So these kids all played as bottom agers?
Do Victoria select bottom age players for 16s?

It probably has more to do with a lack of depth of talent for teams outside of Vic.

In our Lions academy, say our U18’s, the top 4 or 5 U17’s would be better than most of the top age kids in the team, barring say the top 6 U18’s. And the top 2 or 3 U16’s are probably better than every top age Kid and U17 kid, except for those top kids in the age groups above.

So it’s usual to see the best bottom age and double bottom age kids in our U18’s.

So to seeing bottom age kids at U16 or U15 level.

Not quite.

Annable in 2023 was the only double bottom ager in the Lions team (think Levi Ashcroft in the Sandy team in 2022)
A kid called Jaydon Macaulay in 2022 was the only double bottom ager in the Lions team.

Last year, there were no 16 year olds in the Lions u18s, though Matt Owens might have trained with them a bit.

The Suns had Archie Hill play in their u18s in 2024 as a 16 year old, and the year before Uwland, Murray and Addinsall all got games as 16 year olds.

It doesn't happen that often though, not even Jaspa Fletcher was picked at a 16 year old for example.

The Lions in 2024 only had a handful of 17 year olds (bottom agers) in the team - Ben Lillico, Harrison Bridge, Raph Geesu and of course Annable.

The previous year there were alot more ( Gilder, Gillet, Fry, Fazldeen, Pope, Milner, Macaulay, Greenaway)

By my estimations, probably only Murray and Owens would be worthy of selection in 2025 from the bottom aged crew. Though Hodge might get a gig for the surname and McPherson might be an outside chance - its a pretty strong crop the 2007 year for the Lions.

Kids like Barry, Harrison, Slater, Ronchi, Waller, Tanks etc.

Nucleus of the u15 School side that nearly won the title in 2022 (even though Geesu, Lillico and Slater weren't even picked in that side!)

In the end, only really matters what you do as an 18 year old as Gallop showed.

The Suns appear to have found the recipe to make it work. You can't just throw any random 15/16 year old into the top level U18s competition and expect them to hold their own. There's a lot that goes into it and if you end up with a top 10 pick at the end (e.g. Uwland and Addinsall) then you've done a lot right over many years of development.

Think you will find the Suns will only be able to take Uwland and one other in this years draft, and don't be surprised if the other is not Addinsall.

However, not unreasonable to think that Uwland, Addinsall, Murray, Patterson all get drafted - plus a few others in the mix, even White if the ridiculous hype continues.

I can't see any of those Top 4 names getting past the ND though. Suns will have to match a 1st round bid on Uwland, and I reckon a first round bid will come for Patterson as well. suns then jsut have to pick between Patterson and Addinsall

Suns have 3 first round picks, plus their second round pick.

Believe they’ll manage to get all four players.

I'm with briztoon. I'm fairly confident that we've prepared ourselves well for these upcoming bids and now being able to trade two years into the future also opens more doors to load up on even more points, should we need them. IMO if we don't end up getting any of them then it'll be because we don't want them OR they've chosen to pursue priority access with another club e.g. Kalani White F/S to the Dees.

yeah, I'm not fully across how they have loaded up sorry, I just thought the new system would make it much harder.

With Uwland, Patterson and Addinsall - you have 3 guys that will get bids in the Top 30 probably

All good.

They hold their own first round pick, plus Collingwood’s & Port’s. And their own second round pick.

That’s some elite death riding GC have going this year.

Yeah so, they can't just trade those FR's for bulk later picks like in the past
You can still trade picks for multiple later picks for a points upgrade. It’s just more expensive on the buyers behalf in terms of the picks given up, and the seller won’t receive as big a points upgrade as was seen in the past.

Oh yep, they didn't bring in that you have to have a pick in the round a player is bid on yet

Assuming in the coming weeks, clubs will start to confirm their final squads?

Apparantely Ted Fraser is now 196cm (according to his mum who said he's 6"5), at 15yrs...
intra club practice match on Feb 22, I’d assume first cut is after that.

Ted would be 194-195 I’d assume, he still needs more time. There are a couple of kids as tall/taller who cover the ground a bit better and more skilled.
Who knows how good he will be in 5 years time 👍

Yeah, tall and skinny. Probably will take some time as his body matures.

Absolutely. The 3 tallest kids at Oakleigh are all very young (1 bottom age, 1 Oct, 1 Nov) and still have huge amounts of development ahead of them. It’s hard to compare them at this age to a fully developed midfielder (like Condello, for example)

Zane U from Western Australia who plays for East Perth is one to look out for. He isn't the tallest but he is powerful and has thumping precise kick on him. I watch a PSA game and I watched him kick 7 goals coming off wing after hurting himself halfway through the fourth quarter.

Sounds about right change the rules for GC
I assume the main reason for that rule change was to bring the academy and F/S rules in line with one another. For example, Brisbane wouldn't have been able to match two top 12 bids on F/S prospects (Ashcroft & Fletcher) in 2022 had the F/S rule been the same as the academy rules at the time. The same could have been said about Carlton's Camporeale twins had they maintained their first round status last year. The same goes for the NGA rules changing to once again allow the matching of first and second round bids, as we saw when Essendon matched a first round bid for Kako last year.

There's no restriction on the amount first or second round bids a club can match, regardless of whether it's father-son, NGA or northern academy. The emphasis is now on the greater number of points required to match a bid. It's going to be very difficult for any club to match multiple first round bids from now onwards and unless the club prepares multiple years in advance like the Suns have been or they dip into their future stocks (which will hurt them later), they're not going to be able to pull it off. Future pick trading will become crucial for some teams and that's probably why the AFL has allowed clubs to go two years into the future for pick trading from 2025 onwards.

We've already seen two first round F/S prospects come through in the same year (Brisbane, 2022) and we saw it happen with the northern academies in 2023. It's only a matter of time before we see a club have two first round NGA prospects come through in the same year. It's not common, but it will happen every now and again and the club will have to pay up big to keep those first round prospects.

Also, Tasmania could make life very difficult for multiple clubs in this 2027 draft class because they should have many first round picks that they can use to force the hand of opposition clubs by bidding on their players. Should be an interesting watch.
