After 2002, when Geelong won the VFL flag, the VFL were proposing to bring in a new rule regarding AFL players qualifying for finals after Geelong had a host of players who played AFL football in 2002 but qualified for the finals. I think the qualification was six games.

What's the exact rule now?

I think the requirement is still a minimum 6 games, but you are only allowed to play a certain amount of AFL players in finals.
It changes as well depending on if your AFL team is still in the finals and how your alignment works. We might be different as the VFL team is virtually a typical reserves team, while all the other clubs are seperate from the AFL clubs.
But I don't think I have done a very good job answering your question so someone who knows the rules please correct me.

They explained it on the VFL coverage and it was too long winded for me to recite with 100% certainty.

Basically they had to play X amount of games in the VFL, I think it was quite lenient and around the six mark so players that had spent a lot of the season injured were still eligible, and players were ineligible if they had played X amount of games in the AFL which I might have been 10.

The commentators said that Geelong expect to have about a dozen senior players eligible.

A player must play 6 or more games in the VFL and fewer than 12 games in the AFL to be eligible.

The first week of the VFL finals however is open slather as it corresponds with Round 22 of the AFL season, so anyone is eligible for the first week of the finals.

I worked it out yesterday during the crapfest AFL game as to who is likely to be eligible for VFL finals :

N Ablett
Batchelor
Blake
Byrnes
Gamble
Gardiner
S Hunt
Grima
Koula
Lonergan
McCarthy
Owen
Playfair
Prismall
Sheringham
Slade
Spencer
Varcoe
West
James Byrne
There maybe a couple of other top-ups eligible

These players maybe eligible, depending on how many more senior games they play this year :
S Johnson [10 senior games in 2006]
Mackie [10]
Stokes [8]
Wojcinski [10]
Kingsley [8]
