Wow shocked by this news. The thin white duke was one of the great entertainers and innovators of his time.

Ahhh shit this sucks. One of the most important figures in music. RIP David.

I guess there will be quite a procession of deaths of these musical greats soon. The stars of the 60 and 70s will be going, many lucky to have survived the excesses of their early careers. Bowie though was probably a good 10 years earlier than he should have been if he'd been an insurance clerk.
I think if I went through my records I'd probably find eight of his albums there. Sometimes a difficult musician to be a fan of as especially after Diamond Dogs he seemed to change styles with every album. Years later that's a cause for respect and albums like Low seem mainstream. But with each new release over the years when time came to lash out with my hard-earned cash I'd wonder if this was to be the weird, never-listenable album. You never knew until you'd listened to it a few times.
It was a shameful relief for me later in his career when he'd occasionally come up with commercial singles like China Girl or did A-grade pop duets with Mick Jagger or Freddie Mercury.

There was a show late on sunday night on the ABC about the back up singers ( mostly female, and mostly Affro-American ) who supported the headline acts, eg the Stones, Sting, Mickey J, David Bowie etc etc.
Some of them had sensational voices, one in particular who has backed up the stones on apparently every tour of the U.S. since 1989, but Darlene Love was probably the only one who made it as a single artist.

There was footage of her, and others in the 1980's backing up David Bowie, and even with his 80's shoulder pads he looked extremely thin and pale.

There was no doubt about his talent though, RIP the thin white duke.

20 feet from stardom.

A great show.

Have been a fan of Bowie's since my high school days (started in '71). Diamond Dogs a real highlight for me but Life on Mars is one of my all time favourite songs.

RIP David.

PS I knew his name was David Jones and he changed it so as not to be confused with Davey Jones, from the Monkees, but didn't realise he had a hyphenated surname Hayward-Jones.

Saddened to hear of the loss of a true great. I've been listening to his songs all day (along with a couple TISM tunes... because TISM). For me it feels like losing an old friend I haven't spoken to for a while but was really important to me at some point in my life. I remember when I was at university, I would listen to Bowie non-stop.

Changes was my favorite song at the time. Probably still is.

Young Americans come close though.

RIP Mr Bowie. Thanks for the songs

Adding to what I have written in the Poo Eckert thread I'd like to say Vale David Bowie in this thread.

Aussie music lost a great in Stevie Wright just before Christmas and now the world loses Bowie. Both were born in 1947, both gone too early.

There are a lot of tributes or videos I could post here, but this one I saw on Lateline earlier this year where they interviewed Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield who sang Space Oddity when he was on the International Space Station and made a video from there. I cant think of a grander tribute to Bowie. Hadfield has updated his you tube clip posting - Rest in peace, Starman.
