Analysis Umpires

Noticed in the Collingwood game how quickly their Players got right to the actual mark, rather than other teams taking their time and being told to 'stand' 3,4,5 metres closer to their Goals. Probably in many cases it is due to their tackling pressure, where they are closer to the oppo Player when they take a mark..?

It's amazing how quickly the Umpires call 'stand' before Players can get to the actual mark.
As for Collingwood .. getting to the mark before Umps call 'stand' is another smart 1% er to add to their footy IQ

They teach football IQ over there - last player I saw at Carlton with any football IQ is Eddie Betts.

Yep. We shouldn’t be in that mindset that we just have to play the whistle and when the whistle goes just switch off and that’s it. Craft around the management of free kicks (both for and against) needs to be better trained for awareness and execution within the context of umpire actions

It's a bugbear of mine. Push up to the mark which causes the player to push back to kick properly buying some time for those ahead of the ball to set up rather than allow for quick ball movement.

It's generating clicks, so the AFL will love the discussion.

Taylor Walker throw (probably the most obvious).

And no surprises that Walker wasn't taken off for a HIA after flopping (which was a flop), but no sanction for staging.
Was it Dawson who took a mark on the wing and we were told to stand the mark with Dawson over the mark and closer to goal? He then hand balled to a player running past while standing on the wrong side of the mark, which was just bizare?

If you push up to the mark it is too easy to have a handball receive and be bypassed. Time to push up is within 55m from goal as to or when wide and there is no one near by to get the handball recive

Most footballers with half a brain should be able to work out what is happening around them, no?

I think Collingwood set the mark by zones. In the back half of the ground, they're more willing to drop off the mark and be 5m back corridor side, but the closer you are to goal the more likely they are to be right on you.

They're also more likely to be holding onto the player who has taken the mark to delay them, which should be 50m every time. Should being the operative word.

The ARC seems to only ever turn on when it would **** Carlton.

3 Minutes to go in the last. Daicos handpasses it directly out of bounds. Some umpire says it was "touched" out of bounds... no evidence shown on the broadcast, ARC says nothing. Play on.

Regardless of the last free kick, umpires slaughtered us in the last quarter, Daicos had handfuls of Haynes jumper and also handballed out of bounds (where was the ****ing ARC this week 🙄), McKay gets smashed in head, Kemp gets huge arm chop.

And of course we compound that with a massive choke 🙄

The non in-the-back to Dean for their 2nd goal was the worst

Im not sure about that one. I think as long as it was a forearm, body, its okay. I wouldnt want that paid against Harry.

There were some classic two sided umpiring. Particularly in the 1st quarter. Everytime a Carlton player got tackled it was holding the Ball. Walsh alone got pinged 3 times with no prior opportunity while trying to dispose of the ball.

Also a time when Young almost had his shorts ripped off in the ruck contest in front of the Umpire. The short colour changed to white it was stretched that far. No holding call of course.

Carlton should be lodging a formal “please explain” on how our key forward ends up concussed from a forearm to the face in a marking contest that doesn’t get paid a free kick.
Absolute horse shit.

Deans push in the back should also be questioned.

Would be nice for the club to stand up in some form to the shit storm around us

I would love to know what the umps are told regarding the holding the ball rule.

It seems once or twice every quarter they just pay holding the ball when they player has no prior, is tackled instantly and the balls held in.

They then revert to not not paying the next 5 by the same standard.
