In a normal workplace, the employee would exhaust all sick and personal leave and if still unable/unwilling to work, would then either move to unpaid leave (with agreement of employer), resign, or be fired. I don't think that's unreasonable in the AFL, too.
This is how it should be dealt with:

Yes, even that! Whatever works! We need him out there, more than ever!
I know from my school days that Irish ear flicks and dead legs are great motivators for people struggling.

Why, what's your take on it? Do, you find it an acceptable situation? It has gone on for well over a year, with no sign of resolution.

Bobby Hill is a highly paid professional sportsman. Accepting the big pay-cheque also means accepting certain obligations to the club and to teammates. From afar he doesn't seem remotely close to meeting those obligations.

Not playing is one thing. Not attending training with any regularity (and consequently losing further conditioning) is another. Training should be a safe space for Bobby and, as a pro athlete, he should be jumping out of his skin to train, because its the path back to doing what he does best.

If he no longer wants to (or can't) be a professional footballer then reach a settlement with the club and end the circus by retiring.
Many years ago, I would have said exactly what you have stated and disagreed strongly with anyone who saiid otherwise.

These days, having witnessed, experienced and/or been associated with so many previously strong people who have had relationship breakdowns, suicided, significant mental health issues or other personal challenges, I am much less judgmental

I now realise that people who don’t meet my previously high expectations and standards are not Softcocks - they are only human

I would love Bobby to get back to playing great footy for us but if he cannot (not will not) then it will not be the end of the world

I just wish that he would simply say in some forum that he wants to play for the club ASAP. No more, no less. Anyway, goodnight & good luck.

Will no doubt be a lot of interest in today's training reports :)

No Hill, again. How disappointing.

We've been decimated by injury and Bobby still can't find it within him to get down to the Club and train hard in a bid to win senior selection and help the Club that has been so good to him. Especially at a time such as this, where we so desperately need all hands on deck.

In what other workplace can an employee be on full pay and so blatantly not fulfilling the required duties? And everyone else has to tip-toe around the matter out of fear of causing offence?

Surely there comes a point where the Club says "either attend training fully and make yourself available for senior selection, or your contract will be voided on non-performance grounds"?
Cut and paste this and take it to the Geel board and post it in the Stengle thread.
There is only one person whose opinion matters on this issue and that’s Fly. And just like Scott with Stengle, Fly has a level of perspective and compassion that makes him a great coach.

Your post is just a trolling effort- that deserves no respect.

Although Fly wasn't at his usual 'St Francis of Assissi best' dealing with Ginnivan. Or perhaps he was and that's why Ginnivan is no longer with us.

There’s a huge difference between showing compassion to a player going through a tough time emotionally - and a flog who chooses to show no contrition for his stupidity, but instead adds fuel to the fire with additional action judged as reinforcing contempt for the Coach.

That you can’t actually see the difference is startling.

People would rather tip toe around the issue. A lot of what you have said is bang on the money.

It is assumption after assumption without any consideration of people reacting to different scenarios differently.
