If anyone has nothing better to do I would appreciate if you could give me a hand in finding components for my new PC.

I've decided i'm going for:

AMD Athlon XP 2800 or 3000
160Gb Seagate HDD
512Mb RAM Kingston 3200
LiteOn DVDR/RW 8x DVD-R+

I am having trouble finding a moterboard and graphics card. I would like a motherboard that has a FSB400 and 8xAGP along with about 4 PCI slots and 6 USB ports. I was looking to spend about $150-$180 on it.

Also for my video card I would be looking at spending about 150-170 on it. I don't want anything really flash just something that can comfortable run CM for the next 4 years and can play most of the current games now well.

If anyone could suggest a model I would be grateful.

Also I was going to buy it from Computer Parts Land in Notting Hill. Is there anywhere much better to buy from?

You also want SATA on the motherboard - not necessariy for the current crop of HDDs, but that's the way things are going, and you'll miss it later if you don't get it now.

is your motherboard. www.cworld.com.au has it for $119, www.msy.com.au has it for $110.

For a video card, I'd suggest the GForce 5600XT - MSI's 128MB version retails around $170.
try www.itzcomputers.com.au

AMD Athlon XP 2800 $199
" " " 3000 $230
160Gb Seagate HDD -
512Mb RAM Kingston 3200 -
LiteOn DVDR/RW 8x DVD-R+ $138.00

if you email him about any thing else you need im sure he'l b able to get u a price

I highly recommend www.itzcomputers.com.au I bought my graphics card(Radeon 9800 Pro) from there. I went to his house cos hes only 30mins away and the card was tip top for a great price.

Also If I were you i would recommend spending more on your graphics card if you plan to play games like FarCry and Half Life 2 as the are very demanding on even the best cards.

Thanks for the advice guys.

I think I have got my motherboard sewn up though. I checked out the ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe for about $160 and it has got pretty much everything.

Graphics card is a problem though. Just really want to play Championship Manager, but I'm sure a 128Mb 9600SE would be able to run a HalfLife 2 albeit on a lesser res.

Dont get a SE they are dodgy. Get a PRO or XT. 9600XT is a good card in terms of bang for buck.

Thanks for the info cause someone else I talked to told me the same thing about the SE.

Now that I don't have to buy Windows, I'm going to get a Power Color Radeon 9600PRO 256Mb. Only $195 at CPL but I was quoted 290 at Scoptec.

I know 4 ppl who have that board..ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe and all have returned it for Abit NF7 series..includng myself.
That Asus board I recall has some serious SATA driver issues if using a Raptor drive ....and also a poorly designed SATA plug...it falls out often !!

Just my 2 cents...

Cheers

Interesting.

Refer to my above post. I may now have to rethink that. I will look into it.
