Vanilla should actually be a compliment as it has flavour. If a player was plain and boring the term should be like having original flavoured chips. There plain as ****.

In that context it means very plain. No special skills or standout attributes. Nothing noticeable. B grade. etc etc.

Hence why it's always used in reference to our midfield.

I actually don't mind the term, when used in context.

It's just way over-used and used to describe things that it doesn't.

Yeah it is bland uninspiring most common flavour. What I said above was just what I thought the first time I heard it used to describe something.
