Another one of the greats from that golden generation has passed away, 3 time premiership player Allen Greer who was at the HoF function at the start of the year. Rooch in his Saturday column wrote about Allen Greer.

I got to meet him about 20 years ago at an Adelaide Uni Blacks past players function, and saw him a few times and had a chat at subsequent ones of the years. He coached the Blacks in Div 1 of the Amateur league in the 1960's for 8 seasons 1960-67 for 8 GF's and winning 4 flags. The club won 1968 and 69 GF as well. The club's most successful ever decade. Also had a few chats to him at Alberton since I returned to SA. Rooch is right, he was a lovely man off the park. Saw him the day of the trial against the crows and said hello but he was looking very frail.

PORT Adelaide — and SA football — is mourning the death of Magpies premiership half-back ALLEN GREER.

Known as “rugged and enterprising” on the field — and a “lovely man” off the park — Greer played 173 SANFL league games from 1946-1956 and twice represented SA in State football. In those 175 senior games, the best is often regarded as his work in the Magpies’ 1951 premiership win against North Adelaide — the start of Fos Williams’ golden era at Port Adelaide.

Greer also was a member of the 1954 premiership team that beat West Adelaide as the Magpies started their run of six consecutive flags. Greer returned to league football in 1971 to coach West Torrens for two seasons.

The Port Adelaide Football Club is mourning the passing of three-time SANFL premiership player Allen Greer who died this week aged 90.

A member of the 1951, 1954 and 1955 premiership sides, Greer played 173 games for the club in a career spanning eleven seasons between 1946 and 1956.

Greer was vice-captain of the club and was a key part of the team which won an Australian record six consecutive premierships. A life member of the Port Adelaide Football Club and the SANFL, Greer was the club’s oldest known surviving premiership player. A rugged defender wearing the number 4, Greer won the club’s 1949 Most Improved award.

A lifelong Port Adelaide supporter, Greer went on to coach West Torrens and Adelaide Uni, winning four premierships with “the Blacks”.

Club great Geof Motley played with Greer in the 1950s, went into business with him, and remained in contact with him until his passing. He described his friend as a man and a footballer who was respected just as much by other clubs as he was within the walls of Port Adelaide. “He didn’t have the skills of high hands or long kicking but he was extremely quick, just very fast over the ground as a half-back flanker,” Motley said. “They used to have some races at the end of the year and someone from each club would be represented and he always did well there.”.........

Racehorse Greer ... tearing down the flank ... enjoy the great paddock in the sky. RIP.

I remember as a little kid in the 50's Allen Greer being called racehorse by many Port supporters in the crowd when he was `tearing down the flank' with the ball in hand.

RIP Allen Greer

The thing that always made us smile was the University twats used to look down their noses at teams from the Port area but they knew where to come to get a good coach. When he was coaching Uni someone said to Allen 'when are you coming back to Alberton' ? He smiled and said. 'I never left'.

The subject of my all-time favourite Port Club moment, when his wife Betty sat down next to me (while Allen was having a sneaky press in the pokie den) and spoke of some experiences of that golden era when the club went from good to great.

RIP.
