Analysis Umpires

curnow was the beneficiary of a few gifts yesterday. we've been on the end of some questionable umpiring but last night wasn't the night to complain about us being rogered.

still think that the afl umpiring intentionally builds a crescendo towards finals and grand final - the umpiring is one way the afl can delineate between the regular home and away games and finals with their 'finals are tough' atmosphere. my point being, they could choose to umpire all year the way they do at finals but don't. why? my guess is creating that crescendo for their centre piece, the grand final. i'm sure there's probably other clandestine reasons.

The free kick they paid against Weitering in the goal square in the last, was the worst decision this year against us, and that is saying something. Bulldogs supporters around me even said it. Of course i would have said the same thing if I where in their shoes.....

Not by a long way. Weitering had a handful of jumper. Sure, he was being held too, but worst decision against us all year? You must have a very short memory.

LOB not being paid the 50 was significantly worse, given how they had been paying them throughout the night.

The umpiring last night was of a low standard, as it has been all year, but there have been a lot of games that were a hell of a lot worse.

Im not sure if this is a joke or if im thinking of a different free.
The free against Jacob in the goal square in the last was probably the most obvious free kick going around, in all replays he has a fist full of Dogs jumper and its pulled tight. Not wrestling for position or grappling, a full fist of jumper.

Like so many things within the AFL i feel we would be in such a better situation if we used common sense and simplified many of the rules, remove as much grey as you can.

The AFL is a $Billion sport, yet its officials are part time, this is riculous.

Full time umpires, who analyse video together, do meetings together, practice together, debrief with each other and have an earpiece to a coach or team in the box giving them feedback would surely remove some inconsistencies within a game.

Ir is clear within games that the umpires all have a different interpretation of most rules and have a different level leniency to each other which is what makes the decisions so hard to stomach.

First game live for me this year. Umpires made some woeful calls to both sides.

A couple of Charlie’s goals came from really soft calls....which evened out some howlers in the dogs forward line.

If they just called the blatant stuff and not the 50/50’s it would be a much better standard of umpiring

They were both holding each other. How you would pick that the forward was at fault for the free, directly in front of goal, and at such a crucial time is diabolical. As I said, even the Doggies where calling it.

so not only does a supporter insist the umpire is wrong, he refuses to listen to his fellow supporters who say the umpire was right because opposition supporters suggested the umpire was wrong (although those near me said the opposite) do you see where I am going with this?

The umpiring has been the worst it's ever been this year and it's not specifically just us. They just have no feel for the game and it's the ones they don't pay then the one's they do. It's a circus and the ring leader of these incompetent morons should be removed immediately. There I said it!

I didn't think we got a real bad run yesterday. I didn't understand the hostility from the crowd at the end

The one that pissed me off was when daisy came in late and gave away a free

Then bont comes over and knocks daisy down, no free kick, fine

Then daisy gets up and knocks bont down, 50m

How can the same umpire penalize one action and not other when they are identical, both right in front of him and 5 seconds apart? Did the rule change in those 5 seconds?

Defnitely wondered about this one myself. Thought for sure that Bont's action should have seen the free reversed. Was gobsmacked when Daisy's exact same action resulted in a 50.

Actually, that's another pet hate. Why are they warning them at all? Pay the free kick, or the 50 (when they won't come back on the mark, or let another player up, or give the ball back etc). There's your warning, to all the other players that it won't be tolerated.

If the umpire reverses the free for what Bont did, guaranteed Daisy doesn't push Bont over. And guaranteed no-one comes in late like that for the rest of the night.

The biggest load of crap about such decisions is how many they never call when the forward has hold of the defender.

It's embarrassing how many shots on goal are given to the forward when both have hold of each other.

Like other here I think it is folly to expect part time officials to umpire a professional competition. Make them professional and pay them well. There needs to be fewer rule changes so that there is an opportunity to create more certainty in players and supporters understanding of the rules.
I’ve gone bananas at a game and then watched a replay and thought better of my initial response because the umpire was technically correct but missed the spirit of the contest.
Constant tinkering, sometimes mid season, just creates frustration.
I feel for the umpires with the current arrangement as it is all but impossible to get get right.
I volunteer umpire my kids under 9s and even there parents and kids get annoyed at interpretation of rules. We get email updates on interpretation of rules.
Umpiring is a thankless task.

Make the umpires full time, remove an umpire from the field. This would improve the quality of umpiring IMO.
Yeah my thoughts are that since they've introduced more umpires to the field it's gotten worse.
Possibly due to leading to confusion for the umps...more minds out there leading to more misinterpretation and umpires 'passing the buck'...
Apologies if what I'm saying isn't making sense.

yeah I think that's right, more umps also means the lesser umpires are out there, it means more frees are going to get paid as well as possible different interpretations from different individuals.

Footy is best when the umpiring is consistent and only the obvious stuff is paid. Players usually push the boundaries and get a feel for what they can and can't do, if this doesn't feel consistent then players are going to get frustrated and so are the fans etc.

If anyone can put forward a case on how to make umpires full time which is realistic, workable and would actually make umpiring better, then I am all ears.

OK. So reading through this thread:

1. The Umpires Hate Carlton
2. We want to pay them....
