Tyson has over the years played largely as a tall half-back, however with so much depth in this area, he has struggled to cement a spot. Maybe a chance up forward, as a third tall, will be the opportunity for Tyson to cement a spot – especially with injuries to Macaffer and Krakouer.

Giving Tyson a chance in the forward line may also help balance the forward line, because at the moment it is looking like Paine will be playing that role for Collingwood (round 1). Jackson does show ability, but it will be a big-ask for the young man in his first year.

HF: Didak – Cloke – Beams
F: Blair – Dawes – Goldsack?

Well I don't think Paine will play every single game in the AFL. Though Goldsack in that Postion is not a Terrible Idea but I think he be played as a Defender

For whatever reason, always been a fan of Goldy.

I always feel better when he's in the team, but the odd thing is that he doesn't really have a position! I guess that's what the utility tag is for.

Think he adds huge versatility to our team, can play back or forward, love his intensity and tackling pressure which is crucial to how we go.

Occasionally disposal let's him down I suppose but he's pretty reliable and has zone breaking potential with his running and torps.

He appears set for a breakout year and I for one, would love to see that.

Fair comment sr36, he hasn't done a lot forward so far.
I'm perhaps more thinking of his potential this year as possible third tall where I think he could go well.

Maybe I overrate him but tbh I'm pretty confident he'll have a big year this year and become an important player

I like Goldy but he is a shit forward.

Summed up!

He maybe of use as a defensive midfielder, handy enough half back, really shit forward though

With no Ben Johnson, and with Leon no longer off half back, Goldy is a certainty to play this week.

It will then be up to him to keep his spot, it's his to lose IMO.

And yes, he would be a waste up forward, unless he was primarily there to get our super duper forward press back in operation (last seen October 2010).

One kick in 2010 will always have Goldy associated as a 3rd forward. He never has been a forward. He always will be a half back flanker/gets 3rd tall and he will do it well. I too have always had a soft spot for Goldy but this forward business has got to stop. Does no one no favours.

I think he is the epitome of an 'old fashioned' winger. But with that position now becoming a second tier midfielder I think Goldy is best suited to defence

consistently shows he is a class above at that level. and collingwood's defense depth rather than form thats kept him out at a senior level. Unfortunately I can't see him finding a place in our best 22 as half back, though essential as depth. Hopefully he will get enough games this year to demonstrate something else.

this.

Defender who spends time in the middle as a tall marking target on the wing. Andrew Embley is his prototype.

Easily in our best 22...even if he doesnt have a defined position theres room for him on the bench.

But he does have a position - he just isn't the best in the club at it. That doesn't mean he doesn't have a position, and he is certainly not a utility. He is not a forward, nor is he a midfielder. He may be able to play some minutes up on a wing if he has the right match-up, but he is not a wingman.

His position is as a medium defender. It is probably Maxwell that is really taking his position, to be honest.

And what evidence do you have to suggest he is set for a breakout year? It is okay if you think he will have a breakout year, but just the way you have written it suggests that you have seen things that suggest he will have one. What are they?

I think the thing he has found is self belief.

I also think he has lifted his intensity which was always pretty good anyway and that may be a factor at the selection table.

I'd say he has good height, good speed, good marking skills, passably good kicking skills, is a great tackler and a good footy brain.
Sure it's a tough team to break into, but I'm predicting a big year for him.
I think the main thing he's been lacking is the self belief and my gut feeling is that he's found that, hence my bullish optimism.

We all make our calls, like those who thought Blair was too small to ever make it in AFL footy, time will tell like always I guess :)

Maxwell is a good case in point, he found a way to contribute and be value after years of being considered fringe.

I'm a big Goldy fan - quick, aggressive, neat long kick.

Given where he has lined up in the preseason, almost exclusively on a wing, I believe this was/is an attempt to get his possession rate up. His kicking is a real weapon as he is possibly one of, if not the, longest and most penetrating kicks in our team. He is perfect for getting the ball over the top of opposition "zones" and quickly into the big boys, Dawes and Cloke, where they can compete one-on-one.

I like the idea of giving him a crack on a wing and using this attribute. If the sh!t hits the fan in the back line, he can always be moved back there to provide cover during a game...

Lastly, Goldy is as hard at the ball and man as anyone which "The Great Man" would love...

Remember his games against Micky O in his first couple of years?

That's where ne needs to be for mine, in the back-half minding a mid/tall forward whilst trying to help clear the ball out when he can.

A big reason Goldsack has struggled the last few years and hasn't had a solid spot in the team is because he's been injured/sick. 2009 he was injured a fair bit, 2010 & 2011 preseasons were both wiped out with glandular fever and didn't really feature in either year until the 2nd half of the season.

This year he got through most of the preseason and then hurt his knee, but he's up and about again. I wouldn't be surprised if he played most of the season barring injuries. If you actually look at his games played, when he's fit he is stringing games together in the seniors, he's not being dropped very often. He's more than depth for the side, perhaps a fringe player, but better than depth.

Goldsack would improve very much if someone actually left him in the team.

I'd prefer him over Maxwell and I see them as very similar players. Although Maxwell is reputed to be a fantastic captain though obviously so it's difficult!

Goldy is as handy as they come u can't fault his efforts he goes in hard he might not look like a Rolls Royce but happy for him to fight in the clinches..they will be playing him in a few positions I reckon ..bucks will give him a job he won't waste his talents & leave him in the VFL:thumbsu:

Goldsack has been able to get a decent pre-season this year, which he hasn't been able to do for a while, although he did suffer a knee injury a couple of weeks ago.

I think his composure, particularly his fumbling off the deck when it gets a bit hot has been where he has been lacking in recent years.

I like him as a defensive winger.
