Using IPad and Smartphone in the USA. What is the best option ?

I don't want to use international roaming. What is the best option for getting net access for the IPad over in the USA ? Also for using a Samsung Galaxy phone ?

I hear that it is difficult getting a sim card once over there. Apparently I need to get a US credit card ?

Does anyone have some advice for me ?

probably a little late, but mostly depends where you will be, use wifi everywhere
many, many places offer free wifi (Starbucks, for example. There's about a billion of those)

I do not recommend using the free network, may lead the hacker trap.
