Forgive me if this has been done, but just looking to get a clear indication of our veteran's list for next year and future years.

As I understand for a player to be placed on the list they have to have served 10 years at the club and turn 30 by September of the year they are put on the list. Also if a club has 2 veteran listed players only half their salaries count towards the salary cap. If the team has 3 a third of their salaries are removed from the cap, and so forth.

My questions are:

By the look of it, next year only Ben Johnson qualifies as a veteran for us. I assume last year Leon Davis was our only listed player? With only one player on the list is the maximum salary exempt from the cap still only 1/2 the contract or the full contract?

Also, does the 10 years service to the club have to be concurrent? As Tarrant has served 10 years at the club, but broken up into 2 separate periods.

In terms of salary cap pressure and the veterans list easing that, next year may not be that great but with Didak and Maxwell qualifying for the veteran's list in 2013 and Swan in 2014, plus possible retirements from the likes of Johnson/Jolly/Tarrant either next year or 2013, I think we are well placed to retain the majority of our stars in the near future.

Cheers guys. If, in 2-3 years time, we have 4+ guys on the list and claiming $400-500k outside the cap that's equal to what a star would be earning so pretty good news.

Bren, you must be telepathic or something, because the AFL just released the official veterans list for 2012.

This off twitter;

AFL_PKeane Patrick Keane

Veteran list players for 2012, in club order, are: M Doughty. S Black, J Brown. B Johnson, C Tarrant. Carlton - nil. D Fletcher, D Hille.

So, it seems we only have BJ and Taz next year, I could have sworn we were going to have more, but maybe I was including Leon.

BJ, Taz & Dids all qualify for VL in 2012.

As the new CBA has yet to be finalised we dont yet know how much each club can put into the VL.

Edit: Dids is only 28 so does not qualify. Oops

I'm still unsure whether this new rule helps us or works against us.

I think it will only benefit if we have 3, 4 or 5 vets (giving us up to $500,000 relief on salary cap - not sure if there will be a cap on the number of vets?).
2012 - we get 50% relief off BJ & Tarrant (giving us approx $225-250,000??).
If new rules applied (in 2012) then we wud have 3 x $100,000 (BJ, Tarrant, Dids).
If we had 2 high paid vets (under existing system), then we wud be better off.
So it boils down to: are your vets highly paid & how many vets qualify (under new system from 2013).
It's a can of worms.

If the rules change to $100,000 per player with 10 years service (no 30+ rule) I think we will benefit in a few years time with Johnson, Tarrant, Maxwell, Dids, Swan, Shaw, Cloke, O'Brien, etc all eligible. All though a few of those probably retired. But still, by 2014 we may have as many as 5+ on there.

New VL rules will stop clubs heavily back-ending contracts on their ageing superstars. You can imagine how much a Simon Black or a Pavlich is on and only $100K salary cap relief will be a major pain to some clubs.

The other aspect is that it will allow a club to bolster the pay of an ageing superstar by $100K off the books to counter free agency offers from other clubs.

I was under the impression that the 30 year benchmark was being scrapped in line with the new teams entering the competition, as a way to help clubs hold onto their stars in the face of big wage bribes.

And on the cap relief I thought it was 50% for 1-2 players listed, thereafter it goes 33% for 3 players, 25% for 4 players. I think once it gets past 5 a club can get 100k per player.

The 30 year old requirement ceases when free agency comes in for the 2013 season. The new vets rules apply for 2013 onwards and appears to be unlimited players provided they've played 10 years at the same club.

The actual $$ amount of the allowance has yet to be confirmed but has been guessed at $100,000 by The Age.
