If you believe the BS then Richmond defending premier, will get Lynch and probably still keep their 1st rounder.
Hawthorn will get Shiel, Collingwood get May.
The two top 6 interstate teams are West Coast who lose Gaff & GWS Shiel.
If this happens then the 8 interstate clubs may as well form their own comp.... Free agency is and will kill it

It's what should happen
2 Conferences
Then at the end we play a Superbowl at a neutral venue
I don’t think 2 conferences is required, but the AFL was set up stupidly. Victoria should have 3 teams. Geelong, and potentially 2 teams in Melbourne based on the population. 2 teams in Adelaide, 2 teams in Perth, 2 in Sydney, Gold Coast, Brisbane, Tasmania, Canberra and Darwin. Having 10/18 teams in one state is ridiculous - you’ll never see an American or even European sport do something like that. NYC for example has almost 9million people and yet they only host one team for each sport.

Majority of players aren’t going to request to go home to Melbourne if they don’t have the option. Any mid tier player can request a trade to Victoria because of how many teams there are but with 3 it would mean the teams in Victoria are much less likely to be able to poach all the Victorian guys and a player like Prestia for example, who is good without being great, would probably learn to stick it out. The majority of Melbourne based sides should have been moved back to the VFL when they decided to turn it into a national league

Pretty cut throat approach.
If setting up a league from scratch that’s how you do it.

However, pretty tough to cut 3-4 of Essendon, hawthorn, Richmond, Melbourne, carlton, Collingwood!

Plus St Kilda, bulldogs, north Melbourne.

There’d almost be more fans following the vfl than the afl.

Obviously not financially viable.

Not really, when you consider what the AUSTRALIAN football league has become.
How in a NATIONAL level sport can you have 9 teams in once city, none in 3 states or territories (NT, ACT and Tasmania) all of which are both AFL following states or territories and have the population to support a team.

the majority should be in the VFL, that's where they were designed and created.

I see potential value in 4 Melbourne teams - North Melbourne, West Melbourne, South Melbourne, and East Melbourne each with a genuine, defined zone of supporters and influence.

Having 'Suburbs of Melbourne' teams in a national level comp is a joke. That's state-level setup.

There are effectively less than 8 teams in Melbourne now.

For purely monetary reasons,

Bulldogs play 2 home games in Ballarat.
Hawks play 4 home games in Tassie.
Kangas play 4 home games in Tassie.
Demons play 2 home games in the NT.

Not even the sporting capital of the world can sustain 9 teams.

There are good reasons why the league tried to merge some teams and tried to move others.

Still, the media based in the city of Melbourne will keep going on about the 'failure' on the Gold Coast and the player drain at the GWS. Preach to the one-eyed audience.

Let's not go overboard.

NT, ACT and Tas cannot sustain a full time club and don't have the growth numbers to support one in the future.
Without knowing as much about Tasmania or NT, can guarantee you Canberra could definitely support a team. Both rugby teams Raiders and Brumbies have over 20'000 members, the population is growing quickly, majority of people are really keen on AFL football but don't have a lot of access to seeing games without the GWS games in Manuka. The population is 2X that of Geelong also

You have to hand it to Eddie McGuire. He comes out whinging about the 6 day break, but now he has an 8 day break until the Grand Final, while the winner of tomorrow's Prelim has to travel with a day less to prepare. Man I hope the Dees win tomorrow because watching Collingwood lose Grand Finals is a National pastime.

While I agree that there are too many teams in Melbourne, your comment about NYC isn't accurate. For starters, in the NFL - America's biggest sport - there are no teams in NYC. However, there are two franchises called New York - the Jets and the Giants - but they play in New Jersey. Buffalo is also in New York State. There are 4 teams in California, 3 teams in Florida, 2 teams in Pennsylvania, 2 teams in Maryland, 2 teams in Ohio, 2 teams in Texas - overall only 8 teams in the Western 21 States and 24 teams in the 29 Eastern States.
The English Premier League is also extremely congested, more than the AFL, with teams wedged into London, half the teams within an hour of Manchester and Liverpool with the another 9 clubs surrounding Birmingham. The English Super League is like the NRL, with all teams bar 1 (in France) lined across the North from Hull to Wigan.

In 2016, the Western Bulldogs took advantage of the Finals Bye round to firstly defeat the WEagles in Perth, then beat the Hawks "away" at the MCG, then beat GWS in Blacktown in front of the smallest Preliminary Final crowd in VFL/AFL history, before playing the Grand Final in Melbourne against the Minor Premiers, Sydney. Both sides that won the Qualifying Finals were knocked out in the Preliminary Finals. First time Premiers from 7th spot.

In 2017, the Top 4 teams made it to the Preliminary finals, with the teams winning the Qualifying Finals also winning through to the Grand Final. However, 2nd place Geelong was forced to play its "home" final at the MCG, which gave 3rd place Richmond home ground advantage. The Minor Premiers were Adelaide, but they also had to play Richmond at the G.

In 2018, the Bye Week before the Finals has come back to haunt Richmond, which is the 3rd team in the past 5 prelims to lose despite having 2 bye weeks in the finals. Collingwood, first up losers in Perth, have now won their 2nd Final in a row at their home ground and will play next week's Grand Final with home ground advantage. Collingwood are also the 3rd team to make the Grand Final after losing a final out of 5 over the past 3 years since the Finals Bye week was introduced.

If the Demons win tomorrow, that will mean 66% of teams with 2 bye weeks in finals have lost in prelims and 66% of Grand Finalists have made it despite having to play all 4 weeks of finals. It will be 50% for both if the WEagles in, but I still find that a high percentage. Richmond are the 5th Minor Premier in a row not to win the Grand Final. 19 out of the last 30 Minor Premiers did not go on to win the Grand Final and 7 of those didn't even make the GF.

Thanks to Facebook memories for the sad reminder.
8 years today since the announcement that Gaz was coming to the gold coast... We all know how that worked out.
I have a permanent reminder of the Suns first ever victory against Port Adelaide, April 23rd 2011. It was a 5 day long weekend because Easter was late and ran up until ANZAC Day. The missus and I headed out to a Bed'n'brekkie in the bush with a bottle of honey bourbon. Without going into specifics of what happened after watching the game, my daughter was born exactly 9 months later!

Sounds romantic.

Sounds something like what happened to me during the third quarter of the 2001 Grand Final. Was a very happy ending :)

"If it bleeds, we can kill it." Sounds like your interpretation on Lethal's advice was more liberal.
