Umpires to use stump microphones at World Cup
February 06 2007 at 10:26AM Karachi - Umpires will be wired to stump microphones in the World Cup to help them make decisions, a Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) official said on Tuesday.

The issue was discussed in detail at January's meeting of the chief executives of the International Cricket Council (ICC) member boards, Saleem Altaf, the director of cricket operations for the PCB said.

"It has been decided to use a new technology for this purpose and a British company would be providing the software," Altaf said.

"Umpires during the World Cup will be able to use the stump microphones to pick up snicks and inside edges to help them improve their decision making," he added. The World Cup will run from March 13 to April 28 in West Indies.

The ICC experimented with the idea in 2004 in the Champions Trophy and countries have also tested it in their domestic cricket.

"In the past inferior equipment has been used and it didn't really help the umpires. This time the umpires will be able to use state of the art technology," Altaf said.

of course its not needed for the australians like hussey and fleming tonight twice he edged it and was out lbw.

Why? If they can't hear edges from a pitch length away, they shouldn't be umpiring at international level.
well have you seen the shockers lately? it can get pretty noisey out there, and maybe if they have it we can stop all these stupid posts vs hussey for not walking etc.

Paul Nixon in Perth? He crashed the ball into the keepers gloves and then has the audacity to give Hussey stick for not walking.

Shudder to think what that average would be if he had correctly been given out.

But mistakes will rise too. Not much will change, more people will get given out incorrectly though.

oh get real his score didn't make a diffrence. if hussey was out i couldn't see lee and bracken leading australia to victory.

What!?!

What is hard to BAD on?

I think the wiring up the umps is a shocker of a move, they could at least trial it in the Bangladesh, Bermuda and Canada matches first. Its just not logical!

How so?

Can't get much worse than this summer.

How many times does it sound like an edge when its actually not?

I can name a number of occasions when straight away going by the sound I thought that it was out, but, after looking at the replay I realised that it wasnt.

If the ump can also hear the sound, it will increase the chances of them giving it out, wrongly.
