What are your predictions (based on this year's performance) by the vetran players as to when they'll retire in the next 2 years?

Here is my opinion. Their current ages next to their names.

2013
  • Corey (30) (Just not the same as he used to be, slowing down a lot as well).
  • Pods (31) (Beginning to show signs that his body can't handle the toughness of the sport anymore. His performance in 2013 could decide whether he plays on).
  • J Hunt (30) (Maybe) (Also loosing some speed, but packing on a lot of muscle and still good a big presence in our back line).
  • Enright (31) (Maybe) (Made 40 man all Australian this year and played a few stand out games. I think if he has a good 2013 season he will play on another year. Hopefully, mentally, he is still in it unlike Scarlett who faded quickly).
2014

  • Stokes (27) (Didn't have a great season this year, and not expecting much change next year. I think he'll stay on our list till he turns around 30 which will be at the end of 2014. With so many young players coming through, it will be hard for him to remain a weekly player after next season).
  • Chapman (30) (Still a very important player to us, great forward player and has big impacts on games when he plays well. By end of 2014 he will be 33 and probably considering retirement. Though i have no doubt he could play on being a key forward).
  • Kelly (28) (Maybe)(Will be 31 at the end of the 2014 and with age i think he may slow down a little and make his role as midfielder/follower much tougher).

We will need to keep hold of those younger VFL players (Burburry, GHS, Walker, Murcdoch, Semdts and the others. We will have a lot of room to fill in 2 years time).

Maybe swap Enright for Chapman, Kelly should play on to 2015 and Stokes may follow Byrnes at the end of next year.

All subjective, and a lot might depend on where/how the team ends up next year as much as individual performance and/or condition.

You're right though, think we need to hold on to all these rookies we see fit as there are gaps at will open for sure.

I think we'll have three a year for the next four years.

2013: Pods, Corey + Hunt
2014: Chapman, Enright
2015: Kelly, Stevie J + Stokes
2016: McIntosh, Rivers + Kelly
2017: Bartel, Lonergan + Mackie

At a guess with the + players potentially a year later. The good thing is we seem to have succession plans for all up to 2016 so I don't think we'll be caught out too badly.

It's hard to say really. The problem is we have to continue to turnover players to keep the younger ones coming through. I think 2013 will almost certainly be the last year for JC and Pods they would have to have stellar years to keep on and deprive a spot for the younger talents.

I agree Stokes will probably go the way of Byrnes. He does his role effectively but the fact is we have 5-6 forward/mid type kids we need to get rotating through his spot. Could stay for depth or just as easily go.

Dawson Simpson IMO is a player who has to show he is capable if AFL footy in 2013 or should go. I hope he can be out Sandilands but the clocks ticking.

Chapman and Enright could give us value for another 2-3 years as they are just superb footballers. The question lays with how long they want to play.

Kelly, SJ, Bartel, Lonnergan are all 3 years minimum off retirement so wouldn't worry much about it yet.

Does Kelly retire and make a come back?big call.

Chapman was pushing for, IIRC a 2 year contract, but we would only give him one at a time. So he clearly wants to play footy beyond 2013, and thinks his body will hold up. Probably as a permanent forward.

Predicted retirements of the remaining 2007 premiership team.

2013: Corey
2014: Chapman, Stokes
2015: Enright, Hunt
2016: Bartel, Kelly
2017: Mackie, Johnson
2018:-
2019:-

2022: Selwood

I think it's pretty amazing that we are rid of half of that team, and are still looking like contenders for this year's flag. Man I love our club:hearts:

All of Bartel, SJ and Kelly could play for years in a forward pocket. Probably room for just one of them though. I'm looking at Jim-bob :)

Would think SJ would be best suited for that IMO whereas Kelly is probably an out and out mid so I couldn't see him as a FP

Surely Kelly & Bartel will go together, same age, same draft, same decline, same value.
But I don't totally get what you're suggesting here.

Take Kelly off the 2015 one that was a mistake.

I think Kelly will go the same time or a year before Bartel. I just think Bartel's versatility might allow him to play an extra year if he wants to.

Except we have to fit in Ablett there in 3-4 years!?

Not sure, but I think JH & CE both signed a 1 year deal only. They could do that again for a few years I suppose. Was kind of hoping JC would have pulled his own pin this year.
We seem to have extraordinary depth, agree with your last statements.

I know. The club has been monitoring the older blokes more carefully, so one year at a time is pretty sensible.

As disrespectful as it sounds, I agree. His time is up. Had a good patch this year, but times are tight, and if he can't string good games together, it's time to bring in one of our younger promising mids.

Hard to say 100%.We are gearing up for another big preseason which we didn't do this year so players where underdone.

We did this in 2010 and people where saying Ling and JC where gone then and we did a big preseason for 2011 and they played good again. So if they do a big one maybe one or two will get back to 2011 good.

I think JC is still in our top 2 clearance players so someone will need to step up for him to be dropped and passed.

I think Corey and Pods will certainly play their last seasons next year, and I'll reserve judgement on the others until half way through next season.

Hunt looked good last year and can certainly play another 2 years.
Enright is injury free and isn't yet showing any signs of slowing down.
Stokes may be pushed out of the side next year and consider the option.
Chapman dependent on his body may be another option.

I would not rule out some of the younger brigade possibly pushing aside one or two of the older players through just putting in good performances.

I think almost exactly the same as this, for the end of 2013.
Pods/JC very likely.
Chapman possibly.
Stokes/Hunt maybe involuntarily if their form drops away.
Enright very unlikely unless he decides to quit well on top.

which older blokes you think may see new kids give them the push?
Likewise I agree with you and am secretly hoping Guthrie, Simpson and Kersten can play good enough to hold their spot on a consistent basis

End of 2013:
  • Podsiadly (75 games): 100%
  • Corey (~270 games): 80% (he came back stong in 2011 and he was looking like his old self around the time of his 250th, before he got injured. I wouldn't say it's out of the question that he gets his mojo back)
  • J. Hunt (~200 games): 60% (he had an excellent 2012, but I think he'll be feeling the squeeze, in a similar way to Wojcinski last season), once he gets his 200th
  • Chapman (260-265 games): 50%
  • Enright (260-265 games): 10%
Should be looking at a minimum of three retirements from this group, although as MD pointed out, Stokes may find himself in Byrnes' position this year and we may need to find him a new home, which would be practically the same as one of the above players retiring. By the end of 2014, all of the above, besides Enright, would be odds on to be done and Boris would be no certainty to continue on past then, either (just to give us another recent retiree on 270-290 games, for shits and giggles).
