Man, footy's an emotional game, isn't it?

Last week we had Saints fans on our board consoling us over numerous umpiring decisions, but also leaving us with things like, "...but that's football...".

I know it's hard (for us it's still only last week), but that IS footy.
Can't console you, as it was a GF - I'd be inconsolable, too - but what is taken in victory must also be given in defeat.

Saints are a gun side - they will be there again.

And before you get in to me for that last statement, have a look at how many times it appeared on our board last week - often from well meaning Saints supporters!

It was an ordinary decision from the goal umpire tbh, but both sides got bad umpiring decisions at various stages for various reasons.

Perhaps the AFL could look at introducing a reviewal system theough TV replay. However, the only problem is that it can take for ever and really drag the game out. This happens regularly in the NFL and it can be a total pain in the ass. It doesn't always produce conclusive evidence either.

I say, let the umpires do their jobs as imperfect as they are, because video referrals will make viewing the game really tedious.

Provide the option during the regular breaks to cut down on time lost. During local footy the goal umpires conferred with the scoreboard to ensure the correct score was displayed, I would assume there is some manner of conferring going on beind the scenes in the AFL as well, so there's no problem at 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 time umpires gathering with a representative from both clubs and going through a set number of scoring queries (like 2 per quarter or something) and a reflected scoreline then with any differential made.

Eg: Both St Kilda and the Cats would have a representative and both would ask about "that poster @ the ##.## minute mark" or "that free against Milburn" tape would be reviewed in both instances from angles provided at the ground and the umpires would then make a decision on if the score stood as is. Couldn't hurt to trial such a system in the pre season to see it in practice if anything.

I think maybe a video referral system could be trialled for disputes over goal umpire decisions. But again, the problem is, the evidence is not always going to be conclusive. Obviously the one on Sat. was clearly a poster, but when the ball travels higher than the top of the goal posts for example, it can be very difficult to tell whether its a goal or a point. I'm not sure whether video replay can provide conclusive evidence in that regard. Also when the ball appears to shave the post it can sometimes be hard to tell even on replay.

Its a pain in the ass when you get decisions go against you like that, but I'm not sure whether we can counteract human error in the game with the use of video referral in a way that's workable. We'll see i guess...
