Have watched a few past Crow games on Fox Footy lately (in my rest periods of course) & it's remarkable how much you notice a player after he's left the club.

Not only was Tyson a bloody good stopper but he also found the ball in the packs & gave it out to the runners.

Plus he was very good at the quick kick out of the centre into our forward 50.

I think we will miss him more than we missed Kane Johnson in 03 & West Coast have picked up a very good team player who has no fear for himself & just attacks the ball or the man with the ball.

Have been saying it all along.

I watched 2002 final against Melbourne over the weekend and Stinger's work at stoppages was SENSATIONAL. I lost the count of the number of times he threw himself at the ball and dished a handball out to Kane Johnson.

I think we will miss him a lot more than some people are willing to admit :(

It's a fair point noddy.

I was definitely that way with Kane Johnson. I always accepted him as a good player but crikey, he looked twice as good once he'd gone. :)

The other thing I noticed about Kane AFTER he had left was that he never wasted a disposal, unlike most of our remaining mid-field.

It will no doubt be the same with Stinga.

Could it just be that we actually under-rate most of our good players? The ones that actually carry the side week after week?

Spot on macca, the ones that do the grunt work & rarely turn the ball over we do seem to take for granted.

Just my opinion but K Johnson > Stenglein. Sugar had class.....something you probably couldnt say about Stinger. Hopefully in 1-2 years we will say Thompson > Stenglein

That said I recognise teams need taggers - I just would have thought logic would dictate its 'easier' to create taggers than class players. What do you need to be a good tagger - excellent defensive skills, good concentration, abit of mongrel helps and good aerobic capacity. With todays game and the increasing targeting of elite athletes, as mentioned above I think its easier to develop a tagger than 'create' a classy player

UMHO Stinger wasnt in the top bracket of taggers (or defensive midfielders)going around in the league. Many times I remember the classy midfielders like Cousins, Buckley etc carving him up gaining possessions at will. Where Stinger brought real value was his non-tagging attributes - 3rd player up at stoppages (who is going to do this now?), his oversized midfield height allowed him to create contests in the air, his strong body in packs and his attacking attributes of clearing the ball out of packs

So I am saying he was more than just a tagger (which is good as he wasnt a great tagger IMO)

I am rapt with the potential of Thompson and Gibson (which we gained in return for Stinger).

I agree whole-heartedly Noddy.

Tyson was an underrated player who rarely got the credit he deserved. Though his defensive side was solid, his work inside packs should not be underestimated.

However, I managed to see a replay of Melbourne vs Sydney at Telstra Stadium. Thompson was on fire that night, and it was a pleasure to see him run hard, lay the tackles, and kick the goals.

While we will be affected greatly by Tyson's depature, we have an arrival who should eventually become an even better player. :)

I am sure we will miss him, but let's not forget we got a LOT back for him.

If Thompson & (?) don't add up to more I'll be disappointed.

Thompson & Gibson. While I think we'll miss Stinger, I agree that we came out in front on this deal.

Simon now has to step up..Do you guys still have faith in him...

He seemed very good a couple of years ago...

The good thing was he was kicking goals...

Spot on, lads.

I was never quite convinced he was that good, but if you extract a senior player out of any side you're going to feel it - look at how much Bickley's retirement hurt, and we supposedly had plenty of guys who could step in to replace him.

As you both say, Thommo and the pick, Gibson, should leave us coming out well ahead when we look back in a few seasons' time.

Alas it seems my views on Stinger are largely unsupported - Oh well :o

My comment is :
1. How effective was his dipsosal, not how many (aka Bode, burton...)
2. How many match winning games did he play? - sadly none I can think off.
3. Was he skillful - sadly ave pace, slow disposal, great mark, good decision making.
4. Was he agressive - sure was hard at the ball and man as I like it

Yes TJ but need to remember as a tagger Stingers opponent was trying to lose him at the centre bounce - what better way to keep his opponent in play than direct taps to Stinger.

Not good play by Stinger, but good strategy by AFC and implementation by Clarke

Stinger was at first a tagger & he done that task pretty well had his downers especially against Buckley but i doubt if Buckley was ever tagged out of the game by anyone.

In Stingers last few years at the club he was given a more free reign & told to get the ball himself & became more of a run-with player, granted his delivery at times was Connellesk but he more than made up for it with his all round team play & courage.

Not saying he was a better skillful player than Sugar or that Thompson will eventually become one of our top bracket but we will miss Stenglein in more ways than one.

Good at getting the ball and as Noddy stated, those quick kicks out of the cetnre created opportunities, however not the tagger like Carr was unfortunately. Hate saying that, but IMO Carr was better than Stinger.

Having said that we will miss him more than we realise.

Without question. I hated Carr when he played for port. I'm gonna love watch him playing for Freo.

First showdown this year. It was on Fox Footy last night. Stenglein was our best player and his clearance work was awesome. We may have still won the game without him but he went a huge way towards us winning that game.

Might sound a bit strange but i'm looking forward to the Freo/Paps game in round 1.

Not any way near as our own round 1 game but there should be a few bodies flying about the place if the Freos board on BF is any guide to go on. :D

And, IMHO, v the Kangaroos a couple of seasons back. We won by 15 points and D King hardly touched the ball. D King is worth 3 goals.
