Thanks for clearing that up BS - must admit that given the difficulties presented by the light cycle at Nepean highway and the circuitous route needed to get back to HQ from the drive-thru that Maccas would have been off the agenda - did not imagine either you or Jeremy actually walking anywhere. Still, not a bad way to get the k's up in the commodore and justify the VAFA lease.

U...the only cycles we worry about here are Sue's and Kates, anything else is easy! Maccas is good as we stop of at 7Eleven next door for our daily extra large slurpie of the coke variety.

I was reading through the thread and was interested in the bit about the president of Uni Blacks paying players as I noticed on the VAFA website that the club was cleared of this rumour. As a member of a club in Brunswick, we were trying to recruit a U19 player from the country and he told us that he had been offered $500 as a sign on fee at blacks. The kid didn't know any better as he had been getting paid in the country and he thought this was standard. I think he ended up going to Uni Blues to play with mates and in a higher section but my question relates to the amount of power that the VAFA has to investigate player payments. I have repeatedly heard that the president of blacks is frustrated that the club is in lower sections as he was part of their "golden era" in A grade and he will do anything to get them back there.. Thoughts????

I think that dead horse you're flogging has bolted, so please shut the gate and mind you don't wake up that sleeping dog - he's best left lying there.

that was a very cryptic reply, scribe, but didn't really enlighten me at all as to the powers the VAFA have for the sort of behaviour I was describing. And as for "dead horse", surely the major discussion points on this thread (other than the ridiculous schoolkid rivalries that people from these schools struggle to grow out of) is that of new signings for clubs and the incentives that these signings receive...

Dear MKGS,

I apologise if my previous posting appeared somewhat cryptic. I'd just completed the SMH on-line puzzle and was in that sort of frame of mind.

To be more precise:

1. I don't know what investigative powers the VAFA have, and I don't believe anyone else on this forum would know either. Sorry I can't help there.

2. The issue of who's going to which club is of genuine interest, well to me at least.

3. However, the alleged incentives (and the legality of same) which may be offered are not. They have been discussed ad nauseam on this thread and are as infuriating to exhume from the dead as the suburban/country leagues' discussions of who gets paid what and how the clubs buy flags.

In summary - if clubs offer incentives for sign-ons etc. then they're not being detected because no sanctions have been taken for the past 10 years, save for one case with OMs. That related to a technical failure to disclose past payments, and not any alleged incentives. Some posters have come on here and made wild allegations without providing any foundation. As you are already aware, the most recent investigation against Blacks was dismissed.

Consider this: Perhaps the kid you were chasing didn't have the heart to tell your club that he wanted to play for Uni instead and chose to make up a story about a cash incentive? Frankly, if he did end up playing for Blues, he would've played in the best standard U19 competition and/or senior competition available. Seem like a pretty good reason to me.

A lot of it is just rubbish. Some dingbat will rock up to The Motel in March, will be half cut, surrounded by footballers and boozehags and start mouthing off "yeah I'm on $500 a game at (insert club), hold my drink bitch " This guy will end up on the bench in the reserves with the club chasing him for subs.

Most VAFA players play for the love of the game
Look at Marcellin: won a flag with homegrowns, always competitive since.
And Uni: No AFL players, just country blokes who would all command good money in the bush.
Trinity in 2004: No money, just good facilities, connections and kids coming from the school
Even Xavs, guys like Lynch and Beetham are all old boys of the school. I do however, draw the line at Adrian Cox and Craig Kelly.

So what if clubs find work for players? If you have the connections, good luck to you. It's when guys who have no affiliation with the school and no connection whatsoever with the VAFA rock up and strut around like they're too good for the comp that things get dodgy. Like Cox, Mckee and a few others. They never make it anyway.
Scribe2 very true in regards to you comment about Motel as I have seen some hacks carry on about getting coin where in reality clubs would give them money so they will p - off. Most blokes who make good coin (not VAFA but VFL) generally dont carry on about it but its more of a case of others carrying on about 'why does this bloke get paid this' and 'why doesn't so and so get paid more'. I'm sure there is some under the table stuff but I never heard a thing in my huge one year stint in the ammos

Gents, of course the odd player gets paid in the Ammos, always have and always will. Us purests would be naive to think otherwise. I can tell you that in my prime I knocked back several 'big money' offers as I did not believe in exchanging my love of footbal for money.Thankfully, the majority of players and clubs don't pay money, thats why a lot of clubs go up and down the grades as they can't go out carte blanche and pay players to help them stay up in a Section. Guys like Ray Wilson at Blacks would never actually pay people, I don't care what anyone says. He is a man of the highest integrity and apart from helping guys get jobs, he would never go that low.

Sorry but I have to disagree.

This "love of the game" creed that permeates the VAFA is a massive cop-out and a falsehood in my opinion.

Most VAFA players play because their lifestyles and their social lives suit the level they're comfortable with.

I don't deny that they love their club but "The game"?

If VAFA players loved the game that much there would be a greater committment to training, less holidays, not as many winter weddings and they would definitely be the strongest competition in the state.

This doesn't mean the VAFA isn't a quality comp. It is.

Thoughts? or has this been done to death.

Thanks Slitherin'.

No personal agenda here although some will be thinking that way - merely an observation.

Any chance of a day trip to Echuca in the near future?

Which club in particular do you speak of Diamond?

Guys, it's been a fantastic year on the VAFA forum. Congratulations to all posters.

Would like to know what people want to see in my new column in next year's amateur footballer weekly.

My topics would include night club shenanigans, player transfer rumours, who is busting up who's girlfriend, worst blokes, worst clubs etc.

Your thoughts and suggestions are appreciated.

Merry Xmas to you all

Correct usage of grammar and words would be an excellent start.

Style is far more important than substance. Frank Devine is a man of great sense, but has lasted because he can really write. Phillip Adams has been writing rubbish for years, but does it well. Others in the Amateur Footballer are apparently taking after the latter.

BTW, the rumour is strong that the erstwhile pundit from oldxavs.com, Mr Chips, may also be writing for the Amateur Footballer after being unceremoniously dumped from his role.

Can anybody tell me who Scott MacFlaherty is? I have hear of a Scott McPherson and Daniel Flaherty, who is this mysterious MacFlaherty character?

Does NOBSPCOCAAFC have a contingency plan to cope without you next year??

Not quite sure how you can leave your beloved club in the depths of C Grade.

Bruno Conti may have to make his way back in to the fold to cover the master VAFA strategist whilst he is O/S.

How about what the players are saying behind the coach's back?

Merry Xmas to all and a great '06.
