An unbreakable Bond behind Freo’s revival

Despite a public persona akin to that of a secret agent, a one-time Fremantle discard has reinvented himself as a key plank in the club's rise.
The name's Bond. Chris Bond. One of the AFL's true survivors.
Forced to leave Carlton in 1992 because of a lack of playing opportunity, traded by Richmond in 1997, sacked as Fremantle captain two years later and then overlooked for two senior coaching positions, Bond has never let disappointment determine his destiny.

I had the pleasure of meeting Bondy a couple of times when I was going to the gym down at Freo Oval.

I was loitering around the reception area getting my breath back and he walked up, complimented me on my work-out (despite that fact that I was probably the least fit person there) and gave me some positive words of encouragement. He didn't need to talk to me at all and it wouldn't have been rude had he walked past and said nothing. I was genuinely stoked that he took the time to say hello and give me some advice.

I was quite taken by what a genuinely nice bloke he is and every time I wish nothing but failure and bad luck on your club, I think of Bondy and feel a little bit guilty.

In early 2008 we had a shocking list that managed lose 5 games in a row after leading at 3/4 time and it looked like we were in for years of pain with compromised drafts on the horizon and so many players pushing 30. To go from that to winning a final in just over 2 years is a fantastic achievement from everyone at the club but in particular Bondy.

It is a very good article indeed.

Great to have him doing the hard yards, as usual in the back room.

Just finished reading the article. Provides an interesting window into the background of Bond.
Surely couldn't be flying under the radar though...
He is a 'must have' member of Fero's footy department.

I'd say so. He along with the others already poached would be in the sights of some of the other (especially rich) clubs. Lloyd would be high on opposition's hit lists too. We've already lost Scott and Wallis - our success may fly under the radar to the myopic Vic media, but not to the broader professional world of the AFL.

Are we not one of the 'rich' clubs? I thought we were or were at least provided with a surplus of budget to actively and competitively build a competitive football department. Otherwise, what's the whole point....

Good article. Always liked Bond and was pretty pissed when he got the chop. Glad he's with us.

What does Peter Mann do these days?

Yea we are these days, I didn't so much mean that we are going to be 'out-bided' if it came to that. Just making the general point that other clubs would be looking at us, in fact they already have, in terms of getting that off field list management right and they'll happily pick at our footy dept. We need to look after those guys that's all.
