VAFA General Discussion

Fantastic article. He couldn’t be more correct. Claiming “Amatuer” status while attracting players via employment opportunities simply isn’t “Amatuer”.

And yes, player points system has holes everywhere.
You obviously aren’t a VAFA person.

From an outsider now looking in, I made a comment to someone at UHS the other week that the VAFA is setup the the benefit of the grammar schools. Look at Premier C for example. How do you expect UHS and Preston to compete against sides that can offer jobs, future education reductions etc. so those that complain about premier, B and C having an advantage look at those clubs further down and ask if any of them could ever make it past the bottom of premier C.

The EYE thinks that clubs like UHS, Preston, Brunswick, Kew, Oakleigh could NOT give a rats about the "disadvantage" of not being able to induce players with jobs. Those clubs should just concentrate on being as good a landing spot for women and men, girls and boys as possible. Matters little on the same day that Kew thirds celebrate a premiership compared to Uni Blues seniors compared to Marcellin Sheagles celebrations in 10 years time. The friendships are the same, the beer is the same temperature, match day glory stories just the same. Mateship is what it is about whether you win or lose.

This weekend many volunteers will trot out with whistles, flags, water bottles, scoreboard numbers and so on for their clubs. The difference in the lower grades is you raise money to keep the club afloat because you value the people within it. You don't have to pay $10,000s of dollars for coaches, players, administrators who suck clubs dry. These Premier Clubs can host season launches, host luncheons every week, get massive comparative donations just to pay the coach/player bills but the lower grades don't even have to worry about player points or ex AFL players.

THE VAFA is staging a financial comeback on the back of clubs affiliation fees. They offer a miserly $50 a game if you supply a field umpire. Every Monday the bean counting VAFA admin and finance members on the board rub their hands with glee - only 40 boundries to pay this week [we budgeted for 75] only 40 goalies this week [we budgeted for 80] heard the flu knocked over 10 fieldies [ what a saving]. One staff member suggested passing 10% of the savings back to the clubs and was almost sacked! Penalty for said staffer, polish the CEOs car.

The VAFA admin talks up having meetings. What a load of rubbish. Clubs have advisory groups. Ask your committee when have you received any minutes from these? Hard to receive when they are held back.

Want to touch on something The Military One mentioned. The biggest rort sold to the clubs [and the peddled primary reason] is that umpires don't have to photograph the team sheets and attach to the online app any more. What a wonderful way to assist our umpires. We save them 2 minutes work every Saturday. Guess what there is zero accountability for the integrity of the entire system. Now the VAFA admin have nothing to collate any more. What will we do Mondays. Coffee pong table tennis. You can just leave whoever on the team sheet because there are no records of interchange [checking mechanism for who was on the bench].

The VAFA have come up with a great idea. Let's have a club development officer to assist clubs in need. Let me know when he rings and what he has to offer beyond what you can get from the VFL regional personnel.

The VAFA will crack down on Big Footy and social media streams. I suspect they have the time, energy and money to spare to do it. What better way to try to quieten the plebs. Think someone tried this in Germany in the 1930s.
Collectively shaking in our ugg boots.

SOME VAFA JOBS ABOUT TO DIE

Can we for a moment at least be glad that quality players are choosing to play in our competition.

Old Scotch seem to still be sour that they have gone so long without an A grade premiership or even a senior premiership in any grade for such a long time.

Also, I didn't hear people bemoaning the fact that Matt Suckling has found his way to the Gunn Reserve or that returning AFL footballers who previously played at a VAFA club or their junior affiliate brought a mate or two down with them.

In fairness, Tim Shearer is right in saying that the points allocation for NAB League Players is probably too high. I know plenty of players who have played solid TAC Cup / NAB League footy who are still very raw and take time to develop as senior footballers.

Personally, I believe that if a non-junior affiliated NAB League player comes to your club, they should be a 3 point player with an extra point added if they played in a Vic Country or Vic Metro side during this period.
Suckling ffs , we have 1 player from AFL . The last 2 were Matt Robbins and Simon Buckley , both juniors and then Mal Michael whos Father and Grandfather both played for Ormond !

Ormond played with 41 points last week, your reduce the points narrative doesn’t seem to agree with your coaching staff. DE7CA10E-5546-4915-BC5F-21B58F2E815B.png

Dunno about Premier but I was chuffed to receive my first invite to a President's Luncheon, put on a nice shirt and tie and wandered in at half time to some strange looks from the folk chatting over a table with a platter of party pies and sausage rolls, some little club sandwiches and a few cans. Oh and the little pot of tomato sauce. Might be different above D3!

This whole Amateur rubbish is anachronistic going back to the 1920's. You take the jobs away, the players will go elsewhere or demand $$$. The VAFA Premier and B grade would struggle to beat the Southern League with the players that stay behind. Playing footy nowadays comes with a lot of risk, especially if you are a tradesman. I know many companies that tell their tradies that if they get injured playing footy and cannot work they will have no job. There has to be some compensation.

Since the inception of the seven divisions system, any team joining the competition has had to enter via Div.4.
Some progressed well but none have made to Premier A.
Never will.

Preston Bullants have made a serious climb up the divisions in the past few years and it has been terrific to see them progress to Premier C.

A few years ago, Kew even made it to Premier C after being in D3 not long before that, same goes for UHS-VU this year.

It is not impossible to climb divisions in this era either, but it is more difficult. I doubt we will see a rise like St Bedes from 2006-2008 again.

Not sure we had a 7th Division when Beaumaris crossed to the VAFA but they rose from the bottom to the top. Good chance they will be back in Premier next year as well. Few recent examples of clubs moving rapidly through the grades but only to slide back or move to other comps such as Werribee and Rupertswood.

Bulleen Templestowe entered the VAFA in 1974 with a Junior (Under 19) team. The following year the club played in F Section (no Reserve Team) and in 1984 were playing in A Section.

My sentiments exactly. Weve got em so use em.
Yep spare time this weekend.

I suspect this is an over reaction by the Vic gov given the lack of other cases in the community for the last week and a half. Hopefully I'm right.

Restrictions in place until Friday next week so whether or not games go ahead the week after will be a last minute decision.

Has anyone actually seen any government announcement or communicae from the VAFA that games won't go ahead? I've only seen a tweet from an ABC Journo who said no changes to local sport. Are we jumping the gun? It's important to note that, as I understand, 'public gatherings' do not include organised sport. The fact that no changes have been made to hospitality and retail (apart from mandatory masks inside) lends itself to footy continuing, with possibly more stringent COVID-safe practices.

Obviously cases may grow and the need for tighter restrictions come in place but I would be bullish about games going ahead this week.

Edit: AFL Vic Update

Well said, I think games will be okay to go ahead this week provided all new cases are linked and can be "tracked" as such.. No need to panic just yet

I can’t see any club going up getting past the bottom half of Premier C

Panic is what the Victorian government does best.

String us along throughout the week then pull the plug at 6pm on Friday.

Seen it before, we're going to see it again.
Maybe if the Feds got the vaccine out earlier we mightn't be like this . Got my jab today.

You’ll be right, it’s only Dan that likes to grandstand and make big announcements and ruin people’s day. Merlin is happy to do as little as possible to get everyone off side.

As long as Dan is recovering, Victorians are safe. But from Merlinos press conference today, the holiday is going to end very, very shortly.
