It was reported on Channel 7 news tonight that Peter Vardy has quit the Adelaide Football Club.

As I understand it the Crows wanted to know what his position would be for next year, not knowing whether he wanted to stay, move to another club or just give it away all together.

I can't understand why the Crows would want to get rid of him, how are they now going to replace both Jarman and Vardy, arguably their two best small forwards? One would have thought they would have been keen to keep Vardy. Unless some big recruiting is done by Adelaide to build a forward line I can't see the Crows putting many winning scores together. My memory I think the Crows tried to get rid of him last year, only problem was that Vardy went missing so he couldn't sign the papers to change clubs, bet he wished he did now.

I know Macca is going to hate me for saying this but I would LOVE to see Vardy in a Power guernsey. He is always one player we have had to worry about when it came to playing those Showdowns. Just remember the day he kicked 7.6 against us. He is a genuine small forward and always takes a really good small defender. This year we had Tredrea, Dew, Wanganeen and Cockatoo-Collins kick over 40 goals each for us, just imagine stretching the opposition defence even more, this may also give Port the chance to release Wanganeen into defence/midfield even more without hurting our forward line.

I would prefer to have him playing for me rather than against me.

So would I

If he "actually" plays. The game you spoke of and a night game against Richmond last year are the only two games that stick in my memory.

He will be missed, no doubt about that.
Love the way he crumbs the packs with pace but bloodrushing shots at goal let him down this year:mad:

Vardy played well under Blighty, but hasn't had much success with Ayres. Could be a personality clash, but his heart hasn't been in it.

I'm pretty worried about what's happening down at Crowland. Lot's of good players rumoured to be wanting to leave.

Last year I was very optimistic about a good 2001 season, but at the moment I can't see the Crows doing much at all next year. We didn't have one player nominated for the Rising Star award, and apart from Stenglein, who did actually improve this year?

Just what is wrong with Ayres that he can't inspire players? Is it his dour personality? Maybe the Crows need someone who can have a bit of fun with the players, as well as instilling some good playing practices.

Johnson and Eccles

Rumour has it these lads want out.
Hope we keep em both, if they return to Victoria be rest assured they will hurt the Crows next year who ever they play for!!

Goodwin improved. Should win the club champion award again.

Edwards improved; well at least I thought he strung together more good games in a row than bad. Should win the club team man award.

Shirley showed promise as did Gallagher and Byrne.

I think Bode and Ladhams have got potential if they get enough match time week in week out.

And Perrie, although hes a rough diamond; has improved a smidgen but needs to use his noodle more

Biglands has had a good year and Id say he has improved; the same cannot be said for Marsh

Chuck in Bickley who has had a more consistent year and has struggled each week to come up (is what Ive been told)

McLeod will win the Brownlow so thats an improvement.

The rest would be glad the season is over

Not to worry Crow54, next year will be a good year for the club.

Vardy will be a bit of a loss, no doubt, but for whatever reason he hasn't really performed to a high level this year. In spite of this he'll still be very good trade bait and could help us come trade week.

If Vardy is not happy at Crowland then it's best he leaves, as well as anyone else. Players can't run the club and I reckon the majority of the players, almost everyone, is happy with Ayres and the hierachy. Anyone who isn't can leave and be part of trades that could improve the side. Johnson, Eccles and Vardy are good players, we should receive good players in return, possibly key forwards or defenders that may take us to the next level.

Personally, I'm not worried in the slightest, I'd rather we had a bit of a shakeup, make some key moves, and really try to improve the side for 2002. I have great faith in Gary. :) ;)

Ant may have great faith in Gary, but I still think your doomed for the next two seasons.......no forwards=no goals=no wins.

ENJOY:D ;)

I know you will be able to empathise next year when the Power fall back to where they belong.

Re: Johnson and Eccles

Scott: i said in a thread in the main board that as much as i hate Peter Vardy, i wouldnt mind him in a Power guernsey at all and hope we go after him. He would be handy for 30-40 goals a year which would leave Wanganeen to play down back most of the year again. Alberton is the sort of place that wouldnt take any $hit from him, and we could pull his head out his arse quick smart.

Topjars: i would want to make sure the rumour about Johnson is very very false. He is a top player and if he wants to leave West Lakes he is very welcome down at Alberton!! As for Eccles, i think he is overrated. Bode is totally overrated...all crows fans were jumping with joy that you got him, yet he didnt even play a game. Sure he was injured, but so was Barny French but he still won his way back into the Port side.

Jarman, Vardy, Robran, Johnson, Eccles (supposedly) and maybe Smart. Thats a lot of talent and a whole lot of games for the crows possibly left. Could Adelaide cover the loss of those 6?

Macca!

Something must have changed your mind over the last 16 days.

In the Adelaide board there was a thread 'Should we go after Bizzell?'

You replied to my post concerning my thoughts about picking up Vardy for the Port side with the following:

'If Vardy goes anywhere near Port Adelaide Im not going to renue my membership!!! We've got enough goal sneaks at the moment.'

Sorry for thinking that you wouldn't be happy with Vardy at the club.

Yeah...i changed my mind. IF Port could change his attitude i wouldnt mind him...if he is still a smatarse ****er after he gets to Alberton he can get stuffed.
Mind you we do have enough goalsneaks at the moment.

Macca there is no way the Power would go after Vardy. As you have already mentioned we already have plenty of goalsneaks. The thing about Vardy is he is a small forward and thats it, you couldn't expect him to play in the midfield and the Power has shown all year that they rotate their smaller forwards into the midfield. Anyway our forward line will improve next year, when we get Brendan Lade back so why waste our time on a guy who only performs twice a year.

But of course one of those times might be in an AFL semi-final when you'll need him, 6 goals maybe from a wing- half forward position in the wet..... ;)

I want Johnson to stay. Im not sure about Eccles, and I reckon the club aren't either:confused: If he wants to go back to Vic he may be a handy bit of a trade package

As for Bode...The few games I DID see him play he looked a goer; but I do admit Id like to see more of him
Why did Port get rid of him?

Besides Barny French probably won his way back from injury based on his height.

With clubs like Geelong/Carlton/Sydney and Adelaide lookin at Barry Hall, ready made forwards are gonna be hard to come by

:(

Cos he is no good basically. He is quick. Thats about it. The helicopter punt man. Goes missing for 90% of games. His ONLY good game with Port Adelaide was int he intra club trial when he wasnt even on our list when he got 35 touches in 1 1/2 quarters before doing a hamstring - enough to get put on our list in the pre season draft.
Other than that he doesnt do enough...thats why we got rid of him for only a draft pick, because losing him wont hurt us, and hasnt hurt us. He was part of a group of midfielders that were all better than him. He was never goign to ge a regular while fighting with Burgoyne, Francou, Stevens, Brown, Breuer, Eagleton, Carr, James, Dew, Francis, Kingsley, Lyle, Schofield. Out of the non regular midfielders we had he woulda been down the bottom too. Murray, Steinberner, M Stevens, Dickie would all be better bets than Bode.
Probably Josh Carr cementing himself in the side early last year was the nail in Bode's Port Power coffin.
