I have notice a lot of posters asking why we dominated the stats but only won by 1point.

To me, it was the inept umpiring. Now, i don't live in Melbourne. but it seems we get screwed by the umps every week.

Am i just bitter or do i have a point?

I believe there are patches when the umpires are shit, but I think it's like that for all games.

The problem I see is that there are too many grey areas and too many inconsistencies depending on which umpire is making the call, and the bigger problem is that the AFL aren't bothering with this problem.

I agree - The Umpires all day helped the Bombers and we got Screwed a few times.

For Example Fletcher nearlly Kicks Dawes Head Off and that is A-Okay but Swan does a Little Kick That is not okay:mad:

One of the problems I have is the high contact rule, it seems like if you graze them for a second it's deemed as high contact. I think this rule should be let go in most instances instead of quickly punished.

Overall, despite us being down 17-10 re frees, I thought the umpiring wasn't too bad today.

Mistakes either way, we got away with a few, but overall, they let it flow which made it a great game to watch.

Taking nothing away from Essendon they were super but **** they were bad like I seriously recon they missed about 5-8 holding the ball decisions today and that's just for us people always talk about the Pies getting a good run this year we have had a terrible run with the umpiring

Not a fan of the argument that the frees given should be equal on both sides. If we had 17 and they had 10 I wouldn't want the umpires looking for 7 possible frees.

We just need consistency across the board. Pay the same frees not matter what the jumper is.

Umpires came out with GF rules today, they just decided they wouldn't pay anything, and you then get your typical decisions mixed in and messes up the flow of their umpiring. Thought the encroachment 50's were crap, and the in danger was crap, as well as the ruck infringements were crap

A pedantic umpire would have given a shot to heppel right at the end there. i held my breath and we got away with it.

the umpires put the whistle away for much of it, so lots of frees weren't called. so both supporters would probably have certain incidents they could bring up that went against them. but overall i think it was pretty even and only the goldsack incident really puzzled me. Actually thought the umpires were really good today and didn't effect the result at all.

A pedantic umpire would have given a shot to heppel for in the back right at the end there. i held my breath and we got away with it.

exactly. I could pull the game apart and name 3 decisions that we should have got, and you could equally name another 3 that you deserved.

it was a great game of football and you guys got up by a point. don't sully it by whinging about the umpires, can't we leave that crap to Carlton??

Holding the ball just isnt paid the way it used to be.

Push in the back no longer requires hands.

High tackles get paid because of the momentum the tackle takes. If you tackle legally and by tackles end your arm is over the opponents shoulder its considered high.

50 metres for enterung the protected area is just ridiculous

Thought the umpiring was pretty good today. It was frustrating early when no holding the balls were paid but I quickly got used to it, as I am sure the players did and the interpretation was consistent throughout the match.

The only decision which I was annoyed about was the kicking in danger, either both needed to be paid or neither.

Thought we were lucky with the push in the back at the end but overall a well umpired game.

I agree Swooop. It's not only todays game but a fair few over the last few weeks. There has quite obviously been a direction in regards to the holding the man rule and the umpires are really letting play go on around the stopages with the onus on the players to get the ball moving rather than simply go to a ball up.

DTM is spot on. All we ask for is consistency. That was the worst example today but there were many more.

Why is jolly slaughtered in the ruck every week? happened again today.
but we won. it would be a bigger issue if we lost.

side by side

Umpiring didn't favor anyone. Holding the ball decisions were missed about 20 times combined between both teams.

I think it's important to understand the umpiring was disappointing for the right reasons: pay holding the ball if it's there. Other decisions I didn't have much concern over really with exception of Goldsack's shot on goal.

Umpiring was fair for both sides, dodgy calls for each team but it happens with every game.

As mentioned before, you could mention 3 dodgy calls you got the rough end from, and we can name 3 for us. The 50s paid for players standing near the player with the ball is just pathetic though.

I am seriously worried that the game will become even softer.

The umpiring today was good in some ways but just bullshit in others. I really liked how they let everything go when players ducked their heads into tackles, because if you make the high contact you should not get a free.

However the in danger was ridiculous. Fletcher nearly took Dawes' head off. The interpretation is whether or not it is likely to cause injury, and I'm pretty sure that a big swipe at the ball is more dangerous than a little toepoke that didn't follow through at all. Just my opinion though;)

Jolly gets r*ped by the umpires every week, it is just ridiculous, I couldn't believe my eyes when he got a free in the ruck, I needed to wipe my eyes and make sure I was actually awake.

The in-the-back is just majorly inconsistent, it has been for 5 years (ever since they introduced the hand-in-the-back interpretation because the umpires were so blind that they needed help with the rule). It is totally crap, it depends whether or not the umpire can see or not.

Holding the ball seems to have gone out the window, there were 5 or 6 instances in the first half alone where Essendon players had MASSIVE prior opportunity yet failed to dispose of the ball correctly. It appears to me that players are allowed to make an attempt without disposing correctly even if they have had a prior, which is plain and simply wrong. Ajd tyen they picked out a couple of ours to penalise. Very frustrating:mad:

Goldsack also got pinged for chopping the arms in the first quarter when he punched the ball cleanly out of Hibberd's hands (when he did his hammy), without touching him at all. The arm chop rule is also very inconsistent.

As for encroaching in the area, 5 metres is a lot further than what people think. I am happy to see it paid if it is consistent, which today it simply wasn't.

Why do they let it go more when it is a big game, or if it is wet? Is there a clause in the rule book that says when it is wet pay less frees? Again,
inconsistency.

Overall, crap.

I barely noticed the umpires. I thought the kicking-in-danger free against Swan was soft but you could make an argument for it. Blair getting an in-the-back was also technically there but I'd prefer not to see them paid.

There were a couple I was confused about; namely Dawes' 50m against, it looked to me as though he was trying to stand the mark?

Also, what was the deal with Fasolo taking his 50m penalty, hitting a target I50, and then having to take the kick again because he kicked it from too far away? Took a shot at goal away from us and resulted in an OOB, IIRC.

But really, I don't think there were any massive howlers, and there've been a lot of games where the free kick count was closer than 10-17 and yet I thought we'd been reamed. We definitely weren't hard done by today on the whole.
