Train? Draft players who are natural forwards? Not allow players to snap goals from set shots 20m out directly in front. Every player should have a routine from all angles, in front is a set shot 100% of the time. Repetition.
Agree with everything you're saying, but I don't think our coaches are telling them to take these ridiculous shots in games. Training shows most of them kicking regular set shots but in games a lot of them revert to snaps.

Agree. But there needs to be a buy in from the group that it can't and will never be done by any player. If they aren't getting called out for it which I can only assume they aren't given it happens most weeks then whats the point training regular drop punt set shots? You train how you play, if they are taking set shots at training and snaps in the game thats on the coaching staff IMO.

Some other important benchmarks below for context (these are per game averages btw)...

Notes:
  • Ross Lyon never had a team in the top 8 for marks i50.
  • We reached a Grand Final with the 4th lowest average i50s, and were minor premiers with 5th worst. There's "defence first" and then there's "defence or bust".
  • The tackle i50 numbers are damning. 4 out of last 5 years we've been dead last. How is that possible with so many short people on our list?

Purely a guess but I’d say our 3 main fwds of that time Tabs , Lobb and Walters would be well below average with comparable players for tackles i50

They do train it. It can help, but shifting it is a complicated thing, and often not simple.

What you do see with Treacy's technique is he aligns himself with where he wants to kick it and then proceeds to keep his eyes fixated on the ball all the way onto his boot (this allows slight adjustments to any of the multiple variations that may occur in a tense kicking situation/action). You watch the guys who have more randomness with their set shots and they're staring at the goals instead of the ball (saw this with Fyfe on his set shots and Sonny on the weekend with his miss). It can be a comfort thing and ingrained habit that can be hard to shift once entrenched.

Interesting stats to look at.

Just had a look at the tackles i50. The top 15 in the comp average 1.5 per match or better. Our best is Josh Treacy with 1.17 per match. This man should get a long contract. Heavens knows what our small forwards are doing with themselves.

They are never where the ball is when it hits the ground. It's why they don't kick goals and why they can't apply pressure.

I am 100% convinced that our forward entries are 90% of our problem (not including **** goal kicking and the midfield not being arsed to chase). We don't give our forwards (tall or small) good looks and because of this it is way to easy to exit our D50.

It would be interesting to see a stat of tackles by forwards not in the forward 50 though, to get the complete picture.
I'm not making excuses for our small forwards individually but it does seem a deliberate strategy to try and set our line of defence further back than most teams. We don't forward press much so we don't lock the ball inside 50, we tend to try and hold the opposition up in the midfield and have the forwards track back to try and help that.
I think we're worried about our lack of speed in the backline, and getting caught out too often out the back if we defend too high.

You're right (I think). Total tackles for our forwards - Switta 3.33, Trav 2.58, Shooter 2.55, Mitch 2.25, Sonny 2.20, Josh 1.83.

Beau McCreery (Collingwood) has most tackles i50 2.9, total tackles 4.7, second for i50 tackles Cody Weightman 2.0, total tackles 3.0, third for i50 tackles Kysaiah Pickett 1.75, total tackles 3.8. So the first 2 get more tackles i50 than outside, our smalls get their more outside.

Almost as if when the wheel turns we will be one of the most dangerous teams forward of centre, almost like the wce model some fella conjured years ago [emoji848]
