"Feel for the game" is something that should never be said and it is the media's fault for starting this bullshit. An umpire gives away a free kick that is there in the rules during a pivotal part of the match and the media start with the "Oh you have to have the feel for the game blah blah blah".

I don't think that any other sport has this bullshit standard. Massive fan of F1 and yeah the stewards are inconsistent in their rulings week to week (Driver's advocate changes week to week) but they never ever have a ruling regarding a "feel for the sport". If you run another driver off the road they look at the vision and ask "whose corner was it?" and then they make their decision.
did f1 bring in a stand rule after verstappen dominated the last 5 years ?

I think they tried. He has to give everyone a 12 lap head start and he's already back in front by lap 15. Kind of looks like our 2020 flag. They tried to screw us, and we ****ed them over.

Exactly
No one expects umpires to get it right all the time and that’s completely fine but the way feel for the game is wheeled out it just invites inconsistency and those grey areas

It’s either a free kick or it’s not and the punishment for whatever it is needs to be consistent

No umpiring finals differently, no putting the whistle away in the last 5 mins or a close game no rule of the week that they decide they are going to in force after forgetting about every other round

The afl need to identity how they want the game umpired and apply that standard across the board as the benchmark so everyone knows the expectations, fans, players, coaches and umpires themselves

So the soft utensil needed a cattle prod from the supporters
Noooo...not from the ordinary long suffering supporters but from the cashed up Coterie members!
Money talks!

Image a soccer world cup "technically a penalty should have been paid, but it was a close match and didn't want one decision to influence the result".
I'm sure that would go across well!!!

Highlights the overall issue with the framework the umpires work under

It’s mostly based on interpretations of individual umpires so decisions are inherently inconsistent

How can two similar acts have two different outcomes but both be seen as correct under the rules? I don’t care if it’s a 50 against us on the weekend IF that’s how the rule is written but when you highlight the Sydney example now the AFL need to come out and say that not paying the 50 was the wrong decision and the umpire made a mistake

Until we have full time professional umpires that work through a simplified framework s**t like this will continue to happen

None of this feel for the game, just the rules in black and white
If a player does x or y it’s always a free kick no grey areas so that if mistakes are clearly made umpires can easily review the choices and instead of having a way out to justify being wrong by claiming it’s a grey area or feel of the game or some other bullshit they have a clear outcome that should of been called and can work from and build consistency
Rather have the Umps make a wrong decision rather than a wrong interpretation!

campaigner. Lazy journalism. LaCK oF DiSCIpliNe!!1
Inevitable. Someone in the media had to come out and explain away the obvious bias against us.
Quite cleverly written, concede we may have been on the wrong end of a few against Freo, then go on to explain why the massive differential over multiple seasons is the players fault for how they play the game.
I don't think many on here would disagree with what we give away, it's what we don't receive that's the biggest problem.

Did the NRL bring in a "stand rule" when The Saint George Dragons did their Dynasty run of 11 GF wins in a row between the years of 1956 and 1966...

There is money to be made for the AFL these days. They don't want any team dominate, even Geelong.
What you have to do is tow the line and behave or they will punish you.
They would have been quite happy for us to win our 1 flag then disappear like the dogs.
We have to acknowledge why this makes our 4 year run at the top even better is that we did it against everything the CFL wanted, but now we are paying for it.

Do that in Argentina or Brazil and the entire city would burn.

To go further, if they want "Feel of the game" then that should do the same thing for the MRO.

"Well yeah Lynch did break Sicily's jaw but you should have a feel of the situation. Sicily was punching him in the back all day and then Sicily cleans up Baker. On top of that, Lynch is having a massive blue with his missus, What else was Lynch to do? I just think the MRO should have some humanity and feel for the situation"

do the sums..... most games we are getting 15 free kicks or less for the whole game....

this averages out to each umpire giving us individually less than 1 free kick per quarter per umpire.

I am convinced there have been occasions over the past years that one of the umpires have given us 0 or maybe 1 late, for the whole game.

it is impossible to fathom how an umpire can go four quarters and very probably only give zero, 1 or 2 free kick/s to a tiger jumper in 100 minutes of footy.

In a number of games this year we have have had almost no free kicks paid for whole quarters. I think it was the Saints game we were given nothing in the third QTR and on the weekend we were given two in the third, one of those being an out on the full free 🤣

Just had my "I love getting paid to take a bog" time and had a thought about the unintended consequences of this shithouse umpires. The fact we don't get rewarded for high contact and we are starting to rarely see HTB paid means that it will start to condition the players to play with bad habits as they don't want to give away a free kick or don't want to do something heroic and not be protected.

I do like how Pies and Essendon are winning frees due to their manic pressure but when we applied manic pressure better than anyone for 5 years that was supposedly the main reason we gave so many free kicks away....

So true, it’s where the argument and Ralph’s article fall apart.

Exactly this Shaky. Even if we are undisciplined, that doesn’t explain why we don’t get paid the free kicks we should. No one is disputing most of the ones against us.

There was one match where we had only received 3 free kicks up to 3/4 time. How is that possible if the game is being umpired fairly? I don’t believe any side would only infringe 3 times in 3 quarters. Just rubbish.
