French sports daily L’Equipe has published what it claims is a list that ranks all 198 riders in last year’s Tour de France according to the degree to which they are suspected of doping. The full list is published at the end of this article. Subsequent condemnation of the leak by world cycling’s governing body, the UCI, would appear to confirm that the list is a genuine one.

Only two riders achieve the maximum 10/10 index. They are Quickstep’s Carlos Barredo, whose most notable involvement in last year’s race was a post stage punch-up with Caisse d’Epargne’s Rui Costa, and RadioShack’s Yaroslav Popvych, long-time lieutenant of Lance Armstrong.

Dennis Menchov, who finished third overall, has an index of 9/10, making him the most highly suspected rider among the sport’s big names. Runner-up Andy Schleck has an index of 3/10, as does last year’s Giro d’Italia winner Ivan Basso.

Some ... odd ... rankings in there.

McEwen's response

Please explain #UCI . begs the question, intentional, incompetence or corruption?? #suspicionlist

i'm all for catching cheats but draw the line at this sort of thing which could be based on 1 single wayward statistic. And who leaked it??

I had the feeling that Cancellara was on the juice (or mechanically assisted) during the spring classics. However, his performance in the mountains was far weaker than what he achieved in 2009. I took that as a sign that he was off the juice by the time the TDF rolled around.

Surprised that Andy Schleck was as low as 3/10 though. That didn't make a whole lot of sense.

Odd rankings IMO. In fact, the whole thing seems very odd. Its as if they just got names of people who have won races, guessed how surprising it was that they won the race, then gave them a rating. Wonder if Bart de Clerq will end up on the list after last night. I was surprised to see him win, so I reckon he will get around 7/10.

And seriously, how does Basso have a rating of 3/10 when he is a proven drug cheat?
