Out of interest what was his possesion count for the night?
I think it was about 8 or 9, few smothers, I think 3 tackles.
I'm not sure how much game time he got, but he did seem to improve as the game went on.

He probably played about the equivalent of 2 quarters in total. It's hard to be accurate when players are interchanging all the time, as you don't get to see these changes on telly.

I was pleased with his stas for a first upper related to game time.

Looked the goods....but what can you really tell from his first match. He moved well though. I was a bit concerned however with his decision to try and pick up a clearly bulldozed James Begley after the Pickett incident. I wonder if he has ever heard of Neil Sasche?

van berlo - am i missing something?

a lot here are absolutely raving about this guy - as an observer not focussing on any one particular player (except perhaps francou) - van berlo certainly didnt catch my eye any more than most of the blokes out there on sunday.

hoping for your sake im wrong.

Its a first game for one of our 2005 draftees , so to most it is interesting to see how he went in the real fake stuff of WC. Same as some of your guys focussed on Ezard etc.

VB has been training the house down and a lot of us were wondering how he handled himself. Its not so much possession IMO but how a person moves and sets themselves up to be a link

You were too busy watching the phantom elbow to Damon White to notice him. :D

oh no CE didn't notice - quick delist,delist,delist ! :D

I noticed him even from the northern stand. He seemed very smooth.
I did confuse him first with Radar front on a couple of times but noticed that #7 on his back up the other end. Hope he continues to shine.

Yes very happy with the early passion shown and the niggle.

I was actually impressed with the mongrel the Crows showed, there were several incidents where a Crows player knocked a Port bloke on his arse. The standout being the Stiffy/Cornes one.

Thats the comment I made in one of my earlier posts. We exerted some physical presence that was missing last year and I found that to be one of the positives I took out of the game :)

Sorry can't agree, I thought the tackling and use of the physical approach, apart from the odd incident was one of our areas for improvement.

Neil Craig said as much in his press conference saying there were areas of our game that we hadn't put a lot of time into, such as tackling...

Too much time on skills.

i agree, 8-9 possesions is note overly inspiring. if you look hard enough you will find every player does some good smothers/shepards etc.

it was a similar problem last year with fergus watts. in his few games all you crow bigfooters were picking up a good tackle or a strong mark and laying it down as the makings of a gun.

:D :D yeah so the point being.

Yes we know most players with his stats in their second year would get a bagging, but in their first year we rave about them - whats new.

Relate those possessions, smothers and tackles to being on the ground for effectively a total of 2 x 18 minute quarters plus time-on, against the AFL premiers, and it was a lot better than "not overly inspiring", and more than respectable for an underweight 18 year old making his debut.

Cheap shot IMO.

Well said Macca, there are alot of aspects to take in before judging a player.

I saw bits and pieces of the game and Stiffy seemed be involved in all of the rough stuff. He must be given a leadership role in 2006 in my humble opinion.

In reality he was right though ;)

Sorry, don't agree. A dumb unaware on-looker might think that an 18 year old featherwight playing his first AFL game should play like Ricciuto. Taking all factors into account only a non football savvy individual would make those comments.

His debut was quite creditable, and to expect more is bloody stupidity. I saw a lot to like for the future.

Look I like Van Berlo and I think we're on a winner - but Macca realistically he was hardly noticable, and I can understand TOP's perception as an onlooker.

WE do get carried away sometimes over a handball or one kick, yet a second year player doing the same thing quite often is bagged.

Reilly for example got 18 possessions and has been bagged in certain circles
;)

Make that circle, not circles. :D

I was happy with his game as most on-lookers were. Room for improvement, but certainly a pass for the night.

Sunday was the first time vthat iv'e seen VB and because of the talk on here i kept a close eye on him, Whilst I agree that he didnt do that much, he was in position (one of the few) while he was on the field.
It is very very rare that an 18yo could step straight in but it does happen ;)
I hope he is tried on the wing within the next couple of trial games because if we continue to come out wide we badly need pace, or somebody to switch it back. * I can't belive I'm about to say this but burton switched it nicley a couple of times on Sunday, so another super fit fella on the other wing might balance things up a bit.
I keep saying how much he reminds me of Peter Motley, and either nobody ever saw him or nobody agree's.

im not saying he wont be a player but reading some of your responses, some of you seem to think he is a winner already and lining him up for 15-20games and possibly a rising star nom. all on the back of 9 possesions, 3 strong tackles and some smothers in a wizard cup match.

i just think some of you need some perpestive thats all.

as a comparision, a guy who played for us against the dockers named daniel mcconnell got 16possesions in roughly 2 quarters. he really lifted our midfield to the extent he got recognition by all media at the game and singling out by the coaching staff. incidently, nathan and daniels birthdays are 6 days apart even tho d-mac was drafted last year he was at school and was on a limited training regime.
