Better talk to the Geelong staff.
CS said quite clearly and expressly last week that they had considered the issue in their planning for his return and decided that the trip was not an issue.
I don't see why you would play Paul Chapman in the 2nds now that he has proved that he is (a) fit and (b) in form.

Because "WE ARE GEELONG"!.......that's all I can think of!!:D

Hope Varcoe was watching Allan Christiansen, 1st game back!!!....22 disposals, 9 tackles,
6 clearances, 2 goals, and 2-3 goal assists....that's how it's done!

Off topic but was Menzel even good? If not why not just trade him? even if injured.

o_O

Did you see the kid play? If not, do yourself a favour and find youtube....

You will correct your post posthumously.

Because:

- he's 31 years old.
- he's missed 15 senior games through injury.
- if they don't take the proper caution and bring him back, and he gets injured, that's this season gone. He won't have time to come back.

The alternative is we play him in the VFL. This means he comes back for 2 home games at Geelong, and if we win those and against West Coast he won't have to travel.

how many games does he need to qualify for VFL GF?

how many games does he need to qualify for VFL GF?

Here are the Rules, omitting irrelevant parts

VFL Finals Qualifications
21.2 Players who have played with the AFL Senior team of any AFL Club after the 1st day of July in the relevant season shall be ineligible to play in the VFL Senior or VFL Reserve Grade Finals unless they have played a total of at least seven (7) Senior or Reserve VFL matches in the same season.

21.5 Notwithstanding the provisions of Rule 21 when a Club has both of its Senior Grade (AFL or VFL) teams engaged on the same day, (or consecutive days) the selection of players in the VFL Senior Grade team shall be unrestricted, provided a player has participated in at least one (AFL or VFL) Senior Grade or Reserve Grade match in that relevant season.

21.6 Notwithstanding the provisions of Rule 21 when an AFL Club is still qualified to participate in the AFL Finals Series, all such AFL Club listed players shall be eligible to be selected for a team participating in either the VFL Senior or VFL Reserve grade Finals Series game provided that such player has played at least 1 game in the VFL Senior Grade or missed through injury at least 8 consecutive Home and Away matches of either the AFL or VFL Season.

21.8 Notwithstanding the provisions of Rule 21, when an AFL Club is eliminated from the AFL Final Series on the same weekend as the VFL Grand Final, AFL listed players must qualify for selection under Regulation 21.2.

21.9 Notwithstanding the provisions of Rule 21, for a VFL Club(s) who do not field a VFL Reserve Grade team in the competition, AFL listed players must qualify players under Regulation 21.2 and must have played not more than 12 AFL games to be eligible to play in VFL finals matches.

Would be good if Varcoe could do what Bundy does but I doubt it. Bundy is a just a terrific contested ball winning magnet on the rise.
What would be good though is if we could see Bundy, Duncan & Caddy breaking away from the center square and then hand-balling to Varcoe on the breakaway and letting him do his work in the finals.

Just a quick question to all the anti Varcoe individuals in this thread.

After the opening 2 goals of the 2011 GF, and the gut running goal to seal the deal later on in the match, were you not hailing him a hero, stamping your feet, hailing him as a god, and calling him another ancient wonder of the world? Let's be honest for a second now shall we.

Then we shouldn't forget he missed a large portion of the next 2 seasons, (including the current one) returned in rd 1 2013 and played a fairly decent first few games, only to this time injure his shoulder.

Let's not forget that shoulder injuries take time on return for a player to gain full confidence in playing a physical brand of football and get back to playing at your best. Yes he hasn't been in the greatest form over the course of the last few weeks, but his pressure has been evident in his 21 tackles over the last 3 weeks. That tells me, he's not only willing to do the hard yards required, he's not far off featuring prominently in our push for september.

He may not be gaining huge amounts of the ball, but his assets in other areas still remain strong.

I am fairly sure that the only Geelong player I have ever bestowed the title of "god" to is one G. Ablett, Snr.

And even then, as an atheist, it didn't sit comfortably with me.

But I'm just trying to lighten the mood now.

You might just have to be satisfied with Motlop and Murdoch breaking lines unless Travis is selected and has a big turn around this week, ......they might give him one more go, but the VFL boys are in top form.
Selection will be interesting, we can't afford to drop this one!

we certainly cannot but I do have concerns playing Murdoch or Smedts, we watched them get physically intimidated in last years final as they are still both mentally and physically, 2, maybe 3 years away from standing up to bigger mature bodies and if we do see Varcoe go back to the VFL then I personally fear we are no longer in with a real chance of winning the flag this year, despite what you believe, Varcoe to me is the type of player who's adrenalin is at it's highest level when the team is on one of those 4 goals to 0 runs and his influence in those short 3-5 minute spurts is like a domino effect to his teammates.

Hard to explain in words but I'm sure you know what I'm getting at.
Like Rioli for Hawthorn, may not be consistent for the full game but a 5 minute burst he can produce is so damaging...not many players have that quality and Varcoe has it.

(you cannot teach it either)

Perfect.
And Wojo had it too.

Didn't I say Motlop and Murdoch???.....Jordie is a lot bigger and more mature physically than last year, the same could be said for Motlop, in fact I did post just that about him pre-season among his detractors.

Murdoch has been kicking bags of 3 and been in the bests for weeks, he deserves his chance, whereas your fictional bias toward Varcoe must seem by now as lame excuse making even to you.
Don't worry about Murdoch physically, he's 190cm and kilos heavier than last year, he dwarfs Varcoe and he's not afraid to put head over ball.

What a load of crap, 'not many players can be so damaging'?, yeah what!...once in a season or career, what do you mean kick a goal or two??...plenty have done that, that doesn't make them a superhero!!
Jordan Murdoch won a game this year kicking 3 goals in the last quarter!!!, now only a few have done that!;)

And VeeDubbs, you old stirrer, stop encouraging the lad.

There is nothing to choose between Murdoch's season in the firsts, and Varcoe's since his return, they have both been crap.
At present there is nothing to lose by playing either of them, it's a lose-lose scenario.
Varcoe probably gets the edge because he's played occasional good games in the past and might do it again, whereas this seems very unlikely with Murdoch.

But how long ago does one credit free games in the here and now???.....this is like suicide!......didn't Murdoch win us that game with 3 goals in that last quarter? His current form is brilliant!
If you think both are crap!...replace him (varcoe) with someone at least, we have others!!

Varcoe has had the luxury of continuity Murdoch didn't, just in for one or two, varcoe has had every opportunity, easier home games the lot, what's he going to do over the West? Nothing!
If it's a lose scenario as you say, you at least try something!

To be fair, Murdoch since his re-inclusion was much better, both defensively and near goal. His stats match up pretty well against Varcoe's this year, he's marginally behind in possessions but he's ahead in goals.

Varcoe hasn't produced a last quarter this season like Murdoch did against Hawthorn. He might be ahead slightly, but it's not a huge difference. Sounds like Murdoch is going everything right in the seconds too, unlike Varcoe in the firsts.
