Fall Out Boy

Great performance from the boys, with both Matty Elliott (116*) and Brad Hodge (105) racking up centuries.

In the process they smashed the former Victorian record for a 2nd wicket partnership (was 129, now is 222).

Well done boys.

Gee they are a hard team to predict :)

why did you need to do the math? if you don't win within 40 overs, you don't get the bonus point. if the vics got the runs 1 ball into the 41st over, using your equation:

(236 / 40.1) / (235 / 50) = 1.25011 > 1.25

doesn't mean we get the bonus point though. would make it interesting though if the first ball of the 41st was a noball hit for 4. technically it's still a win in 40 overs.

baggygreen is reporting that the vics scored 232/2. i think that should read 237/2

40.4 Jurgensen to Elliott, FOUR, short and pulled out to the mid wicket
boundary and that is a comfortable win for Victoria
40.3 Jurgensen to McDonald, one run, pushed to mid on
40.2 Jurgensen to McDonald, no run, forward defensive
40.1 Jurgensen to McDonald, no run, forward defensive

End of over 40 (9 runs) Victoria 232/2 (RR: 5.80 RRR: 4/10 = 0.40)

The 40 over target is often mentioned, but...

The playing conditions state that The team that wins the match and achieves a run rate of 1.25 that of the opposition shall be awarded one bonus point.

Taking it to the letter of the law, a win in 40.1 overs, as you've described fits that criteria, and would be worthy of a bonus point

However the same set of playing conditions has an appendix with a table of example scores all with "overs to win" for one bonus point being 40 all the way down the column.

So there's an inherent contradiction in there. An anomoly hasn't really been clarified.

point taken. that really should be cleared up. i think the vics should have got the bonus point for a good effort. they're not going anywhere this season, so an extra point wouldn't hurt.

Standard One Day International
Match Playing Conditions

21.7.3 Bonus Points
The team that achieves a run rate of 1.25 times that of the
opposition shall be awarded one bonus point. A team’s run rate
will be calculated by reference to the runs scored in an innings
divided by the number of overs faced. Refer Appendix 3.

APPENDIX 3
Bonus Point System
• 1 bonus point for any team that achieves victory with a run rate 1.25 times
that of the opposition.
• A team’s run rate will be calculated by reference to the number of runs scored divided by the number of overs.balls faced.

I know that's for internationals.

Found this too:

... rule changes are the awarding of an extra bonus point to any team which doubles the run-rate of its opponent ...

Couldn't find further clarification at http://www.auscricket.com.au/publications.htm

In all, I'd say that the 1.25x is the criteria and not 40 overs.

Well done VICS- just too good for us on the day. Our bowling was awful and Elliott and Hodge made us pay for is.
