OK, I know it's a long way away, but time to start thinking about it.

Last year we had a couple of SANFL and WAFL posters do a preview of the match, run down of the players, because most WAFL players aren't that well know tbh:p, just to get some more information out to those interested and more interest in the game.

Unfortunately we don't have a Lewis Jetta to unleash on you this year, although maybe Jack Darling will be able to play?

Anyway, back to the point of my thread, as we get closer to the game, ie 3-4 months time, I'll see if we can get some scintillating repartee going between the Sandgropers and Vics!:thumbsu:

Cheers

The VFL is still a couple of weeks away from making a start, so realistically, the squad will probably be picked by around Round 5,

There will probably be more discussion on this game on vflfooty.com once the H&A season commences.

SHould be a pretty close game althought i just think we will have far to much options up foward with the likes of B Le cras C JOnes, Richo i think vics will put up a pretty good side just will like more options then the might of the Western Australian team

Does anyone know whether Brandon Matera and David Swallow qualify to play for the VFL, given they are playing with the Gold Coast ?

I'm not sure they would be selected, but it would be very annoying to the WAFL if they were ....

Any AFL or rookie listed player is ineligble for VFL selection. This would include Matera as he is one of the dozen 17 year olds on an AFL contract. Swallow is an interesting one as he is not contracted to the Gold Coast but its obvious they intend on drafting him as they have stated its the reason they wanted him this year.

Therefore he is probably eligible for the VFL but I suspect if he plays the game it will be for WA.

Sorry guys, meant to get a team list or something up here sooner, but that little thing called work is getting in my way.

Gotta disappear now but will try and get something of a write up on the match and WA team over the weekend.

Look forward to this and good luck Big V.

Here are the squads, as of last week. The VFL had about 40 listed, which was an initial training squad, so may well have trimmed by now:

WAFL SQUAD: Luke Blackwell, Ryan Brabazon, Andrew Foster, Chad Jones, Ian Richardson, Ryley Dunn, Michael Warren, Rob Young, Dean Cadwallader, Aaron Sweet, Luke Webster, Ross Young, Andrew McCarrey, Sam Hunt, Toby McGrath, Nathan Phillips, Shaun Hildebrandt, Kyal Horsley, Michael Rix, Tallan Ames, Andrew Krakouer, Tom Roach, Josh Roberts, Brent LeCras, Jason Salecic, Andrew Strijk*, Anthony Tsalikis.

VFL SQUAD: Jason Cloke, Stewart Crameri*, Marcus Marigliani*, Trent Shinners, Luke Breust*, Ed Curnow, Sam Gibson, Cameron Pedersen, Danny Nicholls, James Wall, Nicholas Carnell, Samuel Power, Justin Kahlefeidt, Jarryd Blair*, Kris Pendlebury, Russell Gabriel, Michael Hibberd, Matthew Firman, Ben Johnson*, Ben Raidme, Jonathan Simpkin, Stephen Clifton, Shaune Moloney, Myles Sewell, Orren Stephenson, Matt Tyler, Ash Arrowsmith, Adam Iacobucci, Jarrod McCorkell, Adam Bentick, Stephen Brewer, Jarrod Dalton, Toby Pinwill, Sam Pleming, Callum Sinclair, Chris Irving, James Magner, Nick Sautner, Shane Tregear, Marty Pask, Ben Davies, Peter Faulks, Brett Johnson, Matthew Little, Patrick Rose*, David Stretton
*AFL Rookies subject to availability

Looks like WA have gone a smaller, quicker side, with Chad Jones, Michael Warren, Robert Young, Sam Hunt, Michael Rix, Tallen Ames, Brent LeCras being the talls. The rest I would consider flankers/running players.

HFF07, do you mind if I grad your "anticipated" team for the WAFL board?

Cheers

Im a bit suprised that Rix from Subi got chosen hasent really played that well this season. On the other side I would of thought Blake Broudhurst could consider himself unlucky. For you Victorian Supportors the weather in Wa this weekend is going to be very bad with low temps and possible thunderstorms. Expecting 25mm of rain so there may be some late changes.

From some of the stuff on the Pies website it seems Jarryd Blair on our rookie list is going to play for the Vics.

He's a tiny pocket rocket who plays in the guts, very good at clearances, quick enough given his small stocky build and good skills/decision making.

I'd love to see him get a crack at AFL level this year or next but I doubt he will as he is so short (Boomer Harvey would have him well covered).

Don't forget about Kris Pendlebury too, has been a top defender for the pies at VFL level for a few years now, and should be a player considered for a mature aged rookie spot next year. He is only a Collingwood VFL listed player, but I would back him to be listed over the next few years by one of the new AFL clubs, or a struggling club.

And yes, he is Scott's brother.

Blair will be a gun at this level, he clearly should be picked to play in the midfield.

Your right buddy, should be fine.. Be interesting to see how the Vics line up. Had your measure last time, didn't we?? :D

Ah yes, that debacle HFF. If it's wet I'd back the big V in each time, dry, fast grounds would suit the WA team, if we picked fleet footed players. Dimmer is obviously expecting a slog with the team chosen.

Thanks HFF for the team. :thumbsu:

Here's my thoughts on each player in the squad. It shows there are a lot of similar style players in our squad, one paced (not meant in a bad way) get a lot of the ball. The VFL watchers will know a lot of these players anyway, I would think.

Luke Blackwell, midfielder who can find plenty of the ball, not always damaging, and gets to a lot of stoppages and contests. Single paced.

Ryan Brabazon, midfielder with a bit more flair than Blackwell, still finds plenty of the ball and gets to lots of stoppages.

Andrew Foster – read the same as the previous two, can rack up the possessions also.

Chad Jones – 6’5” forward who has a very good lead, good hands and good kick, but when it hits the ground…..

Michael Warren – playing CHF/B but plays as a tall utility. Good competitor.

Rob Young – another tall utility who will likely play as a backup ruck as well, but been good coming from defence from what I have seen this year.

Aaron Sweet – midfielder/flanker who is quick and takes the game on. Some have queried his kicking but it hasn’t been bad from what I have seen. A bit of flair here.

Luke Webster – playing very good, solid defence this year, and on some bigger bodies, uses the ball well from defence.

Ross Young – another midfielder who can find plenty of the ball and rack up the possessions and can sometimes burn it. Left Footer.

Andrew McCarrey – made FB his position at Souths this year but can also get thrown forward and be very useful.

Sam Hunt – flanker who is good at distributing the ball and being third man in. Has been on the Geelong and Essendon lists, I believe.

Toby McGrath – won a Sandover, says it all really. Gets the ball and uses it well, can get it contested or out on his own.

Nathan Phillips – the revelation of the WAFL season so far for mine. Was once a selfish forward pocket, who could kick a lot of goals, now can also get the ball in the midfield a lot and lays tackles. Has pretty good pace, great evasiveness.

Shaun Hildebrandt – another of the run all day mids, although on the wing, who can get clear and rack up possies.

Kyal Horsley – lovely left foot distributing the ball from half back/midfield. Another who just runs all day.

Michael Rix – ex Saints (and Casey?) ruckman who has steadily improved since coming to the West 2 years ago. Will give a good contest and work hard around the ground.

Tallan Ames – if the FF has pace and leads, then Amesy goes to FB, otherwise he plays a flank role, IMO. Very competitive and very loud.

Andrew Krakouer – dynamite small forward who can also turn the game on it’s head when he goes to the middle. Saturday will be a big test.

Tom Roach – you’ve all seen him, pacey and takes the game on, sometimes to his detriment, but he won’t die wondering. Been great on the big WA grounds.

Josh Roberts – the anvil, rock solid in the contest, loves the contest and is also good overhead.

Brent LeCras, spent time on North Melbourne’s list and is a good key forward. Won the Simpson for WA against SA last year, but can go missing in games.

Jason Salecic – another midfielder who runs all day and loves to go forward and kick goals, but also likes the contest, like Roberts.

Andrew Strijk – beautiful distributor of the ball from the half back line and through the midfield. Been in strong WAFL form.

Anthony Tsalikis – X factor personified, can kick 5 or 6 and win you the game or not be seen. Works harder these days and stays in the game.
