Umps

Bounces the last couple of rounds have been shocking. I think with the drought the umps have forgotten how to bounce the ball on softer ground!

something like that, l was watching collingwood v north the bounce in the last quarter when straight to a north player and cost the pies a goal

today was the first game this year where the voice box copped an almighty pounding (partially because of umpiring decisions).

these are little people being directed by little minded people who have no idea of the spirit of the game.
i for one and getting really sick of the variation in interpretation of some of these extremely frustrating rules. who knows if holding the ball will be a hot issue next week, maybe it will be hands in the back?
common sense is very rarely achieved when it comes to umpiring and there is no way that tool Geishem defend his little puppets when challenged with the question 'Is this, so far, the worst umpiring we've seen in years?'
compared to any other professional competition it is a dead set joke. this year has been so far and away the worst umpiring i've ever seen in 15 or so years following the league, not game, LEAGUE (AFL)

The hit from Hunt on Moore was a bullsh*t call that resulted in a goal, even the commentators said Josh was stiff-he was laying a shephard because he was within 15m of the ball!!!

The problem stems a bit from the game plan the swans implemented to get back into the game. When you have massive amounts of players around the ball not much becomes clear cut. People are being knocked, hit high, etc every play. And it seems that in those circumstances the umpires just expect you to get rid of it (i.e. drop or throw it out) rather than obey the rules.

It was definitely not all one way traffic, the swans had their share of shockers too. I think we were a bit more harshly done by but in the end it was just bad umpiring all around.

Back in the day if you took a big mark to the ground under control and it spilled when you made contact to the ground with your arms or the ball it was paid. I would have paid Blakes.

Nah I didn't think it was a mark (much as I would have liked to have seen him cover himself in glory). I don't think he had enough control of it and it certainly wasn't a situation where he had the mark and it was dislodged when he hit the ground.

I'm normally pretty passive about the umps when watching the game, believing that what goes around comes around and that they are only trying to do a difficult job the best way they can. Having said that, my family were well aware what I thought of most of Yesterdays decisions...and they were in a different part of the house.

At one stage it felt to me as if we were playing a couple of extra players, with one arm bigger than the other from holding it up to give the swans frees.

I'm not so one eyed that I can't see the bad decisions made in favour of the Cats also, but these were far outweighed (imho) by an avalanche of inconsistancy, poor judgement calls and a refusal to play on to advantage:mad:

The sad thing is that this standard of umpiring detracts from the pleasure taken from watching a hard fought win against a quality opposition.

That guy was going off his nut! You don't need to be a professional lip-reader to catch what he was saying, and I agree with his general sentiments if not his choice of words.

The umpiring was bordering on downright cheating in my opinion. By far easily the worst umpiring i have ever witnessed. Sydney got some bad decisions also, but nowhere near what we had to put up with.

Those of us who watched the telecast had the benefit of replays to see just how bad the umpiring was, in all the ways mentioned so far, but what about the commentators.

There was no recognition of poor decisions (except the Hunt bump, and then only after the replay) and they (especially Tim Lane) seemed to be leading the Swans cheersquad. I used to think Lane was one of the better commentators but lately his calls of Carlton games and yesterdays game have him scratched off my list. He focusses on one team only and doesn't give an unbiassed call. Having said that, Luke Darcey (i think it was) was generally OK.

Worst umpiring of the season so far and i watch most games.

The thing that irritated me about the commentary was how quickly they change camps!! I mean was it just me, or were they All Geelong....then All Sydney....then All Geelong (in the last 10 minutes).

Much like the state of the game.

Young children tend to support whoever is winning at the time.

The missus even commented on this. Honestly, Tim Lane, Walls and Ox should all be retired immediately.

Yeah I know Ox didn't do this game but it's still true!

Lol at the commentary. Apparently St Kilda can beat us when they get their game together. >_>.

I think we'll see the results of Terry's 5 year plan before St Kilda get their game together.

I almost fell out of my chair at that line though. I thought I must've been mishearing things.

I've never understood this obsession some people have with St Kilda (and Freo for that matter). There have been a lot of teams with much better lists that didn't win a flag. Just because you have a bunch of guys who were early draft picks doesn't mean you automatically even make a grand final.

No way. The worst decision by far was the crap free paid from a shepherd (totally legal), done by Hunt which lead to a shot 10m out. Hunt went to shepherd the point kick in, did it fairly and within 3m of the ball yet was penalised. Over officiating!

Is this footy anymore? That umpire needs be assessed for glasses.

I noticed lil' hungry (Kev Bartlett), had a go at the MRP about West's bump, is he going to have a go at this? Absolutely disgraceful. Attitudes such as Kev's are killing the game.

Long live the bump! Keep it free!

Couldn't agree more the ump totally over reacted to the swan going down was even worse hearing him on the mic saying he was 100% sure it was a free. Guess he will be doing the VFL next week

Simple answer is:

<-----------------> Swans 15m
<----------------------------------> Cats 15m

Some of the decisions today were insane. Calls made by umpires out of position, different rules for each team, and some out right "Here you go Sydney have a free goal to keep it fair" Really disappointed me today.

Cheers

MC

I actually thought Luke Darcy was the worst.
Actually they all sucked.
Fair enough, we didn't kick a goal for a while there.
But neither did the Swans! No mention of that though...
I noticed it last too, Darcy was having a lovefest with Kingy.
That Hunt decision in the last quarter was disgustingly wrong and it barely got a mention.
So sick of the blatant barracking for the underdog.
Suppose that's what happens when you're on top of the mountain.
Gimme Eddie, Garry and Dermie any day compared to those spuds...

There were three really bad decisions that stood out for me.

1) 2nd Quarter: Adam Goodes scoops the ball between his legs, clear throw (even the commentators said so) and is called play on. I noticed from standing room, my friend noticed from the Hickey Stand the commentators noticed from the Brownlow Stand and yet the umpire 5m away apparently missed it.

2) Last Quarter: The free-kick against Hunt for a totally legal bump on Moore. The umpire probably had the West-Clarke decision in his head and thought he'd appease the whingers by paying a free kick. Too bad it was a perfectly legal bump.

3) Last Quarter: Late on in the last, the ball comes into the goal square. Chapman is out numbered. Brett Kirk full on pushes him in the chest to get him out of the contest and the other Swans player takes the mark. No free kick is awarded. This was no hands in the back, it was a full blown push out of a contest.

The umpiring was pathetic yesterday. Like most I am pretty one-eyed, but I can admit when we free kick is rightly paid against us or when we deserve to be pinged. But the number of soft free kicks the Swans got was ridiculous. I reckon in the first few minutes of the 3rd Qtr the free kick count was 5-1 in favour of the Swans. It seemed every contest was a Swans free kick.

But when you've got the pretentious little twat in McBurney umpiring we shouldn't expect anything different.

it was darcy that seemed real biased towards sydney wasnt it.

was always going on about "if sydney did...." almost willing them to win.

the umpiring was ordinary but i only have issue with the 15m rule, that sydney kick out in the 3rd qtr that barely travelled 10m let alone 15m was okay but the 3 previous kicks out of defence by geelong were not 15m.

no problem with the geelong kicks not being 15m, just consistency when the other team is chipping the ball around.

Very hard to get when you have 3 guys "intrepreting" the rules - that's always been the big problem. One guy's 15 metres is another guy's 13 metres - you say tomato....

Then again, it wouldn't be the first time a male got measurements wrong:rolleyes:

I noted the inconsistency with the 15m kicking rule - I reckon some our passes travelled a good 20m at the least and it was still ruled 'play on'. That was starting to piss me off, since many of our little passes were in the backline trying to work our way out of trouble.

The Hunt free was an absolute shocker - how it was paid as in the back I will never know! Since when did fair shepherds become illegal?
