forward line at the outer end during his first game in the ‘skinny’ match simulation both in the air and on the ground.

Steene - during the original match play he was able to take a high mark and one near ground level within a minute or two converting for goal twice suggesting that he may have a role as a forward and second ruck if he’s able to maintain forward momentum in the trial matches. In the tonsorial stakes, he was noteworthy for being shorn.

Cameron - his hands are as sticky as ever

Prindable - had an interesting day. He really laboured behind Saxy, McCarthy and Cochrane in the yoyo run for the youngsters. He got further behind with each set and looked a bit disconsolate at the end. Moore in rehab nearby noticed and went over and gave him a consolatory pat and had a brief chat with him. Nonetheless during matchplay he was linking up well with players, involved in chains and laying tackles At one point he moved with alacrity and executed a pass with precision. . Perhaps he will be another example of how the likes of Grundy can trail miles behind looking half dead but cover the territory during matches.

Allan - again showed some explosive pace and power out of the middle in the initial matchplay and he shows endurance during running phases but attracts criticism due to his laconic movements. He was named in the middle for the match simulation according to the teams projected on the scoreboard.

Pendles - wearing #6 at the moment and a cap and today was amusing to see how Hayes fell for his trademark baulk while manning the mark as the evergreen prepared to kick. Will is not the first and still won’t be the last to be deceived in this manner. Pendles made an egregious error during the skinny simulation much to his audible chagrin.

Smit - consistently -playing in defence a la Perryman, Maynard and Pendles, he appears to be getting more traction in terms of his game awareness and his hands appear more reliable than at the corresponding time last year. He even burst out of defence during the skinny simulation, charging forward.

Anderson - did some eye-catching things today, including slipping with ball in hand, on an obviously moist patch. He showed his body strength with a few of the tackles he laid or withstood.

HDM - was reasonably involved today playing forward of centre for the white team. Seemed to be a bit more deliberate with his disposal rather than firing off like a headless chook as soon he got possession of the ball.

Ryan - aren’t seeing anything at this juncture indicative of him being able to elevate himself above the pack. He made a few mistakes and his disposal is sometimes askew.

Hayes - showed good flashes of pace and a bit of skill at times and he moved around a lot looking to become involved in the play

JDG - the best he’s looked in quite a few summers. He’s demanding the ball, using it well and showing some of his speed and power. Today he predominantly worked in the forward zone.

Parker - playing for the green team he took a lot of the kick-outs and was industrious the way he worked around the ground. The players called for him a lot as if he’s become a trustworthy part of the set-up.

Training - Monday Jan 19th.

They started earlier, before 9, probably with the warm weather, and were pretty much done by 11:15. That's when I left anyway, after they finished match sim. They may have done extra running to end the session.

The session did start with some conditioning in groups. Lippa and Steele were leading their group. Schultz led his group and did better than I thought he was capable of.
Closer to me was some young kids. Prindable, Swadling, McCarthy and Cochran, Saxena. The later quartet did very well, Prindable did struggle at times, but you can see Saxena's running capacity, in endurance and in pace.
McCarthy is a good running for his size.

Rehab:

  • Moore
  • Beau
  • McStay
  • IQ
  • Howe

Most of these did some running, Howe I feel is a bit behind and probably worse than Moore's calf. He was just in the black training singlet. No running, just hanging around, some handball work with the group before heading indoors.

There was a bit of cross ground match sim at the very end, but that was split between three groups (Blacks, Whites, Green bibs) so was sort of hard to tell too much.

But in terms of players performances:

Cochran, I feel like he's really coming into his own. Now he has added more strength to his size, its giving him a bit more confidence in how he plays and gets involved.

Steene, did some nice things in match sim and the I50 drills. Clearly took my train of thought and got a harcut, it was all in his face on friday. He's now gone for the shaven look once again. I do like that look on him, makes him appear older.
Did lots of ruck craft with a few of the others and was put through his paces with the ruck coach.

With the ruck duties, it included, Oscar, Cameron, Buller (at times), Smit and Frampton. But mostly DC, Oscar, Smit.

We had teakle take part in today's session, so he can fill in for where they need him. Played some in defence, forward and the ruck.

West did some lively stuff up forward. his spring and agilty is becoming more noticeable this preseason as he is much fitter. Probably had about 4 shots on goal, gave anther away.

Saxena, probably the one I want to discuss more. Today he was everywhere. Has a real nice blend of skill, kicking skills are really good; endurance, pace and x factor.
Playing higher up the ground, so reckon we see him play HHF, wouldn't be surprised if he drifts up into the midfield in general play when the VFL games start. Reckon he's gonna be really fun to watch.

Probably the first time they included him in everything. Before now, they eased him out of the match sim type stuff. McCarthy as well. -- who was eased out of match him today, hopefully he gets integrated soon.

Buller did some good things. his confidence starting to rise in every session. You can tell he is starting to feel more and more comfortable in his role in this forward line. Has a nice athleticsm, a bit of mongrel in him as well. A real competitor at times when he needs to be.

Oh and Nick? There is no issue there. He completed full training with no reason to worry. Trained like he wasn't hampered by anything. Played though the mid, bit of half back I think too.

Hey friends,

I usually tap out from October to March every year cause otherwise it’s too much footy. What’s the 52 page TLDR so far? We winning the cup or what?
October to February is usually NFL season for me and my Pats are in the AFC Championship. Footy is back a month after Super Bowl LX

Likewise.
Underrated is NFL.
Strategic.
Cricket is overplayed, soccer is unwanted, basketball is overrated…..

I think Steele and Parker will cement their spot in the best 23 quite early. Most of this board agreed that Parker should've realistically played in the prelim instead of Howe. He's ready to go.

If we can get those two, plus one or two of Allan, Reef, West and Harrison locking a senior spot then happy days. Any contribution from Cochran, Jiath, Steene, Prindable, Anderson, Swadling or Smit in 2026 is a bonus.

Parker, Ed, Reef, HH, Ro Steele and Westy are the 6 that you really hope are fully fledged best 23 by the end of season.

Big wraps on Cochran.

Having Cochran come on would be more than handy. Here’s hoping.

Also enjoying the reports about the new ruck coach, Stafford. I don’t recall hearing that much about the ruck training and coaching in the past. Maybe he can make a difference too, with our young rucks in waiting.

Big wraps on Cochran.
Not so sure that he has been “shining” throughout the pre season. Bigger, yes. Slightly more involved, yes. Vocal, dominating and no longer a timid newbie, no.

Would suit a debut against a young third tall, but would bet monstered against the more experienced forwards around the league. Can run and spread, but needs to be more than a HBF for us. Would also like to see more evidence of reading the play quickly. Ala Murphy and Darcy. Will be able to judge more when the practice matches start.

I can see him playing wing. Hopefully ends up a Dan Curtin type

he prefers defence fwiw. Its his best position. Wing can be a really tough position and not suited to anyone
