We were shocking but in the players' defence, even though they had a dog of a day and they fought it out for a win.

We were a runner down for most of the match (that player was leading possessions when he went off) and Davis is a star. Went off in the 3rd with a dislocated finger, came back on at the end and won us the game.

Very impressed with;
*Reid
*Thomas
*Pendles (until last quarter when he dropped off entirely)
*Maxy for quarter 4, awful otherwise
*Steele
*Beams (this kid is a star)
*Lockyer ok
*Swan serviceable

Everyone else was terrible.

BJ is gone by the looks of it and Toovey is on mega-shaky ground after this game.

How the **** could you seriously be impressed with Maxwell?

My heckin'g goodness he would have to be the most overrated player to ever don the black and white. He was deplorable, was soundly beaten turned the ball over got in the way of Reid several times and didn't even get the spoil in.

Just like last week he played shit for 3 quarters then a had brilliant last quarter all of a sudden people were saying he was best on...

This goes beyond my personal view of him, seriously...

edit:@ Rusler - Maxwell did nothing inspirational today.

I wrote this post quickly at the time and yes, I agree he was horrible until the end. We would have lost the game if it wasn't for him in those last 10 to 15 minutes though. I thought some of the work he put in was terrific when the game came to the boil and although he put up a pissweak performance otherwise, I felt he redeemed himself somewhat when the game was on the line. I felt the same about Davis who had a poor game until he was injured but then he came on and won us the game.

Maxwell is not overrated; he is in fact underrated. Opposition supporters say he's a hack and some of his own supporters don't appreciate his good play. He had a bad game as did Swan. Is Swan overrated?? I never rated Maxwell until last year but he has won me over. The only thing that shits me though is his refusal to go one on one with a man when he has to sometimes. Brilliant set-up backman and defensive general but only decent at "defending".

*Thomas Brilliant, I'm loving this guy more and more. **** not getting the big disposles
Yeah, think he had about twelve.

Some people here have got to get their head out of the clouds and realize that players have bad days and good days and there is nothing to be gained from obsessing over each players performance in each game. Whether Maxwell is overrated or not he is our bloody captain and we have all seen with our own eyes him put his body on the line for the club. To come on here and bag out the boys after a win is bloody ridiculous, you have to be pretty good to play AFL and any team can win on their day, just be happy to be supporting a team that is winning and that you can be proud of.

Do people go around saying Swan was inspirational and brilliant when he plays poor? no they recognise when he has a bad game. With Maxwell he will do 1 or 2 good things in the last quarter but overall had a shocking game and people will say he was in the best handful on the ground, it's laughable.

He had a great year last year but new year and he is being found out a little by the opposition making him accountable.

Umpires definitely helped in the last 5 minutes.

Anthony's in danger of losing his spot in the side if Rusling or Dawes can put some good games together in the vfl.

Heath needs to learn accountable footy.

Jolly was recruited for hitouts but we haven't seen it yet.

Beams and Sidebottom are guns.

Agreed. But they were terrible for both sides for the first 3 quarters. Just very inconsistent and only paying some 50-50's. If it's 50-50...call "Play on."

The umps missed several frees for us in the first quarter in front of goal. Whether its the first or last 5 mins, doesn't matter. They were shit all round.

No they don't, the media and supporters (ours and opposition) start bashing him saying - "how can he ever be a top player if he plays one bad game in a year? B Grade at best."

Supporters overreact and make stupid knee jerk assessments like: "horribly overrated player and while he is important to us, will never be a star at the league level." You know....Kinda like you on Maxwell?? "Has to be the most overrated player ever to put on the black and white jumper!" Please. He is our captain, is an all australian and a bloody good player. Luke Hodge has been inconsistent for his whole career and plays many sub-par games but is still widely regarded as an elite player. I am by no means calling Maxwell elite and no way is he anywhere near Hodge as a player but one and a half bad performances does not mean we have to start calling our captain the most overrated player in the club's history. The best play bad games; maxwell is no different whether he is one of the best or not (he is not, he is very good player though).

Last week he was below his usual output and had a sensational 4th quarter.
This week he was diabolical for 3 quarters but was very important to our victory in the dying stages.

I didn't say he played well; as you can see I edited my original post. I also didn't say he was in the best handful on the ground. I simply said that I think his 4th quarter performance was critical to us getting overt he line and I was very impressed with it. One good quarter after 3 dreadful ones is a bad performance, but just as people (including me) can criticize him for the bad things he does on a football field; I feel I have the right to give him credit for a good quarter of football.

Thought the umpiring was about standard.

Some ordinary decisions both ways, problem is, a couple of those ordinary decisions happened at a crucial time of the game so it appeared the umps 'saved us'.

There were plenty of other decisions at the START of the game you could just as easily argue gave Melbourne the momentum in the first place.

I'm not saying I believe that, but the argument works both ways.
