If there is a thread on rules.... it would also be worthwhile discussing the bouncing of the ball when running.

Does the rule specifically say it has to be a bounce?

Is kneeling down and touching the ground with the ball really allowed? If so why? Not a good spectacle.

If you can’t do a proper bounce then maybe footy ain’t for you.

Thoughts?
You’ve always been able to touch the ball on the ground.

Touching the ball on the ground has always been considered the same as a bounce and to my mind much harder to accomplish.

Of course it does, but the difference between "Hand holding the ball moving towards the target" and the Butters and Gresham "full swinging holding arm with the punching fist making glancing contact on the way past" is patently obvious.

In every example in the video I posted, when the holding hand is moving, it's still obviously the punching hand that is providing the vast majority of the ball's momentum (even the in-game examples). And given that this is the AFL's scripted "Skills Guide" for handballing, I think it's fair to interpret it as the preferred method of handball.

They even state that if the ball is not PUNCHED FROM THE HAND, then it is a throw. Of all the examples we're arguing here, the only type where the ball might still be punched from the hand is the over the head/shoulder one (though I would argue that it hardly ever is). In all other cases, the fist is just an incidental feature of the action.

Based on that, if we were having this discussion in 2012, then the throw-disguised-as-handball would be adjudicated as just that, a throw.

I don't like the look of some of the handballs and umpires will miss a couple at times, but nothing in the rules to state that you can't move the hand holding the ball. Even the Butters and Gresham ones that make contact with a closed fist

I think it's one of the least of our issues with the rules/adjudication

Like I've said repeatedly, and now for the last time. It's the end-game that concerns me. Taken to the logical conclusion, these "throws disguised as handballs" will inevitably lead to the disappearance of the true handball, thus diminishing the game.

And for what it's worth, the instructions given in that video explicitly state that the ball must be "punched from the platform hand, otherwise it's a throw". This is most definitely not happening in either the Butters or Gresham case. Therefore there's been a relaxation of the rule/interpretation since that video was made.

I thought the umpiring was reflective of the way we played, selfish and undisciplined
What does that even mean? The umpiring was selfish and undisciplined?

BTW our team was not selfish and undisciplined. There were flaws, the over riding one for me was a number of players did not have enough belief both from an individual and team perspective.

I have been playing or watching the game for over five decades. So many variations and interpretations of the rules have transpired. The over riding kpi’s of effective umpires relates to consistency of application of their interpretations. Both teams deserve equal treatment. Tonight was a classic example of inequality. A side starting a game with self doubt, doesn’t get to work through that issue if regularly on the wrong end of inconsistent adjudication.

We lacked awareness, caught way too many times

Hardly put on any effective blocks, allowing the opposition easy access to the ball carrier

No gut running to open space, bombing long, made it easier to outnumber us

Giving away frees after disposals

used to see it often back in the day when grounds werent perfect and too muddy to bounce the ball
With the dodgy saddle step that lets you touch the ball to the ground. It was a lot easier when I was a lot shorter :D
