Unfunny "Comedians"

Yeah Luke Heggie goes alright, he has an edge to his comedy, doesn't suffer fools, takes no prisoners, he goes hard or goes home.

Back to unfunny comedians, I watched some of Akmal's comedy special on Ch7 last night, I switched over to SBS for more laughs.

They showed Lawrence Mooney's comedy special a few weeks before that and he is genuinely funny, an unpopular opinion I know.

Have you seen the episode he was on, on Selling Houses Australia?

It was several years ago but geeze he is a funny campaigner

'i need to sell this house because this house is trying to kill us"
"Look there's a sight you don't see everyday. Shaynna Blaze with cushions!"

A few 'comedians' are funny in the right environment. UK panel shows are the best for this.

Not that Andy Maher is a comedian but I enjoy The Front Bar on Channel 7 because they bounce off each other. But I probably wouldn't go to see just Mick Molloy or Sam Pang talking to a crowd for an hour.
Pangs tonight show is awful.

He's a great host of the Logies and he's awesome on TFB. TS not so much imho

Steve Vizard lasted a while, and Andrew Denton was excellent but mostly the talk show concept has never really taken off here.

I really like the 1% club

I loathe Jim Jefferies
Lee Mack is great on the UK version. Quick-witted and a little bit dry, but perfect for engaging the audience and keeping the show chugging along.

Everything Jeffries isn't. The promo for that Ladies' Nights special...

Lee Mack is great as the host of the UK 1% Club but I prefer him on Would I Lie To You with Rob Brydon and David Mitchell.

I'm not a fan of Jim Jefferies as a host or as a stand up.

Shaun Micallef had a crack at a tonight show too back in 2003 on Ch9, I thought it was pretty good but it didn't last too long.

It isn't. She pivoted a couple of years ago because she didn't want do self-deprecating gags any more. So now she does... whatever it is you call her thing.
I reckon most people watched Nanette because it was getting such mainstream attention and think that's all there is to her. She is actually very intelligent, her humour well crafted, and her last two shows Douglas and Something Special have been enjoyable and more traditional stand-up shows (and for the record, I think Nanette was special even if it wasn't comedy, but it was a moment in time when she was at her absolute lowest).

I've watched most of Jim Jeffries Netflix specials and I reckon maybe half of one has been decent and the rest barely raised a smile, so he's a fair nomination.

Actually, now that I think about it, Australian comedians/comediennes are generally unfunny.
I find our atheletes to be more funny
Aaron Chen, Monty Franklin and Ronny Chieng (even though hes not Australian but lived here for a lot of his life) are 3 that i rate. Comedy is subjective so im sure we all disagree

Shaun Micallef is too highbrow for commercial TV.

Used to love his High Horse segments and his hosting of the Logies was piss funny. But his market is a niche ABC audience.

Yeah his highbrow humour was better suited to the ABC where he hosted shows like Newstopia and Mad as Hell.

At the same time Rove Live was the most popular show on TV. You have to know who your audience are, and Shaun Micallef critiquing the geographical inaccuracy of 'Coast to coast, LA to Chicago' in Sade's Smooth Operator is not for everyone.

I watched Nanette having already seen Hannah Gadsby previously on comedy festival specials. Not my cup of tea.

Jim Jefferies is definitely an acquired taste. Hearing someone drop the C-bomb 100 times is enough for a lot of people to tune out. I enjoyed Bare and some of his earlier specials more than the more recent ones. IMO he's trying to be like Jimmy Carr but doesn't really have the natural balance of being a TV presenter and also a guy that says horrendously offensive things in stand up. Bill Burr tones it down depending on the platform/audience but whether he's doing a special or 5 minute segment with Jimmy Fallon or Conan or whoever he comes across as the same guy. I watched The Jim Jefferies Show and it was like watching him try to be John Oliver. Weird.
