I was just reading about this. Sad news indeed

I was very sad to hear the news yesterday morning when I turned on the radio for the overnight news. I heard a great interview with the owner of the North American Soccer League team Cruyff played for and how big his influence was when you had all those greats of the 1960s and 1970s go and play and to promote the game in USA after the league was set up there in 1977. He gave Cruyff massive praise for what he did away from the pitch for the game.

I dont think anyone has changed the world game like Cruyff did and his Ajax and Dutch team mates with Total Football. For a small country to make 2 consecutive away World Cup finals and had to face the host nation in 1974 and 1978 is both an amazing achievement and rotten luck. If they had played finals against Argentina in Germany in 1974 and Germany in Argentina in 1978 they probably would have had Cruyff hold up 2 World Cups.

Cruyff and the Total Football principles conceived by Ajax manager Rinus Michels is still influencing Australian Football via the National Football Curriculum. Implemented in 2009.

In that interview KT did with the boys on SEN on Wednesday they talked about being able to play a Port Adelaide style. KT said Ken is trying to do and had talked to Ange Postecoglu before the socceroos game about a particular style he is trying to achieve, but didnt think we have achieved that yet. BUT I think Rinus and Cruyff were the arcitechs and builders of a distinctive style that went from Ajax to Netherlands national team and both went and coached Barcelona and others took it around the world.

diegodcg I am assuming Cruyff's passing would have been big news in Brazil. Its hard to think of a non Brazilian intenational player who fully embraced the joga bonito concept as fiercely as Brazilians do, than what Cruyff did as player and manager.

I couldnt help but notice he is another high profile person born between 1946 and 1950 who has passed away too early over the last 6 months.

I was writing a huge reply when google chrome crashed and I lost everything. Sorry I'm just too lazy to write it all again. But to put it shortly yes he was greatly admired in Brazil and news of his death came with huge shock and great sadness. In my facebook timeline alone I saw tributes from greats such as Zico and Romario. Romario was coached by him at Barcelona and said Cruyff was the best coach he ever had. Overall I think we're all fascinated with the Clockwork Orange and how revolutionary they were.

This is a fantastic article on Cruyff's unparalleled influence in football: http://www.eurosport.co.uk/football...dern-football_sto5368491/story.shtml#uk-fb-sh

Great article.

Haha never heard that Dutch era reffered to as Clockwork Orange - removing the violence component - its an apt metaphor.
