Unskilled jobs that pay well

When my wife's job in a cafe ended , she put down for temp work.
On of the first things that came up was a job at an apple orchard, that also had fruit coming in from other orchards and organisations.

Her hourly rate was OK without being exorbitant.

They trucked in some plums and things from somewhere.
Her job was to go through the boxes and sort the good ones from the bad ones. Some of the bad ones were pretty off.
So she did it.
Then some supervisor told her that some of the borderline ones should have been rejected. So she starts rejecting them.
Then another supervisor comes by after its all finished, and proclaims that they don't have enough good ones, so its back into the boxes of rejected ones ( which had her feeling physically ill ) getting back the borderline ones.

When your labour is expensive , its a good idea to get a bit organised.

(( my wife refused to work for the orchard any more, and is much happier back in an office job )) .
True, true. I should have been clearer. I didn't mean high wages for Australian conditions. More, high wages comparitive to farm work overseas.

Dad just bought some car parts from overseas. The cost of buying 2 and having it shipped here from the us was a mere 1/10th of the price of buying 1 from a local supplier.

I know there are things which push prices up here, but not that much. And he paid the shipping himself, which already eliminates one of those things.

Yeah, the whole idea of retailers and wholesalers is to provide a layer or layers of convenience between producers and consumers. If I can get a box of Bosch spark plugs to my door for $30 from wherever they are made, why would I go to Super Cheap Auto and pay $100?

I know a guy who's a major player in the fruit market in NE Vic. Asked him once, why fruit grown in our own country is so expensive. More expensive than bananas in England imported from Paraguay etc. He put it down to one thing, wages. Now, he's in the industry so may be just protecting his self interests, but I'd imagine it's partially true.

Our wages are high, but not the be all and end all. I think our fruit is expensive because of the supply chains involved. We truck everything long distances (diesel ain't free) and then most people buy from the supermarket duopoly in cap cities.

Apples are about $5-6/kg at Woolies. Cheapest are usually about $4/kg on sale. The people who actually grow apples make a living selling them for a lot less than $5/kg. Coles and Woolies pay them a pittance, then the price to the consumer reflects the added costs of their storage and distribution plus their profit margin. But people don't want to go to orchards or fruit and vege markets so this isn't going to change any time soon.

IMO wages have the biggest impact in small businesses with variable turnover and low margins. Cafes that are busy for hours at a time print money. Takes a minute to make a coffee you can sell for $4.50 that uses about 30c of ingredients. Cha-ching. But if you only make 3 an hour...

My old local cafe/restaurant used to have maybe 2 wait staff on at night, one person at the counter and then at least one chef in the kitchen - probably with a sous chef/dishpig helping out. So every hour they were open was probably costing anywhere from $100-200/hr in wages. Call dinner service 6-9pm and you could be looking at $600 going out before anything comes in. So in order to break even on the night you would need to do upwards of $600 in trade, more like $800-1000. One or two quiet nights in the week and you are up against it.

Not unskilled. Doesn't look complicated on face value, but they don't let just anyone deal with the gas/electrical connections.
Only thing is if you are a tradie and you specialise in electronics you could make a mint

Hi guys,

There are still some companies that pay exceptionally well for unskilled jobs (eg. I think Kraft foods pay very well for machine operators). Unfortunately these companies are all dying out, or moving production offshore (dinosaurs is what I call them). You just need to be lucky to find one.

Below is what I earnt last financial year, and I am already well over 100K for unpcoming financial year. I just basically load cardboards and a run machine. I am living the dream.

Good luck finding your dream job.
