I think his efforts lately deserved a thread of its on..

His 1 percenters are just awesome, had 3 or 4 smothers, thought the goal was his smother too but anyway, has anyone noticed his step up and our rise also in the past month and a bit? He was flat for a few weeks.. I think he is showing definate captain material, all the small things are what makes him so good and a great leader for the team.

Is it just me, or is VB faster nowadays? He was never really slow but he always struck me as a kind of one-paced player that could just run all day but as of late he's had some instances where he's showed off awesome closing speed and laid brilliant tackles/kept the ball on the ground/spoiled the ball and has saved us goals because of it.

You'd think a purported captain would be in our best players more than twice in 13 rounds.

But good on him, he played well yesterday and helped get us back into the game with a neat pressure goal. Had he missed that long-ranger this thread might not have got off the keyboard.

He seems to get himself into the game more when he's being led to the ball..

What most people continue to overlook TJ, is that VB dropped back from the mid-field where a player really gets noticed onto a HBF to enable Dogga to play as a tagger in lieu of Shirley

Craig commented on this about 2 weeks ago, saying that VB had in a way sacrificed his game for the sake of the team, and he was more than happy with the way that VB had played in the backlines.

I believe it is quite clear that van Berlo is Neil Craig's first choice as the next captain, first he earlier in the week brought the future captains issue up talking up Nathan. After the game he went to great lengths to let everybody know how important his leadership was.
I know a few people were riding him about 6 weeks ago about his disposal and value to the team have you noticed how his effiency has picked up since then and clearly internally he is the clearly the leader of the younger players in the club and what a great message appointing him as captain would be to the other inter state recruits.
He has my vote.

If anyone doubts VB's leadership qualities it was the game yesterday that should put those doubts far away.

Craig challenged the team at half time and asked who was going to stand up and lead. VB was the one that rose to the challenge.

Plus I think VB needs to thank Patrick though for being instrumental in his two goals

Yeah, saw that. I was quite impressed. Thought he was composed, knowledgeable and interesting. Especially in the face of the SFS's lunacy.

He didn't have a pre-season either, so it's not surprising it has taken him a while to get going. He's been servicable off the HBF over the past few weeks but stepped up today when it mattered in the third. Really good game from him.

Yep, Id be one thats overlooked this macca...but are you telling me that this sacrificial act has impacted on his disposal?

You'd think from HBF time and space would have improved his kicking for example without the hussle and bustle of midfield clearances.

yes spot on topjars his disposal this year has been very ordinary, he had a interrupted lead up to the season which seems to have hurt him more than it would more talented players.

Good little player. If onfield presence/impact is the main requirement, this year he wouldn't be in the top 5 as far as genuine captaincy choices goes.

to be fair his early season injury has had a huge impact on his early season form

The age of your captain needing to be your best player is long gone. You need your captain to have consistency, leadership capabilities, and a proven record of being able to stand up when the pressure is on, but he needn't be "top tier".

Someone like Harley is a perfect example of a modern day captain. Not elite by any stretch of the imagination, but solid as a rock, always does his job, and marshalls his troops. VB could be that for us.

Two players who come to mind who are not top teir but are good leaders of their teams are Tom Harley and Nick Maxwell. Harley is a premiership captain, and both of them are solid enough that they're always in the starting 18. They never give up and always lead by example. VB is at least as good as these two players in all of these aspects, except his peak on-field performances are more damaging than the peak performances of the two players I used as an example.

I tend to agree. He definately has some fine leadership qualities.His interview on the footy show yesterday was very good. Spoke fluently and confidently even showed a sense of humour.
I dont think you have to be the best player to be a good captain. Bicks was probably the best captain the club has had.

There's a lot of criticism over Maxwell, and I think he was a poor decision, but you severely underrate Harley. Harley is AA, he is a very bloody good player. He is top tier.

I was hoping that Goody would hand the captaincy over this year but if VB is the likely successor lets give him another year to see if he deserves it. If VB is the man then lets see how he goes in 2010 before we make him our next captain.

Based on 2009 form to date, VB doesn't deserve the captaincy. Thomson is my preference. He shows all the onfield attributes of a good leader. I don't believe VB is playing the sort of football that would inspire his teammates, last week excluded.
