VAFA General Discussion

Good post. I think we all would like to see the Box Hill Norths and Chadstone's thrive but this won’t happen unless things change. Unless we try something different we will never know but as referenced in your post the VAFA are not big on innovation. I have said many times that Thirds has it place but personally (and it’s just me view) I think the balance is going too far. In five years time are we happy having the VAFA as a 4 or 5 division senior/reserves comp while we have a 6 or 7 divisions of Thirds?

A 5 team division is not sustainable so to keep the lower division viable I think your suggestion that clubs with multiple Thirds teams consider playing against senior and reserves teams in D3.
FWIW I think you'd find the Premier Thirds teams would dominate if they were placed in D3.

It's now 6 and 5 with D3 on its last legs. In five years time are we happy having the VAFA as a 4 or 5 division senior/reserves comp while we have a 7 Divisions of Thirds?

As I understand it we have lost 4 clubs to divisional football this off season alone with a 5th in peril. Having a 5 team division is not ideal so keep the lower division viable I think your suggestion that clubs with multiple Thirds teams consider playing against senior and reserves teams in D3 has merit.

15 years ago we also had 3-4 Club XVIII grades.

Just checked. No Thirds as such but 3 x Club XVIII grades - Club XVIII (1) and Club XVIII North and South.
It was a completely different environment then. Circa 2010 there were a handful of players aged under 25, Clubbies was a place for the older guys to run around. There was even reading of the form guides and the odd smoke taking place at HT. Fast Forward to 2026 and the top 2-3 divisions in the thirds are dominated by players in their 20's. It's definitely social still but there is a lot more talent than there ever was in the Clubbies days. No issue with Xav's having 5 teams but they should be competing against each other if results dictate, not making a mockery of "divisions" just to keep them apart.

They are-they had two in premier and two in division one , so only their very lowest team didn't play against a xavs team . They won one flag.

Around 15 years ago Old Scotch decided they were only having one Club XV111 team so a heap of blokes left(17 from memory) and went and played at the struggling Richmond Centrals.

It was a boon for the club and saved them from folding. So it can work.

Ask the people on the NFNL forum that one.
You are sure to get negative feedback.

Had a job interview at NFNL with him once, was the weirdest interview I’ve ever done and felt like a complete waste of my time.

Remember at the time people who were playing in the league said don’t bother, it’s not a good place to be.

We will have around 5-10. It’s usually parents sponsoring their own kid.
Thanks, Max,

Parents supporting their kids is an age-old thing, I was thinking more of clubs that actively seek out members, supporters and others to sponsor a player of their choice or are allocated to them. If a player was tossing up whether to play with club ‘A’ or club ‘B’, and he/she didn’t have to find the cost of the fee, saving hundreds of dollars, it’s not hard to work out which one they would opt for. I was wondering whether that falls within the VAFA ethos, that’s all.

It has to as it's only the subs .

Yeah, who gives a shit? It's expensive enough to play the game without match payments. Doesn't matter who pays the subs.

Not everyone is a rich lad. Besides, any player that would make a big difference at senior level isn't getting lured by free subs, it's jobs etc.

Someone mentioned $900 at one club. If you’re a battler with the mortgage or a student doing casual work to get by, not having to cover that sum has some meaning. None at all if you’re monied.

You seem a bit confused.
