Hilarious? You have one odd sense of humor.
The average person cam grown till they are in there mid 20's, i dont see why this doesnt apply for AFL players.

That's entirely untrue, so you're suggesting Sam Dwyer has grown 3cm since last year at 27 years of age?

You can't help but think the club are trying to increase the trade value of many of the smalls for the scenario we decide to move some of them on. Almost not unlike listing Paine at 194cm when he was only 191cm.

The club is either feeding the players a strong dose of human growth hormone or incorrectly listing some of the heights. I'll take the latter as being the more likely given the clubs view towards looking for arbitrary ways for the team to improve as opposed to going the Essendon route and looking for ways to cheat.

The other ridiculous thing is when the weight doesn't change from year to year when clearly some blokes are many kilos heavier, particularly the young players in their first couple of years.

What do you base the heights and weights you believe to be true, on?
What other official list do you have? Can you produce an official list?

Just to say they are wrong, doesn't make them wrong

Using the eye test and determining that Paine is shorter than Goldsack as one example often works quite well.

In looking at "updated heights" it's highly suspicious that so many sub 180cm types have all grown 2cm each. Dwyer, Martin, and J.Thomas are hardly teenagers and after years of not growing are hardly growing now.

For those who study the player heights/weights from year to year the trend is relatively easy to pick up and it's a head scratcher to look at numbers which physically are not possible if measured correctly from year to year.

So I'm right in assuming you have no official list(s) it just a matter of your guess work against an official* Champion Data list.
Then shouldn't you say that?

That's just ridiculous. A club will do their due diligence and there is no way that a club will be hoodwinked in this way.

It's a case of history suggesting that current listings are incorrect.

Using common sense should suggest a Sam Dwyer turning 28 this year did not grow 2cm over the offseason among other puzzling cases as Jonno above alluded to.

It's either a case of the listing was incorrect last year or incorrect this year.

At one point or another the listings have without question been manipulated or just simply wrongly listed.

Dwyer and Martin were fresh from the VFL so I wouldn't be surprised if the 1st year measurements were simply lifted from out-dated VFL records. Thomas growing from 176 when he was recruited to 178 would not surprise me with rounding up.

I note also that not every player of long-standing grows every year.

The discrepancy seems to relate to first year players, whether they be young or more mature. I'd suggest it is a record keeping issue.

Clubs will but none the less look at a club list and seeing a guy is 2cm taller makes you feel easier about the recruitment as extra height with those small mids and those undersized key forwards is obviously favourable and only makes the more desirable.

It depends if clubs trust the listings as closely

As a 22 year old having not grown in his since his debut season in 2010?

Strange time to grow 2cm.

I can only imagine that could only be correct if the club has failed to measure him since he was first recruited.

Again, it is the players who appear on the list as first years (mature or young) who have the question marks.

I suspect that AFL clubs take the measurements provided to them by the feeder competitions and run with that. So in this case Dwyer may have started at 177 whenever he started and in the intervening years has grown several centimetres when someone bothered to re-measure.

Is this the same Champion Data who have classed Cloke as only Above Average not Elite, and have also ranked our list as only the 10th best? They don't strike me as a mob that looks into the fine details too much.

How you rate someone is subjective, but rulers are standard.

Yes I was making the point that unless Champion Data was going around to every club with a ruler and measuring every single player, which I am pretty sure they are not, then they are just getting the stats from each club's own listings.

I don't find it at all surprising that heights would be overstated. It happens in other sports as well, NBA basketball being one that I follow fairly closely. The 6 foot and 7 foot thresholds are often critical so you will see a lot of guys listed at 6-0 or 7-0 even though they are not to give a certain perception. One exception was Tim Duncan who always had himself as 6-11, not wanting to be listed in the 7 footer club and lumped in with the other centers and big guys. He was clearly taller or as tall as many others listed at 7-0 and above.
