I don't really know much about how the salary cap and contracts work, so this might be a really stupid idea... but... is there any reason Collingwood couldn't offer Cloke a really long contract (perhaps even longer than he is likely to play e.g. 7 years) to spread the $$$ over a longer period.

I know that might create some problems in the latter years where we'd be paying a player that is no longer worth that amount of money, but we're also in a hard to come by premiership window over the next couple of years, a window which cannot last forever.

He would also qualify as a veteran by then.

Issue is when players get long term contracts they often end up with injuries and never make the end, also if Cloke cant play on and they have to pay him out then the remainder of the contract i believe goes into 1 year of the salary cap, could be a disaster

As for all the talk of vets, last time I saw the rule you also had to be 30 years old, not just 10 years of playing or have they changed it?

Vets allowance rules have been changed. Only have to have 10 years at a club. No age criteria at all.

However, vets allowance is no longer 50% of salary. It hasn't been made perfectly clear what it will be but reported in papers to be around $100,000 per player per year. Unlimited numbers of players can be on the veterans allowance.

Didak, Swan, Tarrant & Johnson would all have a chunk of their salary not included in the cap for season 2013 should they all play on.

Having had a couple of days to think about it, I see this as more of an indication that Trav want's to stay at the Pies.

My rational is that his Dad will still be doing his footy contract, so he's hired a team to maximise his off field earnings, in an attempt to balance the pay sheet.

Deep in the back of my tiny little mind, I wouldn't bet against this being an Eddie initiated innovation, Trav knows what he's going to get offered by the club, and he knows that he'll be looked after off the ground.

This great point was made in the thread on the main board, by a Tiger too!

Reckon this is a sign he'd rather stay, wants a real manager to get the most he can from outside his playing salary because he knows that cap room at the Pies will be tight. Also, his ties to his family seem from the outside to be pretty strong, can't see him sacrificing that by moving interstate.

Great logic and makes me feel a little more comfortable about the possibility of keeping him.

edit: ah beaten. Smokey may have seen the same post.

If Travis Cloke goes; it would be to a Melbourne based team.

Only if a team like Melbourne or Essendon offer him absolutely ridiculous money.

And he knocked back Essendon before.

Basically Travis Cloke is just a big teddy bear that wants to be loved.:p
