Collingwood’s VFL side had its first practice match of the season against the Coburg Tigers at Gosch’s Paddock on Saturday 28 February.

The Magpies fielded 15 AFL listed players including the return of lively forward Brad Dick, who missed the entire 2008 season with a knee injury sustained in the preseason competition.

Dick contributed one of his side’s 15 goals in a 63-point thrashing of the Tigers, 15.14 (104) to 6.5 (41).

Head coach Gavin Brown sat down with collingwoodfc.com.au after the match to give his thoughts on the game and how the AFL listed players played.

“I thought it was a really good hit out”, Brown told collingwoodfc.com.au.

“There were some really encouraging signs. A lot of the players from last year have really improved significantly and some of the new boys were really pleasing to see. Some of the ball movement and passage of play was tremendous.”

AFL listed players and comments by head coach Gavin Brown.

6. Tyson Goldsack (6k, 6h, 2m, 1t): Tyson played centre half-back on Graham Polak and moved really well. He looked to be back to his sharpest. His third man over-the-top play to help his teammates was terrific.

21. Sharrod Wellingham (8k, 12h, 5m, 3t): He got a bit of the ball and wasted a little bit of it by hand. Did some really good things but needs to work on his ball usage by hand.

22. Steele Sidebottom (5k, 9h, 6t): I was really impressed with his defensive side of his game highlighted by his six tackles. His composure in traffic was first rate.

27. Jarrad Blight (15k, 6h, 4m, 1t): Blightly moved really well. He looks like a natural footballer the way he moves. Kicked the ball to advantage and made some good decisions. Played on the wing.

28. Danny Stanley (7k, 16h, 1m, 4t): Stanley was hard, tough and tight in the stoppages. His one touch grabs and handballs were fantastic. His hardness at the contest and the footy was first class.

31. Chris Dawes (9k, 6h, 3m, 5g, 4t): Dawes played at centre half-forward and kicked five majors. Marked really strongly, contested really well and his presence was enormous up forward.

33. Brad Dick (7k, 7h, 2m, 1g): Dick was terrific in his return. Very smart and moved laterally very well. Played half-forward for 60% of the game. I was really pleased with him.

37. Luke Rounds (8k, 4h, 2m, 1k, 1t): He played on the half-back flank and did some really nice things. Didn’t get a lot of the ball but showed some really good quality things.

38. Scott Reed (6k, 6h, 1m, 2t): Showed some terrific awareness down back. Read the game really well and had some wonderful intercepts. His attack on the man and the ball was really good.

40. Chris Bryan (11k, 7h, 2m, 1t): The Bear was excellent. It was one of the best games I have ever seen him play. His aerial work was terrific and he dominated in the ruck.

43. Jaxson Barham (11k, 7h, 2m, 1t): I thought Jaxson was terrific. His run to break the lines from the wing was exceptional. At times he kicked long when shorter was a better option but his run and carry was great.

44. Lachlan Keeffe
(7k, 4h, 1m, 2g, 1t): Played in the ruck and full-forward. He is a totally different player to as he was last year. Confident, composed, and really competitive. He looked like he belonged out there.

45. Toby Thoolen (3k, 3h, 2m, 2g, 3t): Toby played at full back and centre half-back and his intensity and urgency to the ball was fantastic. He has stepped up from last year.

46. Tristan Francis (7k, 1h, 2m, 3t): Played at half-back and a little bit in the middle later on. Played on Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls and did a really good job on him. Francis was hard at the ball and very competitive.

47. Jarryd Blair (5k, 9h, 1m, 2t): Played a solid game and very productive around the stoppages.

Really can't see Stanley missing out against the Dons this week, and also think Barham is a good chance as well.

Dawes may be a good selection as well, as we need another tall against Essendon's tall forwardline. Either Dawes could go back, or Dawes could go forward and push Reid back. It is good having blokes who can play at either end...

Thanks Mate.

Dawes Should Play after 5 Goal Haul. Steele sounds good in Traffic. Agree with Blight comments.

Just play him in the fuggen guts!

None of this half back / half forward rubbish. Let him do what it is he does. Malthouse never player O'Bree off a HFF, so I dunno why he needs to ease Stanners in via the flanks!

Good to see Dawes do well. Sounds like he doesn't have an injury. He just needs some confidence in the AFL. hope he plays in the Dons game, hell be up against some good defense he needs to perform.

Stanley should be playing and i imagine Bryan would play considering Woods performance.

Its good to see a few of these boys putting pressure on the First 22.

Yes he did Figgy, during 03 Obree was played a forward pocket/HFF he wasnt great but he was played there.

i remember cursing the fact we are using a clearance mid in teh forwardline as a waste of time and talent

Well Dawes does look a Class above in the VFL - Counting last year he has kicked 10 Goals in 2 games.

I think Steele might get in ahead of Stanley and Going from the Report Bryan most likely will come in for Wood, Those I think Wood had a Really good last quarter against the Tigers

I'd bring both Sidebottom and Stanley in for this week and I'd like Goldsack to be given a run also, especially with the tall forwards Essendon have at their disposal. He looks like he would be a good match-up for a Neagle or Gumbleton type.

I'd be tempted to play Dawes and Rusling as well but I think it will depend on Medhurst's availability.

Rusling did not play on Saturday so I doubt he would play on Friday

Don't see that would make much difference Dave. If he is fit and back in normal training as we believe then he could just as easily play a half on Friday as a VFL proactice match.

He played in the intra-club at training the other day according to Optimax so he should be right to go.

Well I did not know that he played in the Intra-Club Match. So he Might play but I would not be 100% Sure

he did indeed, albeit very badly at full back but he did play

Does anyone else think something funny is going on with the fact that Browny said Dawes played CHF all day and marked well but then in the stats it says he only took 3 marks???

the stats also say he kicked 5 goals Shawthing, so he either became an excellent crumber somewhere along the line, or our forwards get quite alot of free kicks in the VFL the polar opposite to their AFL counterparts

It sounds as if Brown has made careful note of the concerns expressed here about players like Thoolen, Stanley, Dawes and Dick, and tried to address them in that report. Sounds like a team of potential champions.

Which list is Scott Reed on?
Reed is on the Rookie List

I was thinking more along the line of a stats stuff up but you maybe right. Out of intrest who played on him does anyone know????

He is a rookie snag, a NSW rookie in fact

No, he is not a NSW rookie anymore, he is now just a rookie, and possesses all the limitations and privelidges of ordinary rookies. He just happens to have come onto the rookie list from the NSW scholarship program.

This is not to be confused with the 7 other NSW scholarship holders we have, whose status on our list is very different.

No i meant is he doesnt actually take up a rookie spot, that is why we were able to take him with our last pick in the rookie draft (well second last keefe was last). As of next year though he will take up a a full rookie spot on our list.

The article is the the FMW08 thread

Thanks mate, didn't realise he didn't take up a "traditional" rookie spot.

Cheers.

Not really sure but in the 2nd Half just about everyone went to him when we went forward

I'm not sure the stats were completely correct. He did take some good marks , but kicked a few goals from free kicks.
Jayden Post played on him in the second half and did quite a good job in subduing his influence.
