Affect the game or not?

What annoyed me the most was how Geelong players would get spun 360 degrees or run down, but the ump would call 'play on.' What do we have to do to get a holding the ball free?

Its incredibly frustrating. Spinning Ablett 360 and and then HE gets the free kick. The guy has just been spun 360 in a tackle of course he's going to go flying once the tackle is released. But he wasn't dumped or obstructed behind the play. There is no doubt the aura surrounding Geelong effects the way the umpires see the game. Its nearly impossible to get a holding the ball paid against them.

Or take Rookes contact on Cross. If that was Picken on
Selwood i guarantee you it would have been a free. The same rules dont apply equally to both sides. It's hard to speak about it without sounding like
sour grapes but who cares. Ive spoken to many neutral supporters who
agree.

Also its incredibly inconsistent. First quater you can hardly touch a Geelong
player without giving away a 50, last quater the whistle goes away and
its no holds barred , anything goes! In the same game! (i dont mind that kind of umpiring by the way,the last quater was great to watch, but geez its inconsistent)

it might of gone both ways but i felt Geelong got some real soft ones that influenced them getting 5 goals up, we got a few towards the end but they are not that precious when you are behind.

From what I recall, we didn't get a free kick in the third quarter (fairly sure we had 7 at half time, and still 7 at 3qtr time). Also interesting that Ray paid 7 free's to Geelong, 1 to us (from SEN). Thanks Razor

Not blaming them for the loss in any way though. We had chances, and I'm still extremely proud of the boys.

Woeful display by the umps in the first half and although we deserved to be down at half time, they certainly didn't help.

I thought Aker's comments on Triple M regarding the last contest with David Johnson were funny - "I'm not sure which free kick they missed - the first, second, third or fourth hold or the push in the back!"

Although I didn't think there was a whole lot in it, I have seen worse paid (many of those in the first half).

As disappointing as Cooney was last night, it may have lisfted his confidence if he was permitted to run for the ball without some red headed horror-head wrapping his arms around him all night. Absolutely disgracefull that this was allowed to continue all night while they paid borderline free kicks.

We certainly had our chances last night but I thought we had very little assistance from the umpires. They were poor.

Yep I thought the umpiring was bad they got like 5-6 goals directly from free kicks...

it seemed they were getting all the soft frees and we weren't

It was incredibly frustrating

It really annoys me that our midfielders do not bloke for the likes of cooney and griffin to give them a chop out a from a tag.

Geelong do it for Ablett

Carlton do it for Judd..

Why dont we?

That's a strange stat about Razor as I hadn't noticed him much so possibly the free kicks were there. Backhanded compliment from an umpire hater. I thought James was more of a factor giving frees to Geelong and not giving them to us. Chappy's first goal, open hand to side of head given as too high whereas Aker's monstering at that last attempt went unpaid. Hands around the stomach paid to them and not to us. Ablett gets touched he gets a free, Cooney virtually gets r*ped all night by the ugliest female alive and gets nothing. It was like James was in awe of Geelong and if they did something wrong it was because we did something wrong whereas if we did something wrong it was because Geelong did something right. (Drawn out but I think you know what I mean.)

Also we get tackle and it's holding the ball, they get tackled and it spills forward it's play on.

Great comeback by us. Glad our game plan was to man up in our forward line and in the centre. Result could have gone either way, we are thereabouts on that form.

GO DOGS

Couldn't agree more with the 360 degrees comment. It seems like that Cats could do anything they wanted with the ball but once they got tackled they had a full 360 degrees to get rid of it. With the Bulldogs if they hadn't got rid of it before they were tackled they were gone.

The best example was Wojinski. He ran about 20 metres out of defence, got tackled, dropped the ball - play on. Griffin - runs 2 metres, gets tackled, holding the ball.

At least Hahn got a holding the ball decision against Ablett - nearly fell of my seat.

Cats got 4 goals directly from frees, plus one or two others that were the kick that set up a goal.

Still, after all that we still had our chance to win it so no excuses!

Judd/Kerr/Ablett - members of the 360 club!

I think you will find Carlton don't do it for Judd. He has to do the hard work for himself now, unlike at WCE

Or Cooney could walk hard to beat the tag instead of walking and jogging at most stages in the game

I'm sure if the doggies got the biscuits instead of the cats, there would be little mention of the umpiring on this board and the cat's board would be littered with incidents.

There were some very poor umpiring decisions for both teams last night. What is frustrating is the tendency to pay, at best marginal free kicks and disrupt the natural flow of the contest.

These overofficous men in white are a scourge on the modern game. How refreshing it would be if they just paid the obvious ones with a small bias afforded to the ball player.

Anyway, the doggies were stiff to lose. They match up well with the cats and will be there abouts at the business end of the season.

Also, AKA was sensational. Took some telling marks under extreme pressure and kicked clutch goals. Incredible for a 300 game player. :thumbsu:

Yeah. Funny how when the whistle went away we seemed to be right in the game. In fact- we were all over you.

Think it was in the last quarter where Cross was put down, and they paid downfield... 5 metres down field.

This was after Geelong got two 50m penalties for it. Whats the difference?

I don't think the umpiring has really had an effect on the end result in any game I have ever been to.

Threads like this just sounds like whinging to me.

The umpiring was disgraceful. How many goals did Geelong get early from soft free kicks that weren't even there yet in the last quarter the pricks decide to put their whistles away:thumbsdown:

Aker was clearly being scragged with only a few seconds left yet 3 of the idiots couldn't see it happening. Isn't that why we got 3 of them? The umps couldn't have missed it, they were just too soft to call it because it might effect the outcome of the game. Well no s#%t Sherlock! The terrible frees that you willingly gave away in the first quarter also effect the outcome of the game.

You had Cooney being scragged by this orangutan all night and I think the umps only gave him one free kick because of it.

Then I had to listen to Wallsy on 3AW on the way home from the match saying how good the umpiring was because they let the game go in the last quarter !!!

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...Umpires are a neccessary evil.

Boooooooooooooooooring.

Let's not be Collingwood supporters guys.. because we all love bitching about them when they complain about umpires.

Umpires don't win/lose games for us - Brad Johnson had that chance and it didn't come off this time (or last time!)

Let's not forget the poor decision that allowed Big Will a shot at goal last year against Richmond.

Huh? Lake took a mark and couldn't take the kick.

Johnno didn't cost us the game either.

And it was a wrong decision to give the kick to Will.

How does missing a kick for goal after the siren not equate to costing us the game?

Both of those arguments are besides the point - and, in fact you gave hint of the real point in your second sentence - the umpires did not cost us the game. If we were good enough we would've won, Johnno or no Johnno.

I take it you don't get along to many games?
The first half umpiring was a disgrace. If you are going pay soft free kicks one way in the first quarter, pay them the other way in the last.
No way would we have to fight back from so far down had the umpiring been consistent. In fact we probably would've been in front most of the game.

Anyone who says umpires can't influence the result of a game is living in La La Land.

How was it a wrong decision to give the kick to Will? If a bloke can't take his kick becuase he is on one leg then someone else takes it. Not rocket science. Anyway, I think Unnamed1 is really Grant Thomas in disguise!

I would say the first three Geelong goals from soft, not there free kicks cost us the game. You don't wathc much footy do you???
