You've answered your own question. Half back flank is a part of the outside midfielder sphere role wise, and isn't a defensive role. Of the outside mid roles it is also the most vital one.

Especially as it has become more and more vital to have skilled ball movers back there seeing you need to break a zone to be able to score in the first place. Every side right now (and quite likely permanently) lives and dies on their offensive contribution at half back because the easiest place to pin a team is in their defensive 50. Countering that is much more important than preventing the occasional to rare goal (and I say rare because it's more then likely whoever stands on a half back is more focused on defense then offense).

Milera belongs there, truly (much more than he does forward which is wasting such a skill set), but as vital as it is, it's a stepping stone for midfield minutes. it is on the easier side role wise due to the amount of easy ball available.
The problem is, with 666 it now IS a defensive role too. One of the main reasons we have struggled this year is an inability to adapt to 666. Milera has been exposed on multiple occasions 1 on 1, and seems panicked resulting in turnovers

I like the way you're thinking, but M Crouch & Betts will almost certainly both be playing Rd 1. CEY and McAdam out
I didn't hold CEY too highly, but him being out from the bye certainly changed our midfield.
As mentioned, but don't think it will happen is the AFC trading one of the Crouch bros for a high draft pick.
If Eddie does play I don't think he will be in for long, he will lose his spot to someone unless massive turnaround in how he plays and how our forward line structures up next season.
Crows can’t have M Crouch, B Crouch and Sloane in the middle, it hasn' worked, they don't run both ways hard enough and both Crouch's kicking is suspect. We get beaten on the outside and you have what happened countless times this year...back 6 under pressure, either a goal or chip chip chip turnover goal.
Look whatever does happen, big changes need to occur as there is no plan and if there is one we don't have the players necessary to implement it.

Untouchables are Talia to hold the defence together, Sloane to hold the midfield together, Fogarty for future prospects, and Brad given his potential and the amount we’ve invested in getting him right. Jones/McHenry are probably in there also.

Everyone else is gettable with the right offer, should another club want them badly enough.

Then there’s those who really need to be moved on irrespective what offers come in...

Kelly is in contract negotiations...FFS he is part of the problem! Trade, trade, trade!
From the Tiser...
Adelaide is deep in negotiations to re-sign out-of-contract defender Jake Kelly.
Kelly, 24, is keen to stay with the Crows and he and his manager Adam Ramanauskas have been in discussions with the club since midway through the season.

Recruited from Oakleigh Chargers with pick 40 at the 2014 rookie draft, Kelly has played 75 games, including all 22 this season.

He increased his ranking-point average from 67.3 to 74 in 2019, rating elite for spoils and above-average for intercept and contested marks, intercept possessions and kicking efficiency.

Ramanauskas told The Advertiser “things are progressing nicely” with discussions to re-sign and “hopefully we get something done in the next week or two”.

“Jake and I have been talking all year about what he wants to do – it hasn’t taken any longer than expected,” Ramanauskas said.

Easy to have good kicking efficiency if you only kick it 20m sideways all the time...FMD

I disagree it isn't a defensive role at all even within a 6-6-6. That's only temporary at best and really our lack of adjusting was moving away from a run and gun style. Slow, stagnant, patient football whilst nessecary needs to be the back up plan for the options when run and gun can't happen. Completely wierd seeing how much Pyke loved pace prior to this year.

Turnovers are a symptom of this. You're forcing someone to create in a style completely devoid of any reliable structure beyond the back lines. Of course they're going to look bad. No one can work miracles. Fix that structure, you fix Milera.

FMD - Mackay mark II. Will hang around forever.

He and Hartigan should never be allowed to wear the guernsey again

He also is prepared to put his body on the line from the few times I’ve seen him play

Sholl does not play tall like Kelly can and he's nowhere near as good at killing a contest as Kelly either, in fact he's a very different player both in build and the type of player I'd be comfortable he could play on. He's the very essence of an outside player that I think will eventually play wing in our AFL team. In my view Kelly is a defensive weapon, Sholl more an offensive weapon.

No one in theory is untouchable, but the players I would keep as a core group unless we are provided significant overs.

Fogarty
Doedee
Brouch
Jones
Brown
Mrouch
Smith
Keath
O'Brien
Seedsman
Himmelberg
McHenry
Gallucci

Those who are key leaders & to the culture of our club.
Sloane
Walker
Betts
Talia

Players I would consider for trading who could get some value (not all to go, but say half).
Jenkins
Hartigan
Lynch
Atkins
Jacobs
Gibbs
Greenwood
Kelly
Laird

Gone / Should go
Otten
Douglas
Mackay

Why is there so much hate for Kelly?
He's been one of our better players this year.
It's like everyone's stuck in 2017, which is ironic because that's when the same people want us to stop focussing on

Agree Talia and Kelly have been the two most dependable backmen this year by a country mile

Agree no one is untouchable, all comes down to currency and what a team is willing to offer, say for a brad crouch, if for example Carlton we know has missed out on Cog, and want a quality midfielder, they may be getting a little towie and throw a bit over for him, if its enough he goes, we aren't really going to challenge at the moment so sell high buy low

Keep. Keath, Talia, Doedee
Out Kelly Hartigan

Keep. Tex (still kicked 43 goals) give him some decent ball movement and he’ll finish it off.
Greenwood, strong marking option as a forward
Out JJ, Lynch, Murphy

Keep Crouches (give them a decent midfield coach)
Out. DMac. Atkins Knight Sauce

That’s 9 starters gone plus 2 retired. 11 players is 50% off a game day 22.

Haven't watched too many games then. I like him up to the point he takes a mark then has no clue for 20 seconds other than to chip it 20m sideways as any player that was free is now manned up.

Fog, Jones, Doedee, Talia and Sloane.

Everyone else is available for the right price.

Lynch and Jenkins are available at below cost price.

Jacobs and Mackay are free to good home.

Ah the old ‘I disagree so you haven’t watched many games’ argument. Almost as good as Kane Cornes’ ‘how many AFL games have you played champ?’

Newsflash: our entire team does that

McAdam
Stengle
Matt Crouch
Milera
ROB

General gist of my thoughts here:

Forward line, Fogarty and Himmelberg are definitely a long term 1-2 punch with Himmelberg being able to pinch hit in the ruck. Give them time to build chemistry. Small forward wise, i'm pretty content where we are at as well, McAdam looked promising in the SANFL, and Stengle looks like he'll be a solid small forward.

Midfield wise. Jones, Milera, Gallucci and McHenry are our future midfield, don't trade them under any circumstance. ROB is a on track to be a very good long term ruck, and good enough currently that we shouldn't be entertaining the massive fu** up that will be getting Grundy. Matt Crouch is not one to trade either, had a poor year but he's perfect foil for a midfield being someone who is capable of shouldering the inside work and allowing better players to excel, his value to us going forward is going to be far higher then what we could attract for him now.

Defensively. Talia is still reliable, and Doedee has shown a lot in his past season. Seedsman sits as the best of our outside core, and I'd be comfortable keeping Smith too (Though, not enough to put him in the untouchables). Butts should be developed as a CHB next season, we can afford the development year there.

Tex/Sloane most likely aren't tradable regardless at this point.
galluci, are you kidding me the guy is not a natural footballer and disposal is atrocious. One id trade if anyone is interested

A shockingly bad call, on par with the people calling Milera a dud after his 2nd season.

Gallucci is a slow burn but is flashing signs he'll be a very good offensive midfielder in the mid term (seriously there was around 3-4 games he hit very damaging numbers in Pykes graveyard). Trading him right now would just burn us horrifically.

Judging any player (particularly young uns) based on their performance under this regime is fraught.
Bring in coaches and a system that players believe in and watch players like Milera, Gallucci, EH, Fogarty, Stengle improve. For that matter, im not convinced Gibbs is cooked either. He plays like a fringe player at the moment, but he was absolutely elite at Carlton. The Carlton fans I know were genuinely shattered to lose him. Maybe he’s just magically transformed into an average footballer, but I suspect his 2019 performance is linked to the way the club is run.
