VAFA General Discussion

My lips are sealed.

Actually, they're not, I just have no idea whats going on, and no real inclination to find out. Preseason beckons in five weeks, I'm not getting involved before then :)

Pre season? Since when do goal umpires do pre season? 😂😂😂😂

I reckon goal umpires started in March when I was there in the late 1990s!

They started in March when I was last there in 2021! At least I think they did, I’ve never done a session before April in my career 😉

Old Melburnians should use their school ground not just for their training but also match-day as well. As I said before in my earlier post, Elsternwick Park/Sportscover Arena has outlived its uselfulness as a matchday venue, but it should still be the administrative HQ of the VAFA.
Slight problem down at Port Melbourne, there is no lighting for training during winter.

State election coming up in November. Perfect time to find some funding. Not to mention the coffers of past students and players. A fundraising campaign for lights through the ASF would get plenty of donations, especially tax deductible donations.

One topic that will certainly be up for discussion at VAFA AGM night would be the future of Elsternwick Park as the 'on-field' HQ of the VAFA.

Maybe what the VAFA should do is keep Elsternwick Park/Sportscover Arena as the administrative HQ (ie tribunal, board meetings etc) with the playing arena used only for VAFA umpires training, but the major on-field action (ie VAFA Premier Grand Final) based at Sandringham. In hindsight, the VAFA should've moved all major on-field events like rep matches, grand finals to Sandringham as early as 2004. You don't have to be Einstein to come to the conclusion that Elsternwick Park-like VFL Park Waverley-had long outlived its usefulness, and it didn't have the aura or the impact it once had during the 1970s and early 1980s.
Move the whole lot to Sandy ?

just received an email stating that Russell Davidson has resigned from VAFA Umpire boss.

A massive loss for the VAFA fraternity that such a brilliant mind, leader and teacher is moving to greener pastures.

All the best in your future endeavours Rusty.

Obviously the VAFA media gurus are putting a massive effort in to their write up for the C Grade grand final before posting it on the website......come on guys, give us something!

Time to publish Team of the Years as well. Ideally, these would be released at time of VAFA Awards Night.

One for the older folk here.

A list of the 1934 VAFA clubs and their home grounds.

A few clubs are still in the VAFA 88 years on and a few long-serving former clubs like Geelong Amateurs and Footscray Tech OB (later FITOB) as well.

Jack Dyer played for St Ignatius around 1929 before he was recruited to Richmond.

I couldn't see bedford's name on the Ormond team list, though ;)

Yes they seemed to have logged off on the day of VAFA Awards night and never returned.
Anyway Essendon Football Club starting to make VAFA HQ look good.

Speaking of that, read in Jon Anderson's column in the Sunday Herald Sun last week about moves at VAFA HQ to have George Voyage ousted as VAFA president and being replaced by one of the former VAFA presidents, Nick Bourke. If the VAFA AGM was live streamed, it'll be must watch viewing. The chasm between the VAFA Board and the clubs is growing larger and larger.

And Premier A and the rest

It’s pretty simple Mr Ford, only two teams per year get to play with the big boys, they need to up their game to prove that they deserve to be there.

Are there any whispers around regarding: -

Clubs moving on

Clubs wanting to join the VAFA

Amalgamations

Club name change(s)

Only what has already been reported to date.

Emmaus St. Leos in D3 will become Wattle Park Amateurs Football Club

Manningham Cobras and Yarra Old Grammarians have agreed to merge for season 2023 - Unsure of what name they will play under but I'm sure someone will be able to shed some light on this. All things being equal the merged entity will play in D2 next season.

Smart call by Emmaus St Leos to become Wattle Park, I thought maybe they could add Deakin into their name too given their proximity to that university.

FWIW how times have changed, some rough road trips by train!

Premier sectors have locked in their structure for 2023, when can we expect the divisional sectors to be announced?

Old Yarra Cobras. Nathan Monaco appointed as coach.
