Wouldn’t Glen Eira love some meaningful history .

With so many clubs having completely disappeared over the years, their collective efforts to keep elements of previous clubs alive when they would have otherwise been consigned to history is quite extraordinary. Glen Eira has a rich history which should be celebrated, not ridiculed.

Glen Huntly Football Club - Founded in 1909, this club was one of the earliest foundations that contributed to the eventual formation of Glen Eira.
Glen Huntly Amateurs - Established in 1933, this club merged with Glen Huntly FC in 1974, further solidifying the foundation of what would become Glen Eira.
CBC St Kilda Old Boys AFC - Founded in 1958, this club merged with South Caulfield FC in 1992 to form St. Kilda South Caulfield, which later merged with Glen Huntly AFC in 1999 to create the Glen Eira Saints.
South Caulfield FC - Founded in 1970, it also merged with CBC St Kilda Old Boys AFC to form St. Kilda South Caulfield before merging into Glen Eira.
Balaclava FC - Formed from a merger between AMP Society FC and North Caulfield YCW in 1982, Balaclava FC later merged with St Anthony’s Glen Huntly FC to contribute to the formation of the Glen Eira Amateur Football Club.
St Anthony’s Glen Huntly FC - This club merged with Balaclava AFC in 1991 to help create the Glen Huntly Amateur Football Club.
Monash Gryphons - Founded in 1991, this club finalized its merger with the Glen Eira Saints in 2017 to become the current entity known as the Glen Eira Gryphons.
Through these mergers and partnerships over time, particularly culminating in significant events like those in 1999 and 2017, various clubs have contributed their histories and legacies to form what is now recognized as the Glen Eira Football Club.

Prahran

Southbank Football Club which was an amalgam of the former State (Savings) Bank (of Victoria) and the Commonwealth Bank Football Clubs.

These two clubs merged to form ‘Southbank’ as the CBA, being Sydney Centric had no interest in AFL in Victoria, whereas the State Bank had been extremely supportive of its team.

However, the amalgamated bank club lost its ground, and is now Rod Laver Arena. Prahran was happy to take the Bankers in.

Assumption College in Kilmore, having left the VAFA after the 1983 season, contacted the Prahran F C and another amalgamation was born.

Assumption has had an amazing Schoolboys’ football history and their presence at Prahran could only be positive.

The College was, and hopefully still is an AFL factory : -
  • Peter McCormick, 165 games with Collimgwood
  • Luire Serifini, 146 games with Fitzroy
  • Neale Daniher, 82 games with Essendon
  • David King, 241 games with North Melbourne
  • Shane Crawford 305 games with Hawthorn
  • Ben Dixon, 203 games with Hawthorn
  • Tom Lonergan, 209 games with Geelong
I can understand why Prahran has accepted struggling/clubs with no home into their boudoir.
from 1999 - 2006 Ivanhoe AFC and Assumption combined to form Ivanhoe/Assumption Amateur Football Club. The club gained several very good players from this, had a good relationship with Father Ray Carrol and played several pre-season games against the Assumption senior school team, yet the partnership never really delivered the on field results all had hoped for. Three key elements for the challenges with the set up:

a) VAFA failed to give Assumption School Captain and ex-Melbourne Reserves player Brad Hall a permit for two full years - making him sit out of football as a 24 year old - due to him playing one year at Sturt before becoming playing Coach of the club. It significantly de-energised things and Brad played one injury interrupted season in his third as playing coach, before going to Vermont to win 3 premierships as their gun Ruck/Forward.

b) School principle at time was not overly supportive of the partnership, even though Father Ray was.

c) One of the key people of the partnership had a falling out with the committee of the time and as such started discussions with Prahran. No fault of Prahran at all - just one of those things that happened between Ivanhoe and key Assumption connection.

d) We played in lower grades and the TOP players (example - Simon Wood - a Xavier star) wanted to play at highest level possible. Fair enough.

Having been involved at the club at the time, I believe we got a bit wrong and a bit right during the partnership, but we were going through a difficult time with loss of ground for a season, limited committee and some of the above stifled what might have been. At the end of the day, you reap what you sow ..... and at that stage of our history we didn't do enough to make it work - IMHO.

Now a new name with the Old McKinnon

GE takes the ridicule particularly from the nondescript gun. But just one thing that no one cares to mention is that those clubs that have become a part of GE would have had their histories gathering dust in someone's garage. I love watching our reunion lunches. if not for us they would not exist. It's a great melting pot fighting against the hatred. Gun is obsessed closely followed by you know who.

Im not anymore PS if you take note .
I know quite a few players from those eras and played and coached against a couple . Also had a bit to do with the original Gryphons and had an involvement . So thanks for your sly dig .

My comments about the Combine is because of the underhanded way they were poaching players and not jut Ormond . Maybe the tide has turned and Ormond might have 2 19 teams and the combine might have none , under a very strange coach .

I said not in the same class as Prahran , did not say anything like the gun did , i'm trying to stay on good terms with them, as i would say im friends with a few and know the coach . So thanks for you input where you were totally wrong !
Well call out Pop gun for what it is if you don't agree. Your silence when he makes these comments condones the content in this day and age. His comments over 2/3 years as yours appear to have no end. Just let it go.

Interested in the criteria you apply to say one multi times merged club is not in the same class as another multi times merged club especially seeing you are trying to be friendly? Seems a paradox?

How is Gun Island calling out someone for being a keyboard warrior. The most gutless poster on bigfooty in history. Never helped out as a volunteer at his club Ormond, in fact not welcome there but hides behind his keyboard and pots everyone. The word pathetic comes to mind.

With due respect, if you were a shrewd BF observer you'd know much of that is wide of the mark. In fairness, you are not on your lonesome in that respect.

It's participatory frolic, so providing the poster doesn't infringe the guidelines all those who are nettled need to do is scroll or employ the ignore function.

On another matter, I see Joey continues to be active on the podcast, does anyone know what his role is at the VAFA these days?

A couple of years ago i'm sure he said his son went to McKinnon and played juniors at O, then went with the ones that left . Not sure can't be bothered looking back

To change the subject, being new to the VAFA just wondering why there are so many 3rds teams but no division 4, seems a bit weird, and does anyone know when the 3rds comp fixture will be released. Totally confused with 4 weeks or so to round 1.

Don't hold your breath waiting for a thirds fixture. The fixture was drip fed last season for the first month while teams were graded. With some clubs opting to have a large number of thirds it will be interesting to see where they all end up.

Couple that with Masala and Old Mentonians (senior teams) in the thirds competition.

Will Mentonians field one or two teams this year?

Thanks for that, seems strange that those 2 clubs are not in divisional if it’s their senior teams?
