VAFA General Discussion

St James park closed for the winter was the rumour I heard today. Long overdue resurfacing works to begin.

Not good news for the Razorbacks, especially if the pub rumours over Christmas are to be believed.

On another resurfacing note, Stradbroke Park also on the council radar this winter. Where will Xavs 24th and 25th team play this season?

TBH from a personal point of view - I would love to see the VAFA thriving. I played nearly all my footy there for many, many years and loved the comp. But what is happening now is pretty ordinary IMO.

All clubs under C grade should start a new semi-pro comp called Vic Metro - change a few things and see what they could build or join existing comps.

I think VAFA in 5-10 years will be three grades of elite school teams only. It will be outstanding football - no doubt - but will not be about the metropolitan regions it once was.

Current clubs will join semi pro comps and either survive or not. Maybe Merg?

For us we are at the start of our journey in a new comp and a lot of work to go. But we are at least relevant again - for now - and that is a start.

Once upon a time, when I was a young man, I played for the Willy CYs in the now-forgotten CYMS Football Association, which disbanded in 1977.

When I played for the CYs U18s, we played in the former Werribee District Football League, and the U19s were in the (then) Footscray District Football League.

Many football clubs and leagues have either evaporated, merged, or adopted new identities.

Many clubs leave the VAFA citing geography.

During the 1960s, most families didn’t own cars. Their sons, who were playing on the other side of town or a long way away, often took public transport. It could take well over an hour to get there, and then there was going home.

Occasionally, there was a bus, and the players needed to ask their parents for the fare.

Now that cars are abundant, distance has shrunk. Why is geography an issue?

It could be argued that Willy CYs travel further than most VAFA teams, don't consider themselves elite and geography isn't an issue.

Over reaction, or is it genuinely embarrassing that the VAFA haven’t released the divisional fixtures yet now past mid feb, given divisional structures were agreed on pre Christmas? Last years div 1-div 3 released from 24th Jan - start of feb.

Could it be that the league is worried about teams in the lower divisions potentially folding (eg Box Hill) and does not want to release a fixture just for it to be changed ?

Pure speculation

Maybe the former staff member dismissed at Xmas was working on it
Or you're making up shit because you don't like him?

Mark Stevens has been in charge of fixtures for years, yet you continue to slander a guy who left (not fired) because you don't like him.

Funny, we received an email about fixtures from Mark Stevens about fixtures yesterday, and has published everything to do with fixturing in the VAFA portal over the last couple of years.

Almost as if it's a common name and you're referring to a different preson entirely, and have no idea who is in charge of fixtures at the VAFA.

Whoever this guy is, he sucks at his job, and needs to realize D1/D2/D3 feel like having their fixtures the same time as everyone else. 10 years time the VAFA is a 3 division league due to their own incompetence

I don't disagree. Just pointing out that Stevens has been in charge of fixturing, not Christie, despite bedford's whinging.

The bloke from Ormond left the conference at half time, he wasn't there when VAFA operations did their presos and outlined their roles and responsibilities. No wonder Bedford has no idea who does what at the VAFA.

In any case D1 is out, can probably expect D2 and D3 this week or next too

SBMT deciding to not have a womans team/s for the upcoming season. Interesting post on the club FB page over the last few days.

I personally thought their program was going really well, especially with the recent success both of their sides had.
