Unwritten Road Rules

I've been doing a bit more driving than usual due to the holiday season and it's come to my attention that there are many more rules above and beyond the standard, legally enforced rules that exist. Here are a few I've come across:


1. If you are at a set of traffic lights with a ute next to you, the driver will see it as some sort of challenge and speed off.

2. That bike in your blind spot will choose to pass just as you need to turn left

3. Four Wheel Drive vehicles are not required to indicate whilst changing lanes.

4. Country folk don't like hook turns

5. Hot girls drive hot cars

6. That car up ahead that is driving 10kms under the limit and swerving all over the place is NOT a drunk driver, it's your grandma.

When overtaking someone, nail it. The less time you spend on the other side the safer the process is.

I always watch the angle of the other car's front tire coming towards me on long trips. Gives you a sighter on whether they are going to perform a head on with you or not.

Maybe GH can chip in on some tips to avoiding the booze bus.....

Night driving - if you can see tail lights ahead of you, strictly low beam.

Train yourself to know where your car is in relation to the outside paint marking - that way even if a car is coming at you on high beam with ten 150 watt spotlights on, you will not be dazzled and will be confident of your position on the road. The bonnet ornaments on older cars were great for this as a sighter.

Learn how to steer with your foot - if you overcook it going into a corner, the worse thing you can do is power off or hit the skids, the car will want to understeer off the road - put the boot into it and the car will naturally follow the arc you have set. (within reason of course - if you have a 500 horse monster, finesse is required to avoid oversteer and ending up on your arse).

Oh, and hook turns I don't do.

Always wave when someone stops, slows, moves over to let you in or past. It is just plain rude otherwise.

Don't try and do a u-turn on a busy road (Burke, Toorak, Chapel, Glenferrie etc) right after someone was kind enough to let you out of your car space.

Every road user hates each other, unless there is a speed trap. Then we're united.

Yes you refer to the incident outside sandown yes see the booze bus immediately perform a mad u turn and don't look back! It worked

Last week end on our way home from looking at Xmas lights, this Piss head was tooting at us and swerving and trying to force us of the road for a good distance too, just as i was going to brake suddenly and make him pull over because i had enough of this clown i noticed a cop car driving behind him and not long after they pulled him up, had i pulled over and started something it could of turned out alot worse, i had my Wife with me so i had to try not lose it..
There is way too many idiots out there and its no wonder why there is so much road rage and violence on the roads...

Start abusing them and giving them the finger, and at the same time not fully concentrating on walking?

More than likely you'll give them a smile and a double step to let them pass, if they do the same - a double entendre - it becomes a joke.

However, surround yourself with one and a half tons of metal and a spirit of 'revenge' at 100+ clicks and..........well, you know the drill.........

Yer you are right, i was just frustrated because my Wife was scared and i had enough of this clown, im not a road rage type of driver i guess im just lucky the cops were right behind them.
Im on the road a lot and i see alot of bad drivers and hero drivers, but that night was time this kind of thing happened.
Oh well atleast i maintained my cool and the clown got busted..

The worst are people who sit on 85-90 but speed up to 100 when an overtaking lane opens beside them. Actually used this to get out of a speeding ticket - the copper knew exactly what I was talking about.

Beware of anyone with an Amnesty International sticker on their rear windscreen. Experience has show me that they, for some reason, are the worst drivers on the road.

Oh yeah, down Carlisle St way, I've twice narrowly avoided an accident where elderly drivers in the right hand turn lane, who were indicating they would be turning right, suddenly turned left....

Perth is a wonderful place for drivers.....we are the laziest and most selfish in the country...

it may be because they are not so many cars on the road as Melb, but whatever it is, we take great delight in ensuring a three or four lane freeway runs like an overcrowded 1 lane backstreet.

I understand it is mandatory to try to "spread" out the vehicles on our freeway, so to ensure no-one overtakes or goes "too fast"...

the "keep left" rule has yet to be understood in this part of the country and "cruising" in the fast lane is just one of the pleasures you can enjoy here....

hook turns - we don;t have them and if they were introduced to Perth, and someone attempted to execute one in the city the entire road system from Rockingham(south) to Joondalup(North) would gridlock immediately.
